Welcome to the April 2017 edition of the

International Certification Newsletter. Fall

2016 was an exciting time for the ASCP BOC

international team. At the September BOC

Board of Governors meeting, the board revised

several international examination eligibility

requirements and approved requirements for

a new international specialist certification:

International Specialist in Molecular Biology,

SMB(ASCPi).

Just prior to the September board meeting,

Jennifer Young, CT (ASCP)CM, ASCP Director

of International Strategy & Operations, was

the Keynote speaker at PAMET-USA, Inc.’s

15th Biennial National Convention. Jennifer’s

presentation highlighted global connections

made through ASCPi with a focus on global

growth. The BOC also exhibited at the 32nd

World Congress of the International Federation

of Biomedical Laboratory Science (IFBLS)

in Kobe, Japan. The 2016 IFBLS Congress

marked the first time three Japanese medical

laboratory associations met simultaneously

for a joint event. As such, it represented a

unique opportunity for the BOC to reach out

to Japanese medical laboratory professionals

and students.

We are also starting off 2017 by strengthening

our efforts in the Middle East and North Africa.

On Feb. 4, at the Four Points Sheraton in Dubai,

UAE, the BOC hosted a Middle East Advisory

Board Chairs’ Meeting to discuss challenges

and successes we’ve had in promoting

ASCP BOC international certification in the

Persian Gulf region. The international team

then staffed an exhibit booth at MedLab from

Feb. 6-9 in Dubai, distributing information

on international certification and CMP to

thousands of laboratory professionals.

Clearly, 2017 is already shaping up to be a

very successful year for promoting ASCPi

across the globe. We hope you enjoy reading

contribute globally to the highest standards of

patient safety.

The 32nd World Congress of the International Federation of Biomedical Laboratory Science (IFBLS) took place from Aug. 31 to Sept. 4, 2016, in Kobe, Japan. The theme was “International Innovation of Laboratory Medicine Basic and Advanced.” The 2016 congress was unique because it simultaneously incorporated the congresses of three Japanese medical laboratory associations: Congress of the Japanese Association of Medical Technologists (JAMT), Congress of the Japanese Society of Laboratory Medicine (JSLM), and Congress of the Japanese Association of Medical Technology Education (JAMTE). The IFBLS World Congress marked an excellent opportunity for ASCP BOC to meet and exchange ideas with a large number of Japanese technologists, doctors, professors, and students.

During the event, ASCP BOC distributed information on ASCPi certification, CMP, and Labs Are Vital. Patricia A. Tanabe, MPA, MLS (ASCP)CM, Executive Director, ASCP BOC, and Jennifer Young, CT(ASCP)CM, ASCP, Director of International Strategy & Operations, also met with a number of ASCP BOC International Advisory Board Members and Chairs representing Qatar, Greece, India, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Philippines, and Taiwan.

Ms. Young served as an invited lecturer to the congress and gave a presentation entitled “HPV DNA Testing in Primary Cervical Cytology Screening: The Controversies in its Clinical Applications.”

Updates from the Fall 2016 BOC Board of Governors’ Meeting

The ASCP BOC Board of Governors met in Las Vegas on Sept.17-18, 2016. The following actions were taken by the Board:

• Eligibility requirements were revised for the following international categories.

International Specialist in Blood Banking, SBB(ASCPi); and International Technologist in Blood Banking, BB(ASCPi)

International Specialist in Chemistry, SC(ASCPi); and International Technologist in Chemistry, C(ASCPi)

International Technologist in Cytogenetics, CG(ASCPi)

International Specialist in Cytotechnology, SCT(ASCPi)

International Specialist in Hematology, SH(ASCPi); and International Technologist in Hematology, H(ASCPi)

International Specialist in Microbiology, SM(ASCPi); and International Technologist in Microbiology, M(ASCPi)

International Technologist in Molecular Biology, MB(ASCPi)

• Eligibility requirements were approved for a new international certification: International Specialist in Molecular Biology, SMB(ASCPi). The first examination administration for this new category is anticipated in January 2018.

• The requirements for recertification for individuals required to complete the Credential Maintenance Program (CMP), and who have allowed their certification to expire for 10 or more years, were approved.

• The requirements for those individuals with expired NCA certification who have not reinstated with the Board of Certification by Nov. 1, 2019, the same requirements will also apply.

• The Guidelines for Ethical Behavior that all certificants shall abide by were revised.

PAMET-USA, Inc.’s 15th Biennial National Convention

The Philippine Association of Medical Technologists (PAMET) USA, Inc.’s 15th Biennial National Convention took place on Aug. 6 at the Palace Station Hotel in Las Vegas. Numerous representatives from PAMET-USA, Inc., member chapters were in attendance. PAMET-USA, Inc.,

was formed in the 1980s when many Filipino medical technologists began relocating to U.S. states, such as California, Illinois, and New York.Jennifer Young, CT(ASCP)CM, ASCP, Director of International Strategy & Operations, was invited by PAMET-USA, Inc., to keynote the 2016 convention. During a meeting with PAMET-USA, Inc., leadership, Ms. Young discussed education, advocacy, and certification as possible opportunities for collaboration between ASCP and PAMET-USA, Inc.

ASCP Pathology Update 2016 took place Nov. 3-4 at the Dusit Thani Hotel in Abu Dhabi, UAE. The two-day meeting brought together a remarkable group of pathologists and laboratory professionals from all parts of the Middle East and beyond. The enthusiastic participation contributed to robust discussions and helped to make this international conference a resounding success!

ASCP BOC recognized the following institutions for excellence in achieving ASCPi certifications:

Given the success of the meeting, Pathology Update will be expanding in 2017 with dates in Dubai, November 14-15 and Abu Dhabi November 16-17.

Just prior to MedLab, Ms. Young and Ms. Tanabe facilitated a Middle East Advisory Board Chairs’ Meeting. The meeting provided attendees with an opportunity to network and learn about the latest news in BOC certification and report on activities in their region. ASCP and ASCP BOC supported an exhibit booth during the congress and distributed information on certification, education, live events, and continuing professional development.

2016 Russian Congress of Laboratory Medicine

The Russian Congress of Laboratory Medicine (RCLM) is an annual event organized in accordance with the orders of the Russian Federation Ministry of Health, Department of Health of the City of Moscow, the Russian Ministry of Industry, the Russian Trade Federation, and the Russian National Medical Chamber. The 2016 Congress took place Oct. 12-14 in Moscow, Russia.

Dionysis Vourtsis, Chair of the ASCP BOC Greece Advisory Board and Regional Representative for Europe, attended the event on behalf of the ASCP BOC and delivered a presentation that promoted ASCP BOC international certification.

Approximately 6,000 students and 4,330 laboratory professionals from across Russia attended the event. Mr. Vourtsis was able to meet with a number of laboratory managers, technologists, as well as with Anatoli Kochetov, President of the Russian Association of Laboratory Specialists and Organizations.

On Jan. 26, 2017, the Tennessee Medical Laboratory Board recognized the international certification examinations as a second alternate pathway for licensure in Tennessee. Examinations must be completed after the following dates for the following licensure categories:

Oct. 1, 2014 For Medical Laboratory Technician licensure:Medical Laboratory Technician examinations [MLT(ASCP) or MLT(ASCPi)]

Inactive Status Due to Military ServiceTo be considered for an extension of your CMP cycle due to mandatory National Service, please follow the steps below. The $40 inactive status fee is waived in this case.

1. Submit a written request with a copy of the document (PDF) you received requesting you report for National Service, including the beginning and ending dates.

2. Written request and PDF document attachment may be emailed to cmpinternational@ascp.org.3. Requests for inactive status are reviewed and approved on an individual basis.4. Your CMP cycle may be extended based on the timing and length of your military service.

A new certification will be offered in Cytometry in the fall of 2017. This certification will be offered in conjunction with the International Society for Advancement of Cytometry (ISAC) and the International Clinical Cytometry Society (ICCS). Please see the attached press release.
