ALS Ice Bucket Challenge Spreads Worldwideby David Block

Peter Frates enjoyed a happy life. He played baseball for Boston College all four years of school and in his senior year he was team captain.

ings only got better. A er graduating from Boston College in 2007, he played professional baseball in Germany for several years. In 2012, Boston College hired him to be their Director of Baseball Operations. Unfortunately, that same year, he was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) a disease that destroys motor nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord causing progressive paralysis and ultimately death.

“He was determined to go on with his life,” said Peter’s father, John Frates in a phone interview with this I.G. writer. In June 2013, 15 months a er the diagnosis, Peter married. is past September 1, Peter and his wife Julie had a girl - their rst child whom they named Lucy. “Peter had everything going for him, then this {ALS} had to happen,” said John Frates.

Peter Frates, 29, of Bevery Massachusetts - about 25 minutes outside of Boston - refused to go down without a ght. His arsenal was the Ice Bucket Challenge.

Life of Fearless Mexican Artist Depicted in Fridaby Kemal Moise e epic lm Frida depicts the life of the heroic Mexican painter Frida Kahlo; actress Salma Hayek portrays the famed painter. e biographical lm commences with Frida as a young adolescent girl that has a passion for painting. Frida’s youth is stolen by a tragic bus accident, which leaves her crippled.Frida’s family doctor explains to her parents that Frida will most certainly be bed stricken for the rest of her life and she will not be able to care for herself. However, Frida makes a miraculous recovery, but she is le crippled and she experiences the anguish of being an outcast. Frida abandoned her medical studies to pursue her painting career.

Moreover, during her recovery Frida begins to paint self-portraits; she realizes that her passion for painting may be more than just a hobby.

(ALS, from Front)John Frates explained that a young friend of Peter’s was also diagnosed with ALS. e friend had the idea of asking three people for a hundred dollars each to ght ALS. If they said no, the three friends would be asked to pour a bucket of ice water over their heads and then each would donate $10.00. A erwards, the three friends would get three people they knew to do the Ice Bucket Challenge. “When Peter got involved this summer, the media took notice,” his father said. “Peter was a local baseball hero, so the media was interested in him.” His father emphasized that Peter did not start the Ice Bucket Challenge. “He was the catalyst. It just took o a er he got involved.” e Ice Bucket Challenge has now spread worldwide, even to Philadelphia. “Now over 2 billion new donors have donated to this cause who had never donated to ALS before,” said Tony Heyl, the ALS Association Greater Philadelphia Chapter Director of communications and Public Policy. “Over 100 million dollars has been raised {from the Ice Bucket Challenge}.”

Heyl said that the Ice Bucket Challenge will not stop any time soon. He attributed its success to the fact that the challenge can be done anywhere, any-time, with or without people watching. “It’s also a great cause.”

John Frates said that ALS has taught him, Peter and their entire family to be more mindful of people with disabilities. “Until a few years, that’s something we just didn’t think about,” said John Frates. For more information, log onto http://www.alsa.org

Ed Harris as Pollockby Kemal MoiseEd Harris has played in movies like Apollo13. is lm was his directorial debut. Ed Harris is a director, producer and actor playing Jackson Pollock one of the most famous contemporary painters of the cold war period. Marcia Gay Harden played Lee Krasner’s role. Once Jackson Pollock encountered Lee Krasner, she changed his life as an artist. She encourages him to stop drinking and surpass common artists of the period and to look into the European realists ( e European modern focused on the sub conscience mind. ) Marguerite “Peggy” Guggenheim known as Peggy, played by Amy Madigan, gave Jackson Pollock most of the nancial funding to exhibit his art . Ed Harris didn’t know much initially about the character Jackson Pollock. A er he read more about Jackson Pollock’s character in an auto-biography, he brilliantly portrayed his character. Jackson Pollock was the youngest of ve, of a mother that had to play two roles mother and father. Lee Krasner’s role as a mother-like gure in Jackson Pollock’s life made him complete.

(Frida, from pg 2)As a result, she goes to visit Mexican muralist Diego to obtain an expert opinion about her work. Rivera believes that Frida has great skill and a courtship between the two artists quickly begins. Consequently, the two artists marry, but their marriage is lled great passion and turmoil due to Diego’s open a airs. Frida becomes enraged by Diego’s philandering and she quickly realizes that he is not capable of being faithful. us, Frida begins a torrid a air with several men and women; Frida also has a passionate a air with Russian revolutionary Leon Trotsky.

During the course of Frida’s marriage and a airs she began to start most of the treasured self-portraits of our generation. Frida also became an activist and her words of revolution resonated with the masses. Frida’s captivating paintings were infused with vibrant colors; her Mexican culture also greatly in uenced her paintings. A large portion of Frida’s paintings include a symbolic monkey; historically in Mexican culture monkeys are viewed as sensual creatures; however, Frida paintings depicted monkeys as sensitive.

In conclusion, Salma Hayek did an outstanding job in her portrayal of Frida Kahlo; their resemblances were uncanny once I viewed the actual Frida Kahlo. e lm seemed like an exaggeration of Frida’s life; however, the movies biographical depiction was very accurate. I was shocked when Frida came to her art exhibit while she was bed ridden, but in true Frida Kahlo form she was fearless and bold. Frida passed on July 13, 1954 soon a er her 47 birthday; some speculate that her death was the result of an overdose; however, no autopsy was performed. Frida captivated the heart and minds of her countrymen and the world at large; her work is still celebrated today.

(Pollock, from pg 3) ey got married in 1945 and a erwards moved out of New York City to a quite quarter acres near East Hampton. e one scene from the movie that was de nitely inspiring was when he accidently spilled some paint o the canvas on to the oor. He broke o the original style of painting on canvas and started painting o the canvas. is was an undeniable pathway to abstract expressionist faction at the time. Jackson Pollock never gave up on his art reaching the world. As an artist he never stops pushing the envelope about what was fascinating. Once Jackson Pollock got attention or fame, he did not know what and how to control it.

He committed adultery and he drink heavily. Because of his signi cant other, she was able to better his life. Ed Harris’ portrayal of Jackson Pollock was realistic.

In conclusion this is a love movie that I would recommend to friends and family. is movie had its dark parts. e two artists found each other in the arts. I believe that was a romantic touch by Ed Harris for the rst movie he ever directed. Marcia Gay Harden and Amy Madigan also performed very well as co actors and also for giving the movie its depth.

Work to completely modernize SEPTA’s City Hall and 15th Street Stations will continue in phases in the coming years.“We’re excited to see the results from the rst part of the transformation of this vital transit hub into a world-class travel center,” said SEPTA General Manager Joseph M. Casey. “ e City Hall and 15th Street Stations are true cornerstones for mass transit in Philadelphia, and with this project, will continue to be for future generations.”

Highlights of the City Hall Early Action Phase include:

- Elevator access to the 15th Street Stations on the Market-Frankford and Trolley Lines. is includes three elevators installed by SEPTA, two of which connect the upper concourse to both sides of the Market-Frankford Line, and a third connecting the upper concourse to the eastbound Trolley platform. e Center City District will add two more elevators, one from the park area to the fare line level, and another that will operate from the park to the fare line and the westbound Trolley platform.- Two new fare lines equipped for the New Payment Technology fare modernization project.- Architectural nishes, energy e cient lighting, structural repairs and waterproo ng.- Safety and security improvements, such as security cameras and re alarm systems.- Audio/video public address system and new signage, including electronic message boards

e City Hall Early Action Phase work is SEPTA’s rst major step in overhauling this transit hub. Work will continue with additional phases in coming years thanks to funding from Act 89, which was passed by the state Legislature and signed by Gov. Tom Corbett last year to provide a long-term, dedicated source of capital funding for transportation infrastructure improvements across Pennsylvania. With Act 89 in place, SEPTA is moving ahead with a plan entitled “Rebuilding for the Future,” which addresses the system’s most pressing needs while also laying the groundwork for future growth.

SEPTA Launches ‘Dude Its Rude’ Passenger Etiquette CampaignSEPTA Media Press ReleaseSEPTA announced the launch of its new ‘Dude It’s Rude’ passenger etiquette campaign September 9. e new project takes a direct approach in an e ort to get riders thinking about their own personal travel habits.Prior to the Dude It’s Rude campaign, SEPTA tackled the issue of passenger etiquette through campaigns that either addressed general behaviors or speci c areas of concern using a lighter approach with cartoon-like characters. Soon a er, a cellphone use campaign was developed, customers positively responded to the cellphone use program materials which combined humor with direct messaging. Based on that experience, SEPTA decided to take a more direct approach in its revised passenger etiquette campaign thus creating the Dude It’s Rude Program. e new program attempts to reform customer travel habits that have continuously been reported as big problems for speci c service modes including taking your trash with you, watching your language and blocking the front aisle.

Using strong visuals and minimal words, the new campaign purposely takes an edgier tone. SEPTA intentionally did not include its name or logo on decals and posters to get customers thinking more about the messages instead of who is delivering it.“Initial comments from our Customer Service Channels have been positive,” said SEPTA General Manager Joseph Casey. “Customers appreciate our e orts to tackle the issues that bug them such as seat hogging. We will continue to monitor customer and employee comments for feedback.”Dude It’s Rude ads have been appearing at the bottom of SEPTA’s public timetables for the past 12+ months. e launch commemorates expansion of the program to decals, posters and digital messaging on SEPTA vehicles. For more information about SEPTA’s Dude It’s Rude program, visithttp://www.septa.org/service/dudeitsrude/index.html Courtesy: SEPTA.org
