Interstellar (2014)

Due to years of global crop failure and the onset of a second Dust Bowl, the existence of the human race on Earth is coming to an ultimate end. After discovering coordinates to a secret NASA installation, former NASA astronaut Joseph Cooper (Matthew McConaughey), is asked to pilot a space mission to save humanity.

NASA physicist Dr. John Brand (Michael Caine) tells Cooper of a wormhole placed by an unknown alien intelligence, which leads to another galaxy. He plans to transport the Earths population through the wormhole and onto a hospitable planet in the new galaxy. The purpose of the mission, named Endurance, is to survey several planets and determine the most suitable environment for human existence.

Upon Coopers agreement to pilot the spacecraft, Dr. John Brand pulls together a team of three other astronauts, including Amelia Brand, Dr. Brands daughter (Anne Hathaway). They collectively launch Endurance, and head for the wormhole, not knowing when or if they will return to human civilization.

Although characters of Interstellar mention a good amount of theoretical physics, which seems to throw off a few movie watchers, they explain mathematical equations and scientific theory to a satisfying degree of clarity. The discussions of gravitational singularities, black holes, and extra-dimensional space are translated to be easily comprehensible if audiences are alert and pay close attention. It should be known that it is fairly difficult to lose focus when the visual aspects of this movie are so mesmerizing and surreal.

Christopher Nolan, the director and screenwriter of Interstellar, successfully delivers a heartfelt and thought-provoking sci-fi epic. His vision of space travel and galaxies beyond our own is daunting and dazzling, and his use of cutting-edge special effects only enhances the level of awe it evokes.
