Why Nizhni Novgorod?

LocationIt is situated in the European centre of Russia on the confluence of the

Volga and Oka rivers 439 km to the east of Moscow. HistoryNizhni Novgorod was founded in 1221. The place of the Volga and the

Oka confluence attracted the attention of the grand duke Georgy (Yury) Vsevolodovich (the grandson of Yury Dolgoruky, the founder of Moscow). The image of Nizhni Novgorod is many-sided. Through the history the city was a «fortress», «the homeland of militia», which liberated Moscow from Polish invaders, «the Russia’s pocket», «the third capital» of Russia after Moscow and St.Petersburg, a «closed city» with many fortifications. Founded nearly 800 years ago, Nizhni Novgorod has retained many of its unique historic monuments, masterpieces of architecture and traditional culture. The city is on the UNESCO list of the top hundred cities worldwide that are most valuable in terms of culture.

The Nizhni Novgorod region is one of the richest regions in Russia for its variety of folk handicrafts such as Khokhlomskaya and Gorodetskaya paintings, Pavlovo metal art forging, Kazakovo filigree and wonderfuly painted Semenov matreshkas. Many of them have become the symbol of Russia and are popular all over the world.

Cultural and Leisure ActivitiesIn Nizhni Novgorod you will find a lot of opportunities for an interesting

pastime cinemas, entertainment centres, night clubs, restaurants, stadiums, well-equipped sport and fitness centres and so on.

Nizhni Novgorod is home to over 60 museums, exhibitions halls and galleries where you can learn about the city’s history, lives and work of its celebrities, achievements in art and culture, science and engineering.

There are eight theatres including the Drama Theatre, Comedy Theatre, Opera House, several chamber and symphonic orchestras, ballet and dance groups.

In the evening you can visit bright shows, foot tapping parties, karaoke bars, cafes&pubs or discover the nightclubs for dancing the night away.

Nizhni Novgorod State Philharmonic Hall named after M. Rostropovich is worldwide known among all judges of classic music. Russian and foreign musicians regularly put on concerts for classical music lovers here.

SportNizhni Novgorod is a city with a long sporting tradition and today is home to

no less than five professional sports teams competing at the highest professional level: the Nizhni Novgorod Basketball team, the FC Volga Football team, the Torpedo Ice Hockey team, the Start Bandy team and the Skif women’s Ice Hockey team.

There are more than 10 swimming pools, 15 ice skating rinks, 4 cross-country ski trails, 2 mountain ski centers, race track and lots of football and multi-sport centres. Nizhni Novgorod was included in the list of the cities to host the FIFA World Cup in 2018.

ClimateThe climate of Nizhni Novgorod is temperate continental with four distinctive

seasons. In Russia, the Celsius scale (0C) is used to measure air temperatures. Summers are usually dry, sunny and warm with the average mid-afternoon temperature about +250С in July, sometimes temperature exceeding +300C.

Spring and Autumn can be quite unsettled, sometimes with sun and rain or snowfall and strong winds on the same day. Winter is from December to March and usually with snow and the average temperature about -120С. Nizhni Novgorod is exceptionally beautiful in winter!

Why Lobachevsky State University of Nizhni Novgorod?

The Lobachevsky State University of Nizhni Novgorod – National Research University (UNN) was established in 1916. In 1918 it became the first State Higher Educational Institution of Soviet Russia. In 1956 the University was named after the great Russian mathematician and founder of non-Euclidean geometry Nikolai Lobachevsky.

Today UNN is classified as one of the top classical research universities in Russia. In 2009 Lobachevsky State University of Nizhni Novgorod was awarded a prestigious category «National Research University» by the Government of the Russian Federation.

Lobachevsky State University of Nizhni Novgorod is ranked 74 by the QS World University Ranking BRICS, and has five QS Stars for Excellence in Teaching, Employability, Innovation, and Facilities.

UNN is one of only 15 Russian universities awarded in 2013 with a prestigiousgrant of the Government of the Russian Federation to implement the LeadingUniversities International Competitiveness Enhancement Programme.

UNN is one of the leading classical research universities in Russia. Opportunities for International Students

Faculty for International Students is an innovative and dynamic faculty providing international education at UNN.

There are around 500 international students from over 65 countries of the World (Asia, Africa, Australia, Europe, North America and ex-USSR states) studying at UNN.

International students at UNN are offered a broad variety of educational programmes:Preparatory Course

It is a pre-university (foundation) course, which includes preparation of international students who plan to apply for degree programmes taught in Russian. The Programme includes the Russian language and field-specific disciplines training. The programme duration is one academic year if started in the fall semester, and one year and a half if started in the spring semester.

Short-Term Programmes «Russian Language and Culture Studies»Such programmes are organised throughout a year and include courses of the Russian language and culture of various duration with the content tailored to the needs of a particular student, or a group of students.

Summer School «Russian Summer»The Summer school provides an opportunity to study Russian language and also get acquainted with diverse and fascinating Russian culture! The duration of the Summer School Programme is 4 weeks.

Wide Range of Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree Programmes More than 250 Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes in such areas as economics, finance, law, international relations, psychology, sociology, history, journalism, advertising, information technologies, programming, physics, radio physics, mathematics, mechanics, chemistry, biology, sports and others.

PhD ProgrammesUNN offers a broad variety of doctoral programmes in different areas. All the classes are given in Russian (assumed, you have a specialist’s or master’s diploma). Bachelor’s Degree Programme «Information Technologies» taught in EnglishIt is a specialised programme for English-speaking International students instructed in English by the leading UNN professors and IT-practitioners on the modern IT base of UNN. Bachelor’s Degree Programme «International Relations» taught in EnglishThis programme brings together most important approaches to understanding political world around us, refining analytical and practical skills useful for a whole range of future careers and activities. Bachelor’s Degree Programme «Economics» taught in EnglishThe programme provides students with both the theoretical and practical knowledge in all fields of economic activity. Preparatory Courses

Faculty for International Students offers preparatory courses to international students who wish to attend the University Degree programmes in Russian. These courses provide instruction in the Russian language (30 academic hours a week) and basics of the main subjects corresponding to the selected field of study and necessary to enter the chosen degree programme (Natural Sciences, Humanities, or Economics).

Admission to the University is based on the results of the final examinations at the end of the preparatory courses. Successful trainees receive a University Certificate, which entitles the holder to enter the UNN.

To ensure that each trainee gets maximum attention, the studies at the preparatory courses are organized in groups. Additional individual lessons may be arranged for some students, when required. Only highly skilled instructors holding degrees in philology, psychology and other relevant subjects work in this programme.

Currently students representing more than 30 countries are undergoing their training in this pre-university programme. Student groups comprise trainees of different nationalities, which encourages mutual contacts and enrichment of cultures, helps to adapt easier to the new conditions.

Every year UNN students take high places in Russian Language contests and competitiones, festivals of national cultures.

Individual and Group Programmes

Russian Language and Cultural Studies for International StudentsRussian language courses are very popular with international students

coming to Russia. UNN has vast experience of teaching Russian to foreigners. From the early 1990s, Russian language courses for international students have been running at the University at the Faculty of Philology. Over the years, we had students from such countries as the USA, Germany, Great Britain, Finland, France, Sweden, Denmark, Italy, Spain, Norway, the Netherlands, Czech Republic, South Korea and China.

Russian language programmes are tailored to individual requirements of our students and to their level (beginners, intermediate or advanced). Course durations may vary from one month to a full academic year depending on the needs of individual students. Russian language classes for advanced-level students may be supplemented by lecture courses in Russian literature, etc.

International students with sufficient knowledge of Russian can study at UNN on individual study programmes in the areas of their choice. It may be a semester (or a year) abroad arrangement.

Summer School «Russian Summer»The summer school will give you an opportunity to study not only Russian

language but also get acquainted with diverse and fascinating Russian culture!The duration of the Programme is 4 weeks. The Russian Language Summer

School Programme includes 20 academic hours a week along with 2 classes of Country Studies. During the classes you will learn a live, modern language and many other new and exciting things.

The classes are conducted by highly-qualified trainers. All of them are UNN graduates and outstanding specialists not only in Philology, but also in Psychology and Culture Studies. They will teach you about Russian history and culture, character and habits of Russians.

Together with them you will set off to a breath-taking journey into the unexplored and beautiful Russia. And you will also be able to make friends with students from all over the world.

The course also includes interactive games, discussions, development and discussion of the projects created by students. If desired, field trips, visits to museums, zoos, theaters and cinemas can be organized for students.

Students have many opportunities to spend their leisure time in the City of Nizhni Novgorod, located in the very heart of the country. You can travel to Moscow, Vladimir and Suzdal, the oldest and the most magnificent cities of Russia, see the unique Makaryev Monastery, visit Diveyevo, the largest center of pilgrimage, and Boldino, where Russian genius poet Alexander Pushkin created some of his masterpieces.

Nizhni Novgorod also hosts many summer festivals, fairs and concerts. The night life of the city is also very comprehensive.

This programme is aimed at training experts in high-level programming for hi-tech companies of the information industry. The UNN diploma is your prerequisite for being competitive at the world hi-tech labor market.

UNN is engaged in successful cooperation with major international IT companies (Cisco Systems, Intel, Microsoft, NVIDIA, IBM, MERA) that provide the University with advanced computer equipment and software. This ensures that the educational process is based on the latest achievements in this field of science and technology. At the University, there are research laboratories established with the support of Intel Corporation as well as educational centres of Microsoft and Cisco Systems.

The University of Nizhni Novgorod was named by Bill Gates, chairman of Microsoft Corporation, among the world,s ten leading universities in the field of high-performance computing. In 2013 UNN built the powerful supercomputer «Lobachevsky», which is the second fastest supercomputer in Russia.

Lobachevsky State University of Nizhni Novgorod (UNN) has more than 50 years of experience in educating professionals in economics, management, finance and, more recently, entrepreneurship enriched by a favorable context of a historic industrial and commercial region, transformed nowadays into an area of knowledge and innovation.

Specialization in International Economics & MarketsThe International Economics and Markets major will assist students in

developing a deep understanding of the global economic transformations and international economic relations as well as in acquiring practical skills useful for undertaking an economic activity abroad. Knowledge of foreign languages is particularly important today as hundreds of thousands of businesses around the world are actively entering foreign markets.

Specialization in Finance & CreditThis major prepares students for professional careers in the financial industry

Master’s degree programmes in Mathematics and Computer Science aimed at developing professionals for systems integrators, software companies, large and medium-sized enterprises with their own IT departments, research organizations conducting research and development in the field of high technology. Mathematics and Computer Science graduates also progress onto a career in finance and investment analysis, in computing and industries which require algorithmic tools.

The programme focuses on computer modeling, simulation and visualization of technological and economic processes. This allows graduates to work not only in the field of information technology where they need to process and present the information, but also in areas requiring the development of mathematical models, data analysis, developing computational algorithms and their implementation.

A Master in Mathematics and Computer Science takes an in-depth look at the various fields of mathematics integrating a sizeable component on programming and new computer technologies. The programme establishes tangible connections between the various theories and methodologies unique to mathematics and computer science.

Master’s Degree Programme «Management» taught in English

A Master’s degree in management is gaining popularity in business education, and the number of students enrolled in the programme is growing rapidly worldwide. Student Life

Student ActivityThe University offers its students all the possibilities for creative and professional

fulfillment. During the school year, students can engage in a great variety of activities: culture and language clubs, sports clubs (from go-karting to parachuting), student business incubator, wits & humour competition, theater groups, the University choir, music and dance groups (modern, ethnic and Russian folk art), sports teams, the University newspaper and television, tourist club.

Leadership and creative workshops for student elite are organized every year, along with training seminars and workshops for married students, tours and scientific conferences.

International students are actively involved in campus life: together with Russian students they perform at concerts, celebrate student holidays, take part in competitions, festivals and sporting events, they are represented in the Student Council of the University.

The most popular and original events at the Faculty for International Students (FIS) include the ISOFT-NN football tournament, the Nizhni Novgorod Model of the United Nations, the New Year’s Concert of the FIS.

Student CouncilWithin the framework of inter-university activities, UNN actively participates

in the Nizhni Novgorod International Student Club. It also cooperates with various organizations, employers and authorities in the framework of support programs for international students.

The FIS Student Council, which sees its task in increasing the social role of students and promoting their participation in the academic and public life of the Faculty and the University, helps international students to realize their potential.

Library and Computer AccessStudents have access to over 2 000 000 items and to unique collection of

handwritten and early printed books, either through hard copies or electronically. There are variable loan periods for books and other items reflecting demand.

Our libraries provide students with access to computers with Internet and silent study areas to meet your various needs. Computer access is available in UNN main library and with wireless access throughout the University Campus students also have easy access to the Internet via a laptop.

Study Placement in RussiaInternational students can take a study placement at UNN for one or two

semesters. A study placement that meets all the individual educational priorities will be developed for each student.

Upon the successful completion of the study placement international students will receive certificates with the information in English or Russian about courses passed, exams taken and grades received. These certificates can also include the information about the workload of each discipline based on the unified European credit system ECTS.

UNN is a member of European academic mobility programmes ERASMUS MUNDUS and ERANET PLUS.

ScholarshipsUNN offers a range of different scholarship programmes for international talented

students to help cover tuition fees as well as living expenses. Priority will be given to students with high academic performance and who have shown great interest and motivation to study at UNN.

The scholarship can cover tuition for any programmes at UNN including degree programmes (English or Russian medium), study abroad programmes/internships, Russian language programmes and Summer School programmes.

The scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis.Research Scholarship

UNN offers scholarships for postgraduate (Ph.D.) and Master’s degree students for taking part in internship programs with the aim of mastering modern research methods and implemen tation of research projects in priority research areas of UNN under the guidance of UNN’s leading scientists. UNN is able to grant a limited number of scholarships to Summer School «Russian Summer» from July 7th till August 4th. Whatever your nationality, our summer school aims to help you not only progress in Russian language but also get acquainted with diverse and fascinating Russian culture whilst living in the heart of European Russia. During our classes you will learn a live, modern language and many other new and exciting things.Semester Abroad Scholarship

UNN runs a varied and successful semester study abroad programme. The scholarship programme is designed for international students who wish to spend one semester at UNN, taking undergraduate or postgraduate courses in the areas of their choice. This may be taken as an accredited part of your degree. Such an experience offers you the chance to travel, explore another cultures, make lifelong friends and enhance your career prospects.State Scholarship

UNN gained the right to participate in the process of selection of foreign students for programmes financed from the federal budget within the limits set by the Russian Ministry of Education and Science.

UNN accepts application for the contest from those willing to have their tuition for undergraduate or postgraduate programmes paid for by the Russian Government. The Russian Ministry of Education and Science makes the final decision on the assignment of state scholarships based on the documents selected by UNN.

State funding completely covers tuition. The recipient is provided with a monthly bursary and a place in the student dormitory.
