INTERNATIONAL INDIAN SCHOOL, RIYADH
VI – VIII SECTION
Academic Year 2020 - 2021
WORK SHEET : YEARLY EXAMINATION
CLASS :- VIII
SUBJECT :- ENGLISH
TOPICS COVERED:- 1. READING 2. WRITING
3. GRAMMAR 4. LITERATURE
TOPIC :- READING
TOPICS COVERED:- 1. PASSAGE 2. POEM
Q.1. Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions
that follows :- STUDENT LIFE
1. A student’s life is considered to be the happiest part of an individual’s life.
During this period, an individual spends a carefree time which is not affected by
the worries and miseries of the world.
2. It is the time when one prepares for his future, therefore it is of great
importance. Whatever he does during this span of time ultimately impacts his
entire life.
3. Students must make sure that they don’t waste time and instead utilize it by
cultivating healthy habits like reading books, playing sports or by participating in
creative activities like music, dance and art. This period acts as a base during
which an individual can give shape to the future course of his life. For example,
if someone wants to be a doctor, he should gather knowledge either from his
family members, teachers or perhaps from real doctors regarding the skills
required to be a doctor. This would give him an idea about what it takes to be a
Page 2 of 16
doctor and whether he has those qualities in him or not. For instance, if
someone has a weak heart and cannot stand the sight of blood, will it be possible
for him to study medical science? Hence, such research should be conducted
during the course of student life.
4. In the modern age where everything from eatables to information is available to
us at the click of a mouse, or is just a phone call away, there is always a
tendency to be lethargic and lazy. We tend to be happy about the present and
do not prepare ourselves for the future struggle. Students might think that,
just like everything else, whatever they want in life would be easily available. As
a result, many cannot handle the pressure when they face real-life situations.
Parents must help the children and make them realise that everything is not
easily available and one has to struggle to achieve certain things and success in
life.
5. Today there are many temptations that can divert a student from his goal.
However, proper discipline can ensure that one does not lose his way. Parents
too play a major role in helping their child utilize the student life well. They
need to share their own experiences of student life with the child so that he is
aware of what lies ahead of him. In this way he will be prepared to face the
challenges of student life and emerge victorious in life.
Q.1.1. On the basis of your reading of the above passage, Complete the following sentences by writing the appropriate words/phrases against the correct blank number:-

___________________________ in real-life situations.
(e) The author portrays one of the negative characteristics of the students as
being lethargic / lazy. Name one of the positive or the strongest quality to be possessed by students. ____________________ . (Use Adjective)

Q.2. Read the following poem carefully and answer the questions that
follow :- HOW TO TELL WILD ANIMALS
If ever you should go by chance
To jungles in the east;
And if there should to you advance
A large and tawny beast,
If he roars at you and you’re dyin’
You’ll know it is the Asian Lion…
Or if some time when roaming round,
A noble wild beast greets you,
With black stripes on a yellow ground,
Just notice if he eats you.
This simple rule may help you learn
The Bengal Tiger to discern.
If strolling forth, a beast you view,
Whose hide with spots in peppered,
As soon as he has leapt on you,
You’ll know it is the Leopard.
‘Twill do no good to roar with pain,
He’ll only leap and leap again.
If when you’re walking round your yard
You meet a creature there,
Who hugs you very, very hard,
Be sure it is a Bear
If you have any doubts, I guess
He’ll give you just one more caress.
Though to distinguish beast of prey
A novice might nonplus.
The Crocodile you always may
Tell from the Hyena thus;
Hyenas come with merry smiles;
But if they weep they’re Crocodiles.
The true Chameleon is small.
A lizard sort of thing;
He hasn’t any ears at all
And not a single wing.
If there is nothing on the tree,
‘Tis the chameleon you see. - Carolyn Wells
