Debriefing Project Phase 1

The Project – Side Effects

• Trains your soft skills– team work– deal with bugs, poor documentation, …– produce with limited time resources– project management and reporting

• Results useful for you personally– Demo:

• Project should be fun

Page 3: Introduction to Information Systems

3

Debriefing

• First: work done is impressive!

Page 4: Introduction to Information Systems

4

Bugs and Company

• As expected real life is full of surprises– problem with 5MB limit– problem with Ebay– difficulties with SED– bugs in Pointbase– syntactic variations in Pointbase– …

Page 5: Introduction to Information Systems

5

An Imperfect World

• The data is not always of the quality you expect it to be (sometimes on purpose?)– more in this follows for Phase 2

• Conceptual Schemas – Redesigns (not a "problem with 'us'" ;-) )– "Agreement" on schema

• Some data didn't fit (trees)

• Regular expressions are sensitive to changes

Page 6: Introduction to Information Systems

6

Time Management

• First phase was (not unexpectedly) very time consuming

• Phase 2 and 3 should be better• Tradeoff between doing something "real" and

saving time• Some groups reported on insufficient

planning• Specialists in group for different tasks

Page 7: Introduction to Information Systems

7

The practical side

• Some adaptations for phase 2– you will find more assistants on Friday– Password protection if desired– Experience report in PDF format– deliverable as ZIP file by email

• Roman will have more information

• Please use the News Group for Questions!

Suggestions for Phase 2

9

Database Integration

• Combining data from different databases– collection of data (wrapping)– combination of data and generation of new views on

the data (mediation)

• Problem: heterogeneity– access, representation, content

• Example revisited (Demo)– http://immo.search.ch/ – http://www.swissimmo.ch

Page 10: Introduction to Information Systems

10

Suggestions for Phase 2

• When integrating data– no "perfect" database expected: output cannot be

better as input!– partial matches from DBs are ok– data quality has no influence on grading!

Page 11: Introduction to Information Systems

11

Suggestions for Phase 2

• Important– integration at schema level– observe and report the difficulties– planned: debriefing on database integration

problems

So

• Good luck

• and watch the time
