Worship & Justice

Leviticus has roughly two parts:

• Chapters 1-16 is primarily concerned with sacrifices, ritual purity, and the duties of priests.

• Chapters 17-27 (the Holiness Code) discusses rituals and worship, and also emphasizes holy living in all aspects of daily life.

• The structure of the whole book would seem to suggest that holy living arises out of right worship and that worship of the Lord results in justice toward one's neighbor.

Sacrifice and meaning • The sacrificial system

understands life is extremely valuable.

• It also takes sin very seriously.

• To cleanse sin life is required.

• Life is so highly valued that eating blood is strictly forbidden, "for the life of every creature [is] its blood" (17:14).

• NT book of Hebrews understands this priestly theology of sacrifice and portrays Jesus as both high priest and final sacrifice.

• The severing of the temple veil at Jesus’ death (Matt 27:51) demonstrated that his sacrifice had now opened the way into God’s very presence (Heb 4:14; 8:5; 9:11, 24).

• Now, in Christ, believers enter into the true heavenly Holy of Holies of which the earthly one had been only a copy (Exod 25:40; Heb 8:5).
