An IT Scenario is a set of IT processes, grouped to attain a defined business goal

Targeting the business of IT, IT Scenarios and their variants help the

technical community to more quickly and easily

develop, compose, and run applications

build, enhance, and operate an IT infrastructure

implement a defined IT concept, such as evolving a company’s system

landscape into a services-based architecture

Introduced with SAP NetWeaver 2004s

Also delivered as content in Solution Manager

Note: IT Scenarios replace the previous “component” view for implementing SAP

NetWeaver

All SAP NetWeaver product information will be rolled out based on IT Scenarios

Enter the IT Scenario Concept – Aligned with IT Practices

SAP NetWeaver Usage Type Definition

A more technical view …The Usage Type of a SAP NetWeaver System describes the

installed and configured (part of a) SAP NetWeaver system

Detailed:

A Usage Type can share a system with other Usage Types

A Usage Type can be run separately in different systems (so that

interfaces between Usage Types must work locally as well as remotely)

Upgrade of all Usage Types belonging to one system or one IT Scenario

is recommended — synchronize (Patches/Packages) the Usage Types onthe same Support Package Stack level

 – Upgrade from previous SAP NetWeaver releases may require configuration of

smaller units, e.g., ADS which is part of “BI JAVA” Usage Type

A Usage Type (per definition) is not an installable unit*

* Remember: A Usage Type provides both installation of a collection of software

components and basic configuration support for SAP NetWeaver systems

A “Usage Type” …

… determines the role in which an SAP

NetWeaver system plays in a landscape

… determines the intended purposeof a system

… is realized by installing and

configuring a collection of software

components. Thus, it defines the

capabilities offered by the system.

What is the Relationship Between IT Scenarios Usage

What is the Relationship Between IT Scenarios, UsageTypes, and Software Components?

Both the relationship between IT scenarios and software components, as well as ITScenarios and Usage Types, is many-to-many. IT scenarios may span several

Usage Types which each may reside on different systems.

By relating the software components to Usage Types, we ensure that the correct

technologies are chosen when implementing IT scenarios

Additional installable programs or tools

Either reside on local front-end PCs accessed by users or on back-end

systems where they act as client program within an SAP NetWeaver system landscape

Examples:

 – SAP GUI used as client application for accessing ABAP applications in

SAP systems

 – SAP NetWeaver  ® Developer Studio — SAP’s own environment for developing

Java-based, multi-layered business applications
