    What is Research?

    1. Scientific and systematic search forpertinent information on a specific topic.

    2. Systematized effort to gain new knowledge.

    3. Comprises defining and redefiningproblems, formulating hypothesis orsuggested solutions, collecting, organisingand evaluation of data, making deductions

and reaching conclusions, and at lastcarefully testing the conclusions todetermine whether they fit the formulatinghypothesis.

    METHODAn enquiry, reason consequences experimentally

    controlled, recorded.

    Scientific Method

    1.Relies on empirical evidence.

    2. Utilizes relevantconcepts

    3.Committedto objective considerations

    4.Ethical Neutrality

    5.Probabilistic predictions

Importance Of Knowing How Research Is

    Done, Stems From The Following

    Considerations

    Knowledge of methodology Provides -

Good Training to New research - Better

    research

    Disciplined Thinking Bent of mind

    Observe field objectively

Knowledge Ability to evaluate Use results

    with Confidence.

    Research Methodology

    1. The process of systematically solving the research

    problem.

    2. The science of studying how research is done

scientifically.3. The various steps of the research process and the

    logic behind it.

    4. The logic behind the research methods and why

one method is preferred over the other and theresearch results are capable of being evaluated by

    the researcher himself.

    For eg. An Architect

    Research methods

May be understood as all those methods or

techniques used for conduction of research

    - TOOLS OF RESEARCH

    a. Collection of the data.

    b. Statistical Techniques used for establishing

relationships between the data and the

unknowns.c. Methods used to evaluate the accuracy of the

    results.

    Objectives of Research

    1. To gain familiarity with a phenomenon or to

    achieve new insights.

    2. To portray accurately the characteristics of

    a particular individual.

    3. To determine the frequency with which

    something occurs.

    4. To test a hypothesis.

    Significance of Research

    1. Inculcates scientific and inductive thinking.

    2. Basis for all the government policies in theeconomic system.

    3. Studying social relationships in seeking answers tovarious social problems.

    4. Career Students.

    5. Source of livelihood Professionals.

    6. Development of new styles and creative work, new

ideas, insights Philosophers, thinkers and theliterates.

    7. Generation of new theories Analysts andintellectuals.

    ResearchApproaches

    Quantitative

    -Generation of data inquantitative form

    subjected to rigorous

    quantitative analysis

    Qualitative

    -subjectiveassessment of

    attitudes, opinion andbehaviour( non

    quantitative form)Egs. Focus groupinterviews, depth

    interviews.

    Quantitative Approach

    1. Inferential: Survey research where a sample

is studied and the characteristics or the

    conclusions inferred to the whole.

    2. Experimental:

    Control of the research environment.

    Variables manipulated.

To observe the effect on other variables.

    Criteria ofagood Research

    1. Purpose should be clearly defined by usingcommon concepts

    2. Describe Research Procedure

    3. Keeping the continuity further advancement

    4. Procedural design carefully planned to yieldresults that are stated in the objective

    5. Complete Frankness

    6. Validity and Reliability to be checked carefully

    7. Conclusions justified by the data

    8. Greater Confidence
