2013: A very important year for Cambridge ESOL
As from January this year Cambridge ESOL will be introducing a new name for
their organisation: Cambridge English Language Assessment. This change will
be phased in over the course of 2013 and the exams themselves, as well as
certificates, statements of results, etc, will change in November 2013.
Naturally, the logo for the organisation will also
change and you will soon start to see this version
instead of the former one:
But 2013 will also be a very special year for Cambridge English because it will
mark the 100th
anniversary of Cambridge English: Proficiency, also known as
CPE. The first world administration ofCPEtook place in 1913.
As you very well know, the CPEexam has been revised and the new format iscoming into effect this year. If you are still not familiar with the changes, you can
refer to theCambridge English: Proficiencyweb pageto find out more about the
revision. In this website you will find different bulletins explaining the rationale
behind the revision to the different parts of the exam.
Contact us at the Anglo for further information! You will find our contact details
on the last page of this news bulletin.

The Cambridge English Parents Newsletter
Parents often want to help their kids to learn English and therefore Cambridge
English has developed a newsletter to support parents who would like to do so.
Have you seen any the past editions of this newsletter? If you have not, you can
clickhereto subscribe and receive future issues.
Among many things, the newsletter provides parents with tips and practical
ideas to help their kids to learn English, which you could use in your classes
yourself! Look at this activity which was published in the December edition:
Post-it Word Race
This fun, energetic game is for children of all ages who can read some English words. All you need are some small stickers (such as Post-its) and a pen. Children can
expand or review their vocabulary for things around the house, or the activity can beadapted for the park, garden, garage, etc.
1) Choose some things around the house to teach your children the English words for.2) Go around the house, naming and pointing at the objects (e.g. door, cupboard, and
Sams teddy bear). Children say the words and point.3) Repeat step 2 if necessary.4) Hand out a set of Post-its with the target words to each child.5) Children race to stick the Post-its on the correct place (on a door, a cupboard, etc.).
Iftheres only one child, you can use a stopwatch.
You can play regularly and add different words.
So why not make a note to inform parents about this possibility at your first
parents meeting this year? The newsletter also contains web links to online
games and Cambridge English learning resources, interesting articles about
learning English and very useful and interesting information about Cambridge
English exams. And remember to subscribe to the newsletter yourself! You will
certainly find it very useful.

Learning-Oriented Assessment (LOA)
Formative and summative are two terms we typically associate with
assessment and which you are most probably very familiar with. But what does
learning-oriented assessment (LOA) mean and how does it relate to formative
and summative assessment? How can LOA be effectively implemented in the
classroom so that it contributes to effective teaching and learning?
These are some of the issues that Miranda Hamilton discussed in the webinar
How can Assessment Support Learning? A Learning Oriented Approach
delivered on 14th
and 16th
January 2013. Clickhereto download the slides from
the Cambridge English Teacher Support website andhereto watch a recording
of the webinar.
In her presentation Miranda Hamilton proposes a very clear framework for
implementing LOA effectively and also looks into the future by suggesting ways
in which mini electronic assessments and electronic record-keeping can
become an aid to the language learning process. A very thought-provoking
webinar which will most likely get you thinking about how to integrate
assessment with learning in your teaching context. An excellent start to the New
Year and your development as a professional teacher!
