This bibliography bridges the gap between the last Annual International Bibliography of Publications on the History of Sport and Physical Education 1995/96 published in The International Journal of the History of Sport (14, 3 December 1997) and the beginning of the new annual listing published as a separate issue to The International Journal of the History of Sport (2002).

The vast increase in the literature published on the history of sport and the broadening remit of the annual listing to include popular as well as academic histories of sport has necessitated a separate issue.

It is also interesting to note that the annual number of publications has increased from around 250 to 1,000 a year over the last decade. This is due in part to the fact that during the late 1980s and 90s, many clubs, leagues and governing bodies of sport have celebrated their centenaries and produced histories to mark this occasion and commemorate their achievements. It is also the result of the growing popularity and realization of the importance and significance of sports history research within academe. Although the number of sports history courses taught within Sports Studies/Physical Education departments has declined in the UK, it has mushroomed in departments of history, at undergraduate and post-graduate level, facilitated in part, by the introduction of modular degrees in just about every institution of higher education. Also, the number of students in higher education is almost double what it was a decade ago and this must have had some impact and no doubt explains the growing number of higher degree students pursuing sports history research. A number of recent publications also illustrate the growing interest in sports history within local history societies, etc. The increased profile of sport within the wider community has spurred an increased number of sport journalists, interest groups such as the Association of Cricket Statisticians and Historians and the growth of documentaries and quizzes and on the radio and television.

The explosion of sports history literature in recent years has made it increasingly difficult to keep abreast of what is published, especially in non-mainstream sports history journals, multi-disciplinary conferences, minor club histories privately published, etc. Because of where I am geographically based it is obviously easier to keep abreast of publications emanating from the UK and this is why at this point in time, the coverage is more comprehensive for Britain than anywhere else in the world. While every effort will be made to rectify this bias in future editions, via means outlined below, and the employment of editorial support, it is doubtful that I will ever be able to document the literature in certain other parts of the world to anything like the same degree. Although I have included a selection of publications on sport in the ancient civilizations, I do not attempt to duplicate the excellent work of Wolfgang Decker whos annual bibliography in Nikephoros provides an invaluable source of literature on the subject in its wider perspective and the same in respect of Baseball and the annual listing of its

  • literature in Baseball Research. To date, the only non-English language publications included are very limited. I am sadly lacking in linguistic skills to extend searches to foreign language publications in any comprehensive way on my own. Following the lack of any response to my request in the IJHS two years ago (The Future of Sports History Bibliography, Intemational Journal of the History of Sport, Vol. 11, No. 2 (August 1994, pp.3267), another way of trying to encourage collaborative effort in order to achieve a higher degree of comprehensive coverage of the worlds literature has been to mount the annual bibliography on the World Wide Web and to provide a submission form encouraging authors, publishers and information workers to post details of additional items for inclusion. Contributions are also encouraged via more conventional channels of communication (fax, letter, etc.) if preferred.

As one might expect, some publications do not come to light or accessible to the compiler until some time after their date of publication and some publications do not actually appear until some time after the date given in the publishers promotional literature or national bibliographies. The demand to publish the listing as soon as possible, on the other hand, means that it is not acceptable to wait until one is confident that just about everything has been identified before going to print. This is why several earlier publications might appear in subsequent annual listings.

The bibliography includes books, periodical articles, chapters, conference papers and theses. Length and level of scholarship are no longer considerations in what is included or left out (as they were in the annual bibliography published in the International Journal of History of Sport).

In terms of structuring the bibliography I have stuck to a very simple format although the intention is to develop this in future editions, especially as the range of topics grows in volume. The literature is divided primarily by continent and then by country with sections in each country for reference works, sports in general, histories of individual sports in those countries, regional studies, and then collective and individual biography. Sub-divisions are included only where a significant volume of items have been included (e.g. Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Great Britain, USA, etc.). In medium size sections the order is alphabetical by sport. In sections containing only a few references, no subject divisions have been made, references are simply included in alphabetical order of the author. References I have not managed to translate or classify because their titles gave no clues to their content I have included in a Miscellaneous section at the end. I welcome comments on the structure for further development. It is admitted that some publications may have been misplaced because the detailed contents were not known to the compiler. For this reason, the user is advised to check other sections, especially the more general sections for items of potential interest. A book on the history of baseball would be placed in the world-wide or inter-continental section, unless the title indicated it had a unique bias such as the NBA, but of course, the title often fails to indicate the exact scope of the book.

I have continued to include only basic bibliographical detail. I appreciate that this is not ideal, but it does have the advantage of providing a common denominator for all of the entries, one based on the most basic of sources of information on which I rely. It also helps reduce space and keep the cost of the published product down. Fortunately, advances in information technology, in recent years, have made it easier to get that additional information if required via the many public on-line library catalogues

  • accessible over the Internet for those requiring more information about an individual entry. The plans for the future are to cumulate all the entries from the many different compilations I have compiled into a single, easily searchable computer based database to provide a global one-stop shop for the sports historian. It is hoped to publish this both in CD-ROM format and to mount an on-line version on the World Wide Web. This will have the distinct advantage over a hard copy of being searchable on a number of fields using key words with Boolean operations, etc.

Unfortunately, it was not until the latter stages of preparing the manuscript that I became aware of some significant errors. These related to order and duplication. A problem when relying on some library catalogues, publishers catalogues, lists of new publications printed in journals and magazines, newsletters and notes from friends is that the bibliographical detail is not consistent, sometimes limited and not necessarily indicative of content. Hence a book entitled the history of golf published in New York might only cover developments in the United States but if this fact is not known, it will have been entered into the World-Wide Golf section. Likewise a biography of a famous international athlete might discuss developments at several of the clubs they belonged to in their home country and abroad. However, it will only have one location, which will be based upon their nationality at the height of their fame. One is therefore advised to consult all the possible sources one might think of. A limited amount of cross-referencing has been included where possible but this does not extend to such issues as ethnicity, gender, etc. for which there are large numbers of entries scattered throughout the volume.

At the stage these were discovered, it was too late to reprocess them through the numbering program and so I decided to simply denote where duplications were identified that the entry had been withdrawn. The few that were out of order unfortunately remain so and so the user checking a particular section for a particular author may have to be a little flexible and search a few references ether side of where it should be before deciding that it must be missing. The blame lies entirely with the compiler although it is important to appreciate that several of the resources on which I relied for information were lacking in bibliographic detail. My philosophy for a current awareness publication was to focus on coverage (i.e. make it as comprehensive as possible) and currency (make it available as soon as possible) even if this meant going to print without all the details that users would like to have included. Those wishing to complete the missing detail can relatively easily track it down using the most appropriate on-line OPACs. It would have been wasteful of my time to spend the extra 80% of effort tracking down the detail at the expense of comprehensive coverage

I am also sufficiently modest to realize that there will be omissions. Whilst I unreservedly apologize for these, I am still not exactly sure where they may have been made. I believe that coverage has increased year on year and so it is more comprehensive for 1999 than 1995. The compiler welcomes details of omissions and mistakes and will publish them as corrigenda and addenda in the annual listings. Similarly, authors and publishers are invited to e-mail to me the detail of works they wish to see included, especially local and small print publications, publications emanating from outside the UK, articles published in non-mainstream journals and anthologies, etc.
