Materials: 1. Science Journals 2. Pictures of Organisms – for group work 3. Bulletin Board – 5 Sections (1 for each kingdom) Introduction

o Can be found in oceans, forests, deserts, mountains, soil, air,

etc.

• Have students record as many living things as they can in their science

journal in a 2 minute period.

• Brainstorm as a class their findings.

• Ask: How do we define all living things? ORGANISMS

• Place students in groups of 2-4.

• Students will investigate images of organisms and organize them

into categories based on similarities and previous knowledge.

• Students are encouraged to use logic and reasoning when

categorizing, since the number of categories remains undefined.

• When students have established categories, they should record

their findings in their journal and list specific groups and

characteristics.

Summarizing

• Have students share their categories.

• List all various categories.

• Ask if any categories can be combined into broader groups.

Fungi Family Album Fungi are organisms that have one or many complex cells, cannot move, and decompose dead organisms or cells. Fungi share out world, and they’re common enough to find without much searching. Despite our best efforts to clean, they often inhabit our homes or yards. See how many different examples of fungi you can find. Write a few examples of what you might find on the lines below. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Together, we’re going to make a Fungi Family Album and we need everyone’s help! 1. Search for examples of fungi with your family members. Point out the different parts of the fungus you are examining and see if you can spot the spores. Explain to your family members the role of the spores. 2. For each example of a fungus, please complete the attached family album page (you do not have to find the scientific name – we will do that together in class). 3. Be sure to sketch a detailed picture of the fungus and include color. (If you have a digital camera and would like to include a picture, we would love to see it!) 4.
