Introduction to Summer Camp 2020 Virtual Field Trip Projects The best strategy for uncertain times is to restore a sense of certainty. We know the current situation has changed normal procedures and planning for Summer Camp, and much of it will continue through the season. The constraints of the COVID-19 situation have made gathering in public for field trips either unsafe or simply not possible. Because of this, the Kids ‘R’ Kids Support Center Team is creating a Virtual Field Trip and Project Learning program to enhance the Camp experience for 2020. The idea behind this program is that campers will create long-term projects based on virtual resources like field trips and tours. Different themed activities will be scheduled throughout each week over several weeks. This will give your academy the ability to create a sense of stability and anticipation from week to week. Just as was true for the traditional Summer Camp, the key to a quality program that includes virtual experiences is the importance of strong relationships for better outcomes (both child-to-child and teacher-to-child). We are prepared to ensure that the virtual camp activities follow the same guidelines of a quality program that is expected of a Kids ‘R’ Kids camp by doing the following: Intentionally creating activities that promote youth development Keeping activities aligned with strategies to build supportive relationships and skill-building Considering meaningful ways for each child to be safely involved in decision-making and leadership It is difficult to adjust to such a drastic change, but we can keep it in perspective by remembering how exciting it usually is for the children to anticipate going out on adventures, feel independent, and share experiences to make friends. We hope you will find this new program useful for enhancing your program!

Can you hear your echo? The acoustics of the room determine how sound is transmitted in it. For example, a flat smooth surface such as a brick wall or metal surface reflects sound and makes it bounce right back to us making it sound louder. Let’s explore some different sounds! Materials: rubber bands, various size containers, towel/shirt (items to stuff container), open space (gym to yell and hear echoes, experiment with different voices) Instructions: Wrap rubber bands around containers (use different amounts on each), stuff container with items and wrap rubber bands around Experiment with sounds: Was it loud? Hollow?

Junior Project/Activity Week 8: A Tasty Global Warming Earth Toast: A Tasty Global Warming is a fun approach to a very serious topic: Global Warming. Help your campers understand what is happening to the earth and what we can do about it while you chat over a piece of toast. It’s bread globally warmed, so to speak :) Materials:

1. White bread 2. Milk 3. 3” circle cookie or biscuit cutter 4. Blue and green food coloring 5. Brush 6. Toppings like butter, cinnamon sugar, etc.

Instructions:

1. Make your “paint” by adding a drop of food coloring to a few tablespoons of milk and mix well.

2. Take your bread piece and cut a circle in it with the cookie cutter. 3. Paint with the blue and green milk to make it look like the earth. Don’t go too heavy on

the milk or the toast won't crisp up. 4. Toast the bread in a toaster over or oven, making sure to watch it so that it doesn’t burn. 5. Top your toast with whatever you like. Butter and cinnamon sugar go especially well with

the browned over earth appearance. 6. Last, top with a healthy dose of conversation about saving the world.
