CascaisisacosmopolitansuburbofthePortuguesecapitalandoneoftherichestmunicipalitiesinPortugal.TheformerfishingvillagegainedfameasaresortforPortugal’sroyalfamilyinthelate19thcenturyandearly20thcentury.Onthistourwewillstrollalongcobblestonestreetsandyou’llhearaboutthehistoryofthetown.We’llwalkouttothepointtoseetheoldfortandtakeintheviewsofthemouthoftheTagusandthegreatseabeyond.ThenwewillmakeourwaytoCasadasHistórias,themuseumdedicatedtothegreatPortuguesepainterPaulaRego,whowasaveryclosefriendofAlbertodeLacerda’s.There,we’llhaveaprivatetourofbothRego’sworkandthebuilding,whichhasgarneredmanyawards.We’lllunchatthemuseumandthenmakeourwaythroughthelabyrinthinestreetsofCascaistothetrainbacktoLisbon.

TheCasa das Histórias Paula RegowasdesignedbythearchitectEduardoSoutodeMoura(PritzkerArchitecturePrize2011).Thebuildingmakesuseofcertainaspectsoftheregion’shistoricalarchitecture,whichisherereinterpretedinacontemporaryway.Itcanbeimmediatelyrecognizedthankstoitstwopyramid-shapedtowersandthered-coloredconcreteusedinitsconstruction.

Paula RegowasborninLisbonon26January1935.Withherprodigiousimagination,PaulaRegohasexploredmanydifferenttechniquesandartisticlanguagesoverthecourseofhercareerwhilecontinuingtodisplaysurprisingcoherencethroughoutherwork.Shehasheldcountlesssoloandretrospectiveexhibitionsatleadinginternationalmuseumsandgalleries,andshe’swonahostofawardsandprizes.In1990,RegowasappointedthefirstAssociatedArtistoftheNationalGalleryinLondon.
