Motivation Letter

I would like to start by saying that getting to a position in the Team of

Official is not about the position itself, but the opportunities that can give you. I

think life is about opportunities, and how we use them.

My name is Raymundo Rojas from Santiago de Chile. I am a third year

medical student, and it is been a while since I started working on the IFMSA,

but I believe this is not important right now, what I do believe it is important, is

what has lead me here, my “motivation”.

It all started long ago; I have always wondered why we are always so

focus in building better streets and better building like if that would lead us to

build a better society. I have always wondered which the ultimate objective of

our society is, and sadly, I never got a good response. The best answer I

managed to get was that we are all looking for “happiness”, but again, what is

the meaning of this?

It was the places I visited, the people I got to know, the amazing people I

got to know, that gave me the best answer for this. I then realized that

happiness comes from inside and not from an awesome house in an awesome

neighborhood. When we find that inner peace, then we start sharing, and I’m

not talking about material stuff, in other words, is then when we start to care

about the person that is next to us.

As simple as a smile can be, as simple as giving a seat to someone else

in a bus, those simple acts makes a better day for someone else. I’m a true

believer that to positive change our society, we need to develop Culture of

Peace. We need to work person by person for this and I can’t do it myself, but

when I start working with an ONG with around 1.2 million people around the

world, it gives me hope, that we can do changes and that our acts has huge

impact.

In the IFMSA I found more people that think this way than anywhere else,

is that why I’m so convinced to put all my energy here and not somewhere else.

Last year I worked as SCORP Development Assistant for NMOs and I

realized that to keep working and growing as a Committee we need to develop

better and stronger bounds with externals. I want to use what I have learned to

create more and better opportunities for SCORPions.

I am highly motivated to create a bridge between medical student’s

around the world and the organizations that are willing to help us.

By the other hand, IFMSA has given me one huge motivation to be and

to keep being a medical student, giving me a sense on the things I think, I feel

and I do. I want to keep getting involved with this organization that it has given

me a lot and that I have the feeling that I can still give a lot.

Now that I think about it, the only thing you need to know about me right

now is that is this motivation what has lead me to write this letter and what is

going to push me in anything, and I’m going to put this motivation into my duties

as Liaison Officer for SCORP if elected.

Thank you very much for your time.

Plan of Action

I would like to start by saying that this plan of action is only an initial

version of what would be at the end. Last period I worked as SCORP

Development Assistant for NMOs which gave me a vision of how SCORP is

working right now at international level; for this reason, there are many point I

would like to improve but also there are many points I know that need to be

restructure.

My Plan of Action would focus on 5 main points:

1. Initial Evaluation.

2. Reinforce relationships between SCORP and current externals.

3. Get new opportunities and new externals working with SCORP.

4. Reinforce relationships between SCORPion and externals.

5. Ensure continuity.

1. Initial Evaluation

This point is fundamental in order to create the final Plan of Action with due

dates and concrete objectives.

In collaboration with the last SCORP Director (Fares Al-Fares), last SCORP LO

(Nassima Dzair) and the new elected SCORP Director, get the strong and weak

points of SCORP and precise what role should externals have. In addition to

this, a survey would be sent to the server asking SCORPions their opinion on

different matters concerning SCORP & Externals.

The main objective of this initial evaluation is to get an overview of how is

SCORP situated with the different externals, and with this, create a database

with concrete and updated information. This database should have information

about each external, with information about the organization, opportunities

related with, a record of the communications set with them, main region they

work on, etc.

Also, with the information about the weak points of the Committee, create new

objectives in order to improve this.

2. Reinforce relationships between SCORP and current externals.

As a new Liaison Officer would take charge of the communications, it is

going to be essential to start with the basics: introducing the new team. New

documents would be created in order to present SCORP to the different

organizations, show them our current work and encourage them to reinforce

communications during the term. These documents would include presentation

letters, project’s bulletin, information about the IFMSA and the influence we

have worldwide and others.

For the main partner organizations working with us an online meeting

could be necessary too.

Also, I believe it is necessary to create a periodical way to keep informed

externals about our work. I want to implement a bulletin that would be send via

online every three month, updating about our projects, meetings, big IFMSA’s

related news, etc. This would be complemented with a monthly survey sent to

the server where each SCORPion would have the possibility to ask for support

or just to inform about their current projects.

3. Get new opportunities and new externals working with SCORP.

With the outcome of the initial evaluation and the new plan of action on

work, we could target new externals that could help SCORP in a international,

regional and national level. This is a point that is going to be developed after the

initial evaluation.

4. Reinforce relationships between SCORPion and externals.

Right now, SCORPions cannot see the actual work with externals

except for their presence in the different meetings and for some specific

projects or international days. That is why I think we need to develop a system

where SCORPions can access to communicate with externals when they need

to. With a simple form sent to the server, SCORPions could indicate if they

need the support of any specific external or just look if we could find some

external that can help them in their activity. With this, we could also track down

the activities done by SCORPions around the world, giving us more

updated information about the projects and activities done in the different

countries. This form would be sent in the first week of each month and the

contact with externals would be done within that month. We can’t ensure that

every activity will get support but I really think this could improve our

relationship between SCORPions and externals.

5. Ensure continuity.

The database would be a great tool to give a correct handover and

updated information to the next Liaison Officer. I think that this point is essential

to grow as committee and the relationship with externals.

As I mention before, this is only an initial plan that would change with the initial

evaluation and the situations that comes during the term.
