Congratulations to the Medina High School Debate Team. This year?s team has qualified eight students to the state championship. This will be the fifteenth consecutive trip to the state championship. The team has competed every weekend since October, except for Christmas Eve and New Year?s Eve. Topics change every week for Congressional Debate, every month for Public Forum, and every two months in Lincoln Douglas Debate. Most of the tournaments are less than an hour away, with some notable exceptions. This year, the team made its third trip to Georgetown University in September with Medina High School students finishing in seven of the top ten spots in Congressional Debate, including champion. They also won the championship in the novice division of Public Forum Debate. Twenty-six of the 48 member team traveled to Princeton University in December, competing against teams

from six countries around the world including China and South Korea finishing in the top five in Lincoln Douglas Debate for the fourth year in a row. Most recently, the team competed at the Eastern Ohio NSDA Championships. Although they have not yet received a national qualifier, the team did receive the first alternate to nationals in Lincoln-Douglas Debate. The Eastern Ohio district is the 8th largest district in the nation with one of our own finishing in fourth place. March will be a very busy month for the debate team with the state championship March 3-4, state novice championship March 11, novice national championships in Atlanta March 17-19, and the national qualifying tournament in Congressional Debate March 25. In April, Medina High School will attend another national qualifying tournament involving a new event called ?Big Questions Debate.? At that tournament, team members will be debating whether or not science leaves room for free will. The debate team has competed in six national championships since the team?s founding 23 years ago.

February was Black History Month. As part of a community celebration on February 23, the Second Baptist Church located at 451 Bronson Street, was host to the 15th annual Black History Month celebration sponsored by the church and the Medina County Branch of the American Association of University Women.

Medina residents of all ages and backgrounds filled the church's sanctuary to capacity. They heard stories about success, determination, overcoming struggles and service to others. Students from the ACE after school mentoring program at Claggett Middle School gave their insights on the importance of Black History Month. Garfield Elementary and Claggett Middle School choirs performed that evening. Garfield Elementary students also had their artwork on display for the community to enjoy.

?? Come with me, and you?ll be in a world of pure imagination? What you?ll see will defy explanation? ?

Medina High School After Prom is an event which provides a safe, substance-free environment for all Juniors and Seniors (and their approved guests) to continue their Prom celebration. Students do not have to attend Prom to enjoy After Prom.  It is held in the High School which is transformed into an unrecognizable venue.  Over 600 students have attended After Prom enjoying entertainment, activities, food, and DOZENS UPON DOZENS of prize baskets are awarded at the end of the night.

We now have our own websit e w it h inform at ion and l inks t o m ake donat ions and volunt eer . Our sit e is m hsaf t erprom .webs.com . We encourage you t o check it out .

It takes many resources, both financial and physical, along with many volunteers to make After Prom a success. Volunteers are needed to plan, decorate, set up, chaperone, and tear down. Past years, as many as 130 volunteers have been a part of the event.  It is definitely a huge project and cannot be done without you.

The committee has been meeting since September working and planning to make this a successful event. We still have 3 more planning meetings in the Mecca at the HS (next to the Main office and Hub) at 7:00 p.m. The dates are Thursdays 3/16, 4/6, and 4/27.  Please feel free to contact a committee member if you have any questions.
