Introduction to the Newly Refined Curriculum for
Music in WV Schools
The IGO’s have become the “CSO’s” (Content
Standards and Objectives)
So, why refine the current IGOs?
Influences on the Arts Curriculum Refinement IDEA 97 U.S. Department of Education NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND
Instructional Goals are now Instructional Goals are now
called called CONTENT CONTENT STANDARDSSTANDARDS
Broad descriptions of what students should know and be able to do
Limited in their number Comprehensive Based on national standards Reflective of higher order
thinking skills
Objectives
Sometimes called “benchmarks” in documents from other states and federal programs
Incremental steps toward their respective content standards
Essential skills and knowledge Sequenced
The newest feature of the refined curriculum ...
Performance Descriptors
(Explicit definitions of how well students demonstrate knowledge and skills under each standard at the end of the course.)

Performance Descriptor Tips
Mastery levels are not correlated to letter or number grades.
At this time, there is no indication that PDs will be used on such things as student report cards or permanent records.
PD’s should give the teacher a vivid picture of the student ability at the end of the course.
A mastery level in one standard does not necessarily mean a mastery level in another.
Performance Descriptor Tips
PD’s can guide the teacher in designing student evaluation measures (such as quizzes, tests, and performance rubrics)
PD’s can help the teacher in deciding what types of evaluation to use in charting student progress
What exactly does this mean?
It means designing instruction that is varied and addresses different kinds of student skills.
It means deciding if one skill is more prevalent at a particular level.
It means designing student assessment that mirrors methods of learning
It means establishing rubrics for performance based activities
It means re-thinking such things as ……….
Re-Thinking Old Ways
Daily grades Assessing paired and
group work Establishing a
minimum level of acceptance for class participation
Making sure that the weighted value of the grade aligns with the importance/priority of the concept that is being measured
Deciding what to do about “extra credit” assignments
Convincing students and parents that a paper and pencil test is not always the best way to measure what the student knows or is able to do in an arts course.
What are the advantages of the Performance
Descriptors? They will help us prepare for any
future assessment in the fine arts They shift the focus to what the
student can and should be able to do.
They require the teacher to design instruction with the end in mind.
