7 TIPS FOR

READY FORHIGH SCHOOL!

GETTING YOUR CHILD

1. INTRODUCE SCHOOL RULES TO THE HOMEOne of the biggest changes your child is going to have to deal with when starting school for the first time is the requirement to obey school rules. .For this reason, it can be a good idea to begin the implementation of such rules prior to your child’s starting school

2. LET GOParents want to cling hold of their children for as long as possible, and letting their children out into the big wide world of school poses a daunting prospect. The problem is that such smothering does nothing to help the child. Not allowing their child to do this would have dire consequences for how they are able to socialize with other children, as the child becomes too used to the comfort of home life.

3. MAKE SCHOOL SEEM FUN It’s up to you to solidify the grounds of a potential life-long friendship by arranging playdates with the parents of other children in their class. This is a crucial step in ensuring your child develops strong friendships within the class..

4. HELP THEM ORGANIZE A SYSTEM One of the main differences between primary and high school is that the responsibility for getting things done shifts from the parent to the child. It is important that

you prepare your child for this shift, organization will be key not just in their time at school, but also beyond that in future.

5. ENSURE THEY ARE ON TOP OF THEIR HOMEWORK The sudden influx of homework on a larger scale is one of the key differences between primary and high school. Ask them what homework they have to do and check they’ve done it.

6. KEEP UP WITH SCHOOL AFFAIRS In high school, the parents can often feel cut out of the loop. Messages from the school about events and affairs are trusted to the children themselves, and often the message can get lost between child and parent. It’s worth keeping up with what’s going on at the school in case there is some opportunity you feel your child should take advantage of.

7. TALK TO YOUR CHILDWith starting high school, worries and fears can frequently be buried by children, and significant issues can be left to fester. Often a parent is the only person the child might feel comfortable talking to about such issues, so it’s important to regularly talk to them about their school day, to ensure problems are not left alone.

Sandals Whitehouse recently hosted its Back-to-School Family Fun Day on the resort’s famed Croc’s Lawn. The yearly event provided non-stop kid-friendly entertainment for some two hundred and fifty team members and their children who were treated to thrilling rides on Ferris Wheels, access to water slides, pool, face painting, competitive races, dance-offs and yummy meals.

Each child also received back to school packages and many capitalized on the opportunities to win extra supplies by participating in various competitions. According to General Manager Courtney Miller, the Fun Day was a worthwhile initiative that was very much appreciated by the team “children all want to have fun during the summer holidays and parents want to spend

less on their back to school shopping. The fun day was an answer to both needs; while the children had a blast, the parents were happy that each package helped in some way to offset their expenses.”

“I am happy that Sandals Whitehouse does this every year, and I can look forward to a day in August where my two children will get a full day of fun and I would spend less on supplies during my back to school shopping,” said one team member.

After helping to monitor their children for a whole day of fun, the adults blew off steam at the Sandals Whitehouse Sports and Social Club’s Summer Rave Colours Party later in the night.

Earl Cummings from the Maintenance Department at Sandals Royal Caribbean in Montego Bay is the Ultimate Team Member for the Sandals/ATL Group for the year 2013.

Cummings received the honour at the company’s sixth annual Ultimate Team Member Award Ceremony held at Sandals Grande Riviera Beach and Villa Golf Resort on Thursday, August 21, 2014.

A senior air-conditioner technician, Cummings who has been working with the company for 18 years was chosen from a field of 26 nominees from Sandals, Beaches and Grand Pineapple Resorts, ATL Automotive Limited, Appliance Traders Limited, The Jamaica Observer Limited, Unique Vacations Limited and the ATL Group Pension Fund Trustees Nominee Limited.

Beaming with pride and a quiet humility, Cummings, always a team player said he wished the award could be shared among all his fellow nominees. He said, “I’m overwhelmed right now. I wish everyone could have gotten a piece of it. We are all one family and we are all deserving of it. I hope everyone can get an opportunity to have such an experience because it is awesome!”

In an elegant award ceremony and dinner, Cummings and the other nominees were treated to a night of fine food and entertainment, featuring stirring performances from the National Youth Orchestra, acclaimed classical

singer Rory Baugh and team members from Beaches Ocho Rios, Sandals Whitehouse and Sandals Grande Riviera’s Entertainment Departments.

CEO of Sandals Resorts International Adam Stewart praised the nominees for their incalculable value to the company, reminding them that they each play a critical role in the success of the Group. He said, “The machine that is our company cannot work without everyone being in full harmony. Each department and division must perform.”

He said the attitudes, talents and skills of the nominees were to be admired and were in fact representative of the potential within the entire Group. “The people that we are celebrating here tonight are our stars and they are also tickets to our future. If at least 20 per cent of what they each have can rub off on someone else, we’re set for the future. They are the best of the best”, he said.

To identify the ultimate winner, nominees were first identified as Prestige Team Members for their individual companies or resorts. They were then assessed by various criteria, including team spirit, training hours, attendance record, ambassadorial qualities, and community and environmental stewardship. After weeks of examining the nominees’ profiles, the selection panel was confident to announce Cummings as the Ultimate Team Member – the best of the company’s 12,000-strong team.
