T. John College of Nursing conducted a one day State Level

Workshop on ‘Curriculum Development’ on March 27, 2012.

The Chief Guest for the day was Mr. Muninarayanappa (Registrar,

Karnataka Nursing Council). Chairman, Campus Director, Principal

and Vice-Principal of TJCN were also present. Resource persons for

the workshop, Prof. Periyadurachi (M.Sc Nursing), Prof. Priyalatha

(M.Sc Nursing) and Dr. Sai Laxmi Gandhi (M.Sc Nursing and PhD)

delivered lectures on various aspects of curriculum development like

curriculum construction, challenges in curricu-lum construction and

Feb 1, 2012 witnessed the lamp lighting ceremony of the 9th batch of B.Sc Nursing students along with the inauguration of Student

Nurses Association. Lamp lighting Ceremony, an auspicious occasion in every nurse’s life is held in reverence of Florence Nightingale or Lady with the Lamp as she is more popularly known. This ceremony initiates the students into the noble profession of nursing, adorned in their uniforms for the fi rst time, these students hereafter will study and practice in actual medical surroundings. Mrs. Rohini Paul (Nursing Superintendent, Narayana Hrudayalaya Hospitals) was the Chief Guest and Dr. Thomas P. John, Chairman T. John Group of Institutions presided over the function. T. John College of Pharmacy conducted a one day seminar on ‘New Trends in Pharmacy’ on March 30, 2012. The event was inaugurated by Padma Vibhushan

International Food Fest was organized by T. John College of Pharmacy on March 28, 2012. Students from 14 nations participated and prepared special dishes of their countries. Staff and students of T. John Group of Institutions

TRAINING PROGRAMMES ATTENDED BY FACULTY

A fi ve day VTU-VGST sponsored faculty development programme was organized from February 21-23, 2012 by the Dept. of Computer Science and Engineering at T. John Institute of Technology, Bangalore. The faculty development programme on Data Mining and Data Warehousing was targeted towards faculty members of engineering colleges affi liated to VTU. This programme was organized as part of a joint initiative by VTU and VGST, the Karnataka Government’s Vision Group on Science and Technology to give teachers an opportunity to explore research avenues and improve their knowledge. The programme delved on the research challenges in science and engineering from a data mining perspective. The participants were taken on industrial visits to HCL and Honeywell, Bangalore, where industry experts provided training on various data mining and data warehousing tools.

A national level workshop on ethical hacking was held in T. John Institute of Technology from March 9-10, 2012 in association with InfySec. Mr. Senthil Kumar of Infy Sec was the instructor for the event. A well renowned hacker who has undertaken projects for many Fortune 500 companies and government agencies spent two days with the students instructing them on the fi ner points of ethical hacking. The Workshop provided an overview on fundamental principles of Ethical Hacking, Network Security and Web Application Security. The workshop aimed at providing the participants with an insight into the vulnerabilities, attacks and threats that manifest in Web Applications. It also trained the participants to implement and fi nd the solutions for the same. The workshop helped the students to gain a new perspective about hacking, which till then held a negative connation for them. It gave them an insight into how hacking could be useful to society and could also be taken up as a career choice.

Students of IV and VI Semester B.E. Information Science and B.E. Computer Science were taken to the Infosys campus at Mysore for an industrial visit. The visit was organized as part of the SPARK initiative by Infosys. Infosys empowers the youth by providing them with hands-on experience in Information Technology through SPARK. The on-campus program initiates high school and engineering students from across India. SPARK offers a learning environment that helps students realize their potential and assess their industry preparedness. The program partners with academic institutions to enhance the pool of talent as well as meet the demands of the IT industry. The trip provided students with valuable insights into the requirements and challenges of the IT industry and gave them a better perspective on what to expect.

Students of VI and VIII Semester attended a presentation by TrainEdge. The company focuses on application development for Windows Phones. The students were given a brief overview of the new Windows operating system for mobile phones. They were also familiarized with the opportunities available to them in Windows Phone domain. The students enjoyed the presentation and are currently participating in various programmes initiated by them.

TJIT held a two days conference “RATE 2012” on Recent Advances in Technology and Engineering on 21st and 22nd of March 2012. The conference was organized by the Dept. of Computer Science & Engg and Dept. of Information Science and Engg along with the Dept. of Computer Applications. It was aimed at bringing together researchers and experts in various emerging fi elds of science and

technology and also for knowledge enhancement. The conference aimed at covering a broad spectrum of topics, such as wireless systems, mobile computing, cloud and grid computing and artifi cial intelligence. Mr. Santosh Mallya, General Manager, HCL Technologies, Bangalore, graced the inaugural function as the Chief Guest and Dr. Thomas P. John, Chairman, T.John Group of Institutions presided the occasion. Almost 100 research papers were presented by the participants. The paper presentations were organized as six sessions held simultaneously over a period of two days. The sessions were classifi ed based on different tracks like networking, data mining, embedded systems etc. The valedictory function was held at 3:00 pm on 22nd March 2012. Dr. S. INSTINCTS – 12: TECHNICAL SYMPOSIUM

INSTINCTS-12, a technical symposium for students was conducted by the departments of Electronics & Communication and Telecomunication Engg., T. John Institute of Technology in the campus on March 31, 2012. The symposium was inaugurated by Chief Guest Mr. Kris Kammaripalle, Director of Technical Support, VMWare Software India Pvt. Ltd. Mr. Kris gave an informative talk on Career Planning and gave the students an insight into how to choose an employer and how to conduct oneself in an organisation. The inauguration ceremony also saw the Guest of Honour, Dr. Mahadevan, Professor

and Head of the Dept. of Computer Science Engineering, AMC College of Engineering advising the students on how to take up research projects which will help in their overall academic development. The technical symposium saw undergraduate and postgraduate students from different engineering colleges in the city participating in events like Paper Presentation, Technical Quiz, Web Designing, Coding and Debugging, Spot Photography, Rubik’s Cube and many more.

Dr. Mahabaleshwar Bhat, Head of Dept. of Electronics and Communication Engg, was the Chief Guest at the Faculty Development Workshop on Medical Imaging held at GSSS Institute of Technology, Mysore on March 26, 2012. He delivered the keynote address on the topic of Medical Imaging - Current and Future Challenges.

‘OPERATION RESEARCH’Dr. S. K Singh, an eminent scientist from DRDO gave a talk on ‘Operation Research – Some Defense and National Security Applications’ on March 31, 2012. MCA Students of II and IV Sem attended the seminar.

The Second International Conference on Electronic Warfare – EWCI 2012 was held at

Department of MCA arranged a guest lecture on ‘Web programming’ by Shri G C Sandeepa Pateel, Asst. Professor in RV College of Engineering on Feb 11, 2012. All the IV Semester MCA students and 12 students from TJC attended the programme. Shri Sandeepa Pateel discussed about the software installations and how to work with various web applications. The feedback from students indicated that the application developed during the lecture helped them to understand the subject better.

DECISION SUPPORT SYSTEMAs part of fortnight seminar Dr. A. M Nageswara Yogi, HOD, MCA, TJIT conducted a seminar on ‘Decision Support System’ for the faculties of T. John Group of Institutions on March 7, 2012.

NENAPUStudents of IV MCA participated in NENAPU program organized by Dayananda Sagar Institute of Technology. Praveen Sharma, Sunil G, Roshan Phlip V got First Prize in coding and IT managing.

CHARIOT TO FUTUREStudents from all departments of T. John College participated in the event ‘Chariot to Future’ which was held to promote entrepreneurship among the youth as a part of NEN’s All India E-Week celebration on Feb 14, 2012.

T. John College began its Entrepreneurship Week Celebration with an inaugural lecture by Mr. Rajiv Jayaraman on Feb 11, 2012. The college participated in an annual event called E-Week initiated by NEN (Wadhwani Foundation).

Mr. Rajiv Jayaraman is the CEO of a software company ‘KNOLSKAPE’ based in Singapore/Bangalore. His company develops management training, assessment and research products. He shared his knowledge with management students on how to become successful entrepreneurs. Vice Principal Dr. Nilanjana Basu gave a motivational

talk on entrepreneurship. The event was coordinated by Asst. Prof. Aradhana Yadav and Lecturer Shantana Bose of the dept. of Management.

APHRODITE CELEBRATES WOMEN’S DAY

International Women’s Day was celebrated on March 12, 2012 by ‘Aphrodite’ (Women’s Cell) in T. John College. The event was coordinated by Ms. Shikha Tiwari, coordinator for women’s cell.

Aphrodite had organized a seminar which was presided over by Chief Guest Ms. Swarnalatha Iyer, Campus Director Mr. P. Sambasivan and Vice Principal Ms. Nilanjana Basu. This seminar was attended by students from various departments of TJC.

Ms. Swarnalatha Iyer is currently working as a Senior Project Associate at ‘Centre for Leadership and Management in Public Services (C-LAMPS)’, where she trains educational functionaries from the Govt. of Karnataka with a view to develop leaders at the grass root level. She is also a member of the Board of Studies at Mount Carmel College and Jyothi Nivas College, Bangalore. Ms. Swarnalatha is also a certifi ed counsellor with special training in marital counseling and child guidance.

Ms. Swarnalatha spoke on women related issues and the causes behind it. According to her if women stand up for themselves, be brave and have confi dence, it can defi nitely make a change.

NAAC CONFERENCE: INNOVATIVE PRACTICES IN MANAGEMENT EDUCATIONNAAC sponsored two day National Conference on ‘Innovative Practices in Management Education’ was held from Mar 28-29, 2012 in T. John College. The aim of the conference was to create awareness in academia regarding the effectiveness of innovative methods in teaching which would improve the quality of education. The conference was attended by the Chairman of T. John Group of Institutions - Dr. Thomas P. John, Campus Director Wg Cdr (Ret’d) - P. Sambasivan and the Vice Principal of T. John College Dr. Nilanjana Basu. The conveners for the conference were Ms. Usha, Ms. Hemlatha Dodamani and Ms. Chandrakala V. The Chief Guest for the occasion was Dr. A. P. Padhi (Executive Committee Member of NAAC, Bhubaneshwar) and the guest speakers were Group Captain Vijayakumar (VSM, Executive Director, Madras Management Association), Dr. Ravichandra Reddy (Ex Member NAAC), Mr. Anil Sivadas (CEO of Inventure Technology) and Dr. Ritika Sinha (BoE of

Canara Bank School of Management). There were 40 delegates from adjoining states who participated in the conference. There were 24 paper presentations which were conducted in parallel sessions during the conference.

GRADUATION DAY IN T. JOHN COLLEGE

Graduation Day was celebrated with great pomp and show on Mar 10, 2012 in T. John College. The occasion was graced by Chief Guest Dr. C.N. Manjunath, Director of Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences & Research, the Chairman of T. John Group of Institutions Dr. Thomas P. John, the Campus Director of T. John Group of Institutions Wg Cdr (Ret’d) P. Sambasivan and the Vice Principal of T. John College Dr. Nilanjana Basu along with Heads of Departments and other faculty members. The programme began with the lighting of the lamp by the Chief Guest, followed by the college anthem and an invocation song. The Chief Guest was introduced to the audience and he delivered an inspiring speech. This was followed by the speech of the Chairman and the Campus Director.

Students with outstanding academic performance were rewarded. Mr. Ebenezer Breman Veerasingam from VI Sem B.A. (JEP) was awarded the Best Student of the year in T. John College. Prizes for the National Level Football Championship were given to the students by the Chief Guest and the Chairman. All the fi nal year students were called up on the dais by their respective HODs and given their college leaving certifi cate.

PARENTS TEACHERS MEET Parents Teacher Meeting was organized in T. John College on Jan 28, 2012 by Ms. Shikha Tiwari, Dept. of Languages.

The meeting was attended by Dr. George Easaw (Principal, TJC), Dr. Nilanjana Basu (Vice Principal, TJC), Ms. Shikha Tiwari (PTA Coordinator), Prof. S. Idzenga (Guest-Faculty from Netherlands), faculty members, parents and students of T. John College.

Parent-Teacher meetings are a platform to make a lasting connection with the parent to increase the possibility of academic success for their ward. All points discussed in the meeting were noted by Dr. Nilanjana Basu who will further analyze the scope of improvement on each issue.

Republic Day was celebrated with a difference by NSS Unit at T. John College on Jan 26, 2012. NSS volunteers took children from Ebnezer Child Care Missionary, an orphanage, located at Gottigere in Bannerghatta Road, Bangalore, for a joy ride in Metro. The day started with the fl ag hoisting ceremony. NSS Program Offi cer Mr. N. Ravindranath addressed the gathering and stressed on the importance of NSS participation in Republic day celebration at Delhi.

Department of Hotel Management organized a guest lecture on Front Offi ce Operations on Jan 10, 2012. It was a resourceful talk delivered by Mr. Roy, the Front Offi ce Manager of Ibis Hotel, who focused on the latest trends of front offi ce o p e r a t i o n s , laying emphasis on career opportunities in front offi ce not only in hotels but also in other sectors.

AMBROSIA - 2012 WORKSHOPThe best of Food Bonanza was conducted by the Department of Hotel Management on Mar 8, 2012. AMBROSIA – 2012 saw the General Manager, Executive Chef and the HR Manager from Adarsh Hamilton Hotel graced the occasion. The gamut of dishes from different parts of the world had the guest’s taste buds tingling. The whole function was organized by the students themselves right from cooking to decorating and service of all the items. The fest was conducted under ‘Apret Club’ banner.

A fl ower arrangement workshop was conducted for BHM students on Feb 10, 2012 by a professional fl orist, Mr. Kaushik who showed different types of fl ower arrangements made in various styles. This event was organized by Mrs. Bandana Singh, faculty with the department of Hotel Management.

The faculty team consisting of Mr. Sreedhar Krishnan, Mr. Satish khalko, Mr. Sanoj M. Nair and Mr. Thirumorthy was the main guiding force for the carnival. ASSISTMIDelegates of ASSITMI gave a presentation on a new concept based on social networking on Feb 24, 2012 at the department of Hotel Management.

With advancements in technology the numbers of hackers especially with social networking sites have increased tremendously which has an adverse impact on the people who visit these sites often leaving behind crucial personal information

The seminar included talks by eminent speakers about various topics of life sciences - the current research trends and applications in the fi eld of nano biotechnology, solid waste management, molecular medicine and stem cell culture. Students and faculty members from different colleges and

Dr. A.R Phani from Nano-Ram Technologies delivered a talk on Nano structured materials in Tissue Engineering which was followed by a spot quiz by Biotecnika Group. The session continued with a short informative lecture by Dr. Ronald Ross, Annamalai University on Solid Waste

Management. Before the lunch break one more round of spot quiz by Biotecnika was conducted. The afternoon session included talks on recent trends and role of Biotechnology in Molecular Medicine by Dr. Elango from Narayana Hrudayalaya and Stem Cell Culture by Dr. Manoj Mojamdar. BBM students of TJC organized ‘ILIUmInAtI 2012 –Path to Enlightenment’, a management fest on February 17, 2012. Dr. Raju Chandra Shekar was the chief guest for the event. He is a member of UGC, NAAC team and a visiting professor for various management institutions across the country.

Mr. Ashish Khushu, CEO and MD of Teravault, conducted a seminar on Mar 16, 2012 on ‘Preparing for the Challenges of Corporate world’. TIMS conducted BU Inter Collegiate Yoga Competitions from Jan 12-13, 2012 at Campus Auditorium. 25 students from various colleges affi liated to Bangalore University participated in the competition. VTU Annual Sports Meeting and Interaction with Vice-Chancellor was held from Jan 18-19, 2012. The meeting saw the fi nalization of sports calendar for the academic year 2012-13. Mr. Chinni Sreedhara, Physical Education Director attended the meeting. In the meeting it was decided that TJIT will be hosting VTU Inter-Collegiate South Zone Table Tennis (Men & Women) competitions for the academic year 2012-13.

TJIT hosted VTU Inter Collegiate Bangalore South Zone Table Tennis Tournament from Feb 28-29, 2012. 23 teams in men and 12 teams in women participated in this tournament to vie for the top honors.

Mr. Chinni Sreedhara was awarded the Best Convener for the Year 2012-13 by RGUHS. Dr. Sriprakash K. S, Honorable Vice-Chancellor of RGUHS rewarded Mr. Chinni during the Annual Physical Education Directors meet at RGUHS Dhanvatri Hall on March 9, 2012.

A cricket tournament ‘T. John Sixes 2012’ was organized by the Sri Lankan students at T. John Group of Institutions on Feb 19, 2012. The tournament had 16 teams from different colleges in Bangalore which included Sri Lankan students as their team members.

Congratulations to TJC Football Team for winning The Champions Trophy at the State Level Inter- Collegiate Sports Fest 2012, conducted by Bangalore City District Olympic Association. held at Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Stadium, Bangalore from Feb 8-9, 2012.

Mr. Vimso Varghese and Mr. Jitin Joy of I year PBSc Nursing represented RGUHS at the All India Inter University Ball Badminton Competition held at Mangalore University from Jan 23 - Feb 1, 2012.
