Prof. Zhou LinDeanAntai College of Economics & ManagementShanghai Jiao Tong University

From the Dean

As I take the helm as Dean of Antai College of Economics and

Management, I would like to share with you my enthusiasm and

expectations about the future of our College.

In 1918 Jiao Tong University launched a management program,

one of the first of its kind in China. Entering the new millennium,

we remain one of China’s leaders in business education and

research. Underpinning our success are our core values:

excellence, fundamentals, discipline, practicality, and innovation.

Our faculty members, many trained in top international programs,

are producing original research ideas that are recognized and

appreciated by their peer researchers. Our MBA and EMBA

programs are consistently placed at or near the top of various

national rankings. The MBA program was ranked 77th globally by

the Financial Times in 2014, and the Masters of Science in

Management program was ranked 37th globally by the Financial

Times in 2009. Our success has earned us a solid reputation

within the international community of business education. Our

Program is accredited by EQUIS, AMBA and AACSB. We also have

many global partners such as MIT, USC, and UBC, with whom we

collaborate on various projects.

To become a truly world-class business school, however, we

must work even harder. We must establish a governance

structure that promotes academic freedom and emphasizes

faculty involvement; we must foster a faculty team that comprises

well-known scholars and experts; we must improve and innovate

our curriculum to further cultivate future business leaders in the

global economy; we must provide a platform that facilitates

interaction among scholars and practitioners; and we must

strengthen the alumni network that connects the College and our

graduates for life.

Over the years we have been blessed with unwavering support by

all of our stakeholders, from students to faculty members, from

business partners to general public, and from the local

community to our international friends. At this critical moment in

our development, we need your support more than ever. Together

we will turn challenges into opportunities, dreams into realities,

adding a new chapter to Antai’s fabled history.

Why Shanghai?

Shanghai is a fascinating Chinese metropolis offering endless possibilities for sight-seeing and leisure. The city boasts architecture from various eras and dynasties throughout China’s history, and one can commonly view historical buildings and temples alongside modern high rises. This contrast is evident from the banks of the Huangpu River, which has become reputed as “the International Fair of World Architecture”. Shanghai is also known for its local Shanghai cuisine, as well its variety of Chinese and international restaurants.

Shanghai possesses an extremely convenient transportation network within the city, including a comprehensive 13-line subway system, as well as extensive bus routes and taxi services. The railways offer extremely efficient transportation between cities near and far, featuring a vast countrywide network of modern, high-speed trains. Shanghai also offers world-class airports which are extremely accommodating to international guests.

Most importantly, Shanghai is the most international and largest commercial city in China, and is the ideal location for international students interested in studying and working. Shanghai offers the most career

opportunities in multinational and local companies in China. The city currently supports a foreign professional population of around 300,000, and it is the city of choice for company headquarters of multinationals from around the world. Living costs in Shanghai are very reasonable compared to most Western cities, and one needs to budget only a moderate amount for eating, transportation, and other basic living expenses. Simply put, for those looking to learn and work in the most dynamic, international business center in China, Shanghai is by far the best choice.

What is your teaching style/philosophy?

I believe that students learn best when they are actively involved in the classroom. Sitting back and passively listening to a professor does not work as well for most students. I frequently pose questions and short problems in class that help keep the students involved. I stress practical examples and applications of concepts so that students see how they relate to the “real world.” I encourage questions and discussion.

What do you like best about ACEM?

I have really enjoyed interacting with the students. I have met many interesting and enthusiastic people. I also appreciate the diligence of the administration and staff.

Research Interests

My research focuses on the economics of organizations. I have focused specific attention on corporate governance, including executive compensation, boards of directors and corporate contractual practices. Most of my work utilizes actual data to test economic hypotheses relating to organizational practices.

Industry Experience

I have worked as a consultant for Fortune 500 corporations and major law firms. Most recently I have served as an expert witness in legal disputes relating to corporate governance issues, arising from the recent financial crisis. Earlier I spent significant time working on legal cases involving the former Enron Corporation.

How is your Research Related to China?

China has been growing rapidly and is increasingly working with firms outside of the country. Chinese firms also obtain financial capital in international markets. Corporate governance and contracting issues are very important in these activities, and my research sheds light on both governance problems and potential solutions for designing more effective procedures.

Hobbies

I love classical music and opera. I also enjoy playing golf and skiing. I spend significant time reading books. I have a growing interest in Chinese history and culture. I am a Life Master in bridge, but have largely given up the game due to other interests.

Professor Ilan Alon

What is your teaching style/philosophy?

I always try to make sure that during the class the average student comprehends the subjects I teach. To assure this, immediately aster the students have analyzed a basic question, I osten cast to the students several variations of the question, the answers to which enable me to tell if they have indeed understood the subject. I also emphasize the importance of grasping the fundamental principles of accounting rather than memorizing the detail of problem-solving techniques.

What do you like best about ACEM?

What I like the best about ACEM is the IMBA students and the staff. First, the students are eager to learn new things. Their enthusiasm for learning really makes me happy, almost compelling me to feel like I must teach them everything I know of accounting. They are also very open-minded, and I enjoy every moment I spend with them. The assistance from the staff is also superb, to which I am always grateful.

Professor Mel Chudzik

What is your teaching style/philosophy?

My style is that of a facilitator to have the students obtain an understanding of the fundamentals osten course by engaging the students in critical thinking and problem solving sessions. I encourage students to actively participate so they can express their opinions and receive feedback about these opinions. Case studies and current topic discussions, osten with the students leading, along with collaborative projects create an active student to student learning environment. I use written and oral submissions to determine the student learning outcomes. I always learn something from every class

I teach but my real reward is to see those learning moments and the progress the students make through the course. I do attempt to become knowledgeable about the students skills, their reasons for taking the class, and their expectations about the class for me to better meet their goals.

What do you like best about ACEM?

I like the best the highly qualified students both Chinese and international. The mix of cultural and business backgrounds makes a rich learning environment. I do appreciate the dedication of the students to their studies and a strong work ethic. My work is also made easier by the complete support I get from the ACEM staff and administration.

Research Interests

My research interests have been in global businesses and most recently foreign companies doing business in China and Chinese companies doing business outside of China with a focus on the US market. Most recently I have an interest in small start-up companies and their opportunities across borders.

Why did you choose ACEM?

As a professional of consulting, before my application to MBA program, I did a comprehensive study and research. In 2009, I read all the MBA school ranking and introductions in Shanghai, ACEM is definitely the winner in at least below aspects:

b) Great location (in downtown, vs other schools is obviously a plus)

c) Reasonable tuition fee with outstanding quality

d) ACEM creatively invented a “pre-interview” session, to provide opportunities to the students who are willing to study MBA with a strong career background, but relatively less competitive in written test for the entrance examination, it demonstrated the intelligent from the school about how to attract excellent students

What was your favorite part of your ACEM experience?

Looking back for my 2 years’ study in ACEM, there are two points impressed me a lot:

a) Diversified Students’ Background: before my MBA study, my 6-year working experiences were purely in MNC, aster I entered the school, I found there are different outstanding classmates from different industries &companies, that some from SOE, some from private company as entrepreneur and for sure there are international students from other countries. Even though at times this was not an easy task, it was also the most rewarding part of the IMBA program. Filippo Cirulli From:Bocconi University, Italy

Olivier Puissant BaeyensFrom: Leuven University, Belgium

The best thing about IMBA courses is that most of them want to make you think. My first course“International Business ”is the course I enjoyed most: I have never had a so inspiring and smart professor that really gave me the opportunity to explore new point of views also really far from mine. In addition, he gave me also the chance to develop a more critical point of view thanks to a deeper evaluation of all the alternatives.

I really enjoyed the IMBA program in Antai. The school is great and the students are very nice. My most valuable experience during my study in China was not only having the opportunity to meet students from different cultures, but also learning from teachers from different countries with their own unique teaching styles.

Pauline GouinFrom: EDHEC, France

The IMBA program was very interesting because it covered a large range of courses in every area (finance, accounting, human resources, marketing). It’s a very complete program and every student can find courses that suit their major. Teachers are of a very high academic level and come from different countries, so they are able to provide us with information about business in their countries as well as cultural differences in work place.

Ryan JiangExchange to: University of Southern California, USA

Going on exchange at USC has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my MBA journey from both academic and cultural perspective.Study in USC is challenging and valuable, not only because the quality of the finance and Investment courses I chose, but also for the most intelligent and diversified student body in the states and other countries. Moreover, this opportunity allowed me to experience and learn about the the society, the culture and the people of the United States, which broadened my horizon and shisted to a bigger global mindset.Overall, USC is a right option for those who want exposure to a typical U.S. business school

Sophie GongExchange to: ESCP Europe, France

ESCP Europe is the world's oldest business school. With its five urban campuses in Paris, London, Berlin, Madrid, and Torino, ESCP Europe has a true European identity offering a unique style of business education. ESCP Europe’s network of around 100 partner universities extends the School’s reach from European to worldwide. The course “Marketing of innovations” is the course I enjoyed most: I've never had such an interactive and practical course before with a smart and energetic professor who provided us with several classic and newly updated cases. In addition, with a buddy system called Tandem, the International Partnerships Department organized a series of activities to help the exchange students from all over the world adapting and enjoying life in Paris. It was fascinating for me to spend 4 months in ESCP Europe in Paris studying with top students and professors.

Rachel ChanExchange to: HKUST, Hong Kong

HKUST Business School is one of the world’s top 10 business school, and going there for the exchange semester is absolutely a most valuable experience for my MBA. Based in Hong Kong, HKUST is actually highly globalized and provides a good platform to study up-to-date business cases in a diversified culture; work closely with team members from global elite business schools; and learn from world-class teaching faculties, who mostly have years’ immediate experience as high-level executives in global companies. While on the other hand, it has the advantage of being close to mainland both geographically and culturally, and provides much more in-depth study on doing business and management in a Chinese environment, and access to visit and communicate with leading local companies comparing to other top business schools in the world.

Hans Zischka From: Technical University of Munich, Germany

I really enjoyed taking part in the MBA program. The lectures are different from ours at home—they are more practical and interactive. It was fascinating for me to work with a mixture of Chinese and international students.

Charis Lee Exchange to: USA University of Rochester (Simon School of Business)

Simon School of Business has a great reputation for its financial sector in U.S. There are some popular courses like‘cases in finance’, ‘investment’, ‘pricing policy’ etc. I chose three include ‘cases in finance’, ‘private equity’ and ‘entrepreneurship’. The professors are experienced and strict. There were quite a lot exercise sets, practical teamwork and lectures, whichkept I busy, but also I felt the improvement on myself. Rochester is a scenic and quiet city located in east-north U.S. I like Rochester and Simon. It will bean unforgettable experience in my life.

Shosei Ko Exchange to: Waseda University

Courses in WBA were very practical. Many of them were not just “sit and listen” classes, but the students were frequently asked to participate and share the ideas. I especially like the courses related to entrepreneurship. Those were taught by American professor and some contents are designed to be similar to Harvard Business School. These courses require a lot of writing and group works, but with highly motivated classmates, I enjoyed doing those assignments. It was a great opportunity to express what you have learned in my first year MBA courses and how to apply them to the real world.

At WBS, I was able to make friends from all over the world. Students are from various countries such as Thailand, Korea, Uzbekistan, France, Italy, and U.S.A. I also enjoyed having conversations with them because they all have different working experiences. I would like to show the great appreciation to Antai and WBS for having the partnership and gave me such a great opportunity to learn at WBS.

At ACEM, there are many extracurricular activities and organizations available to students to get involved with.

MBASA organizes a variety of professional development and social activities during the academic year, and most of the events are open to international and exchange students. International and exchange students are encouraged to join the SJTU MBASA.

Company tours are regularly organized as off-campus tours to meet executives of major corporations. As an example, students visited the Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant in Zhejiang Province. This visit was supported by alumni who work at the power plant. This event provided students with not only first-hand experience in China's nuclear industry, but also with the understanding of advanced nuclear management and the company’s corporate culture. These kind of trips not only benefit our MBAs, but also connect companies with our students.

Chinese MBA Entrepreneurship Competition was founded in 2002 by Shanghai Jiaotong University. Aster more than ten years of development, it provides entrepreneurial opportunities for Chinese MBA students.
