BIRDS EYE VIEW OFPOP-UP EXHIBITIONThis exhibition will not only exhibit art works but will also give visitors an experience like no other. The pop-up exhibition has 4 spaces, each represented by an Artist and their series of works chosen for the exhibit. Each space will give audiences new things to hear, see, engage with and experience all at the same time. Bringing this experience to the audience creates a connection between the photographer and the viewer as if they were there with the artist when the work was being created, as well as experiencing what it would have been like to be surrounded by conflict.

Scenes From a Liberated BaghdadNorfolk’s set of images where taken in the aftermath of the Iraq war –

April 2003.

He arrived there 10 days after the U.S. Marines helped the citizens of Baghdad topple over the oppressive Saddam Hussein statue.

Simon Norfolk

Throughout this Exhibition we are giving the visitors a 4D experience so each room will have it’s own atmosphere.

Creating the Atmosphere

How will this be tackled? We had the idea of using props, sound and temperature in order to convey a theme to our viewers.

Having an exhibition including various artists but same general theme we thought it would be important to make a clear differentiation between their works.

Street Corner where five boys were killed. US soldiers came to destroy an Iraqi tank that had been left behind. They threw in an incendiary grenade and left. People came to watch the burning tank and when its ammunition exploded.

Create the Atmosphere - Flooring In this instalation the flooring will be much like what you see in this image

with a roughly paved pathway guiding viewers through the room.

A looter, identified as Omar with help from his father are looting the arm of Saddam’s statue to sell the brass

We chose this flooring because the style conveys a strong connotation of a wreckage/ruin. Also as visitors are walking, though having a rough path to guide them, will have to be watching where they step. This creates that mist of empathy that Norfolk has portrayed in his images.

Create the Atmosphere - Sound The sounds will resemble the theme of war so the sound of rifles

faintly echoing in the distance, explosions and rubble toppling.

Although these images are the aftermath these are still very fresh wounds from the Iraqi war. The use of guns and explosions paired with buidlings being shattered is a concept that would work well.

This will really bring the concept of these images to the viewers even more so.

Rashid Street in Central Baghdad. The building on the right was used as a higher ground to overlook the bridge. In the process it was heavily damaged.

Create the Atmosphere – Climate We want to go even further than looks and soundtracks. Our idea

is to create a sort of weather conditions biome in each room prior to the location it’s based on.

Using heating and humidifiers in this room we’d emulate the climate of Baghdad on a small scale to have the viewers further understand what it was like to live in this ‘liberated’ scarred land – it’s not easy!

Date grove along Haifa Street, northern Baghdad. Was used as an artillery position. Iraqi soldiers fled leaving clothing and boots.
