    INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME (CLINICAL COURSE III)

    RULES AS REVISED ON 13 DECEMBER 2011

    The internship programme attempts to expose the students to see how law works in

    practice. Internships may be undertaken in lawyers chambers, courts, administrativeoffices, quasi-udicial establishments, prosecution departments, police and correctionalinstitutions, commercial corporate establishments, !overnment "aw #ffices, legal aid

    centres, legislative secretariat, non-governmental organi$ations etc .

    It aims to teach professional skills, essential aspects of professional ethics and socialresponsibility issues and management of challenging situations in practical and

    professional life.

    The following guidelines apply to the internship programme%

    &. The programme is for '( working days unless the )niversity notifies

    otherwise. It is to be undertaken during the vacation between *anuary to

    +arch and is compulsory for .., "".. /ons.0 students from third year

    onwards and for students of "".+. in their first year.

    '. 1plit internships are allowed with permission from the concerned 2lass

    Internship 2oordinator. This will be permitted only in exceptional cases likemedical reasons, participation in moots or exchange programmes etc. In case

    of a split internship, two diaries must be submitted although the total number

    of case notes remains two. #nly official diaries must be used.

    In case a student participates in an exchange programme or a moot etc., and is

    unable to undertake the internship in *anuary-+arch, it may be undertaken in

    the *une break preceding or following that academic year. The same rule

    would apply to students undertaking exchange programmes or moots in any

    other year.

    3. The nature of internship for students of different years of .. "".. /ons.0course are is follows:

    a0 III year% Trial 2ourt a 2ourt of 4irst instance0 Internship

    (Explanation: this includes original practice involving jurisdiction of High

    Courts)This must include at least five 2ourt visits which involve observation

    of court proceedings.

    b0 I5 year% ppellate 2ourt or 6quivalent Internships. This must include

    at least five 2ourt visits which involve observation of court proceedings

    c0 5 year % To be focused on the area in which the student wishes to

    speciali$e7 practice. /owever, the internship should have a primarylegal component. In case of doubt, please clarify in writing with your

    2lass Internship 2oordinator before you begin the internship

    8. 1tudents of "".+. I year are strongly encouraged to undertake internships

    with law schools7colleges7universities, firms, research centres or civil society

    organi$ations. /owever, the internship should have a primary legal

    component. In case of doubt, please clarify in writing with your 2lass

    Internship 2oordinator before you begin the internship.

    9. It is mandatory for all students undergoing Internships to maintain a day to

    day record in Internship :iaries, keeping the following in mind%-

    a0 6nter your experiences and impressions gathered that day.

    b0 Include adequate details to bring out what you have learnt, what

    impressions you had on law, lawyers, courts and society, what

    difficulties you encountered and how you solved them.

    c0 There is no defined format for entering your experiences etc., as theinternships vary in their nature. The record should invariably be legible,

    logical and brief. /owever the record must provide adequate data for

    evaluation of your work.

    d0 2hoose two cases out of those you come across in the course of the

    internship and write a note on each of them. These case notes may be

    recorded in the Internship :iary itself or may be annexed separately.

    In internships where case work is not involved, detailed written reports

    on two of the assignments undertaken by the student may be submitted.

    submitted later than six days willbe marked $ero. 2ase notes must be

    submitted along with the Internship :iary. If not submitted on time, they

    will be marked $ero.

    Internship diaries cannot be signed by alumni who have graduated in the

    last five years e.g. if the internship is being done in '=&=, the alumnusshould have graduated in '==8 or earlier0

    whom the Internship was being undertaken
