International Baccalaureate High School Diploma Programme Track

This program provides a comprehensive education to prepare students for top uni-versity study. The IB High School Diploma Programme has an interdisciplinary, global curriculum which begins in the junior year. Quarry Lane is currently the only private high school in the East Bay Area to offer this prestigious diploma, which is con-sidered the gold standard for university admission.

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme was founded in 1965 to provide a rigorous, well-rounded education for stu-dents throughout the world so they would qualify for university study no matter where they pursued their high school education. The IB Diploma Programme, therefore, has a common, broadly-based curriculum. The students are assessed by internationally developed and graded examinations that are both oral and written.

The IB Diploma Programme is unique in that it provides a liberal arts, interdisciplin-ary education leading to a diploma, which is recognized throughout the world. Students pursue studies in English, foreign language, experimental sciences, mathematics, social studies and elective courses. Teachers pro-vide interdisciplinary instruction, whereby students study common processes, themes and materials within and across the subject areas.

The curriculum is based on the top-ics and goals identified by the curriculum board of the International Baccalaureate Office in Cardiff, Wales. The purpose of

Our passionate High School community inspires and engages students and teachers alike. Top notch academics are the core of Quarry Lane’s program. We are proud to offer three unique academic tracks in our high school: • International Baccalaureate (IB) High School Diploma Programme Track (Gold Standard for college admission)• Science, Engineering and Technology Track • College Preparatory Track

the International Baccalaureate Organi-zation is to educate young people to act intelligently and responsibly in a complex global society. Through the high quality of its curriculum and assessment, the IB pro-gram seeks to ensure knowledge of tra-ditional academic disciplines and of the individual’s own heritage, while fostering inquisitiveness and openness to new ideas. Participation in the IB program will equip students with a genuine understanding of themselves and of others, heightening the capacity for tolerance and engender-ing respect for different points of view.

Science, Engineering and Technology Track

We have developed a challenging sci-ence, engineering and technology track at The Quarry Lane School for high school students who want to focus on these areas as a future career. Our applied sciences curriculum models a real-world design and research engineering lab, which sup-ports students’ empirical and theoretical research projects. These projects create opportunities for students to work along-side industry professionals at top universi-ties and research labs. This track is not only focused on academics, but also challenges students to solve real-world problems using the disciplines of science and engineering.

Students wishing to enter this track need to have completed Algebra 2 in middle school so they are able to take both physics and chemistry during their freshman year in high school. These students will study biology during their sophomore year and can take AP Biology and/or AP Chemis-

try during their junior year. During their senior year, students may take AP Physics and an advanced third year of chemistry. Students will also enroll in elective courses during their four years in this track, which include robotics, computer programming, AP Statistics and Economics. This track is not only focused on academics but also seeks to challenge students to solve real-world problems using the disciplines of science and engineering. Hence, they will also enroll in Applied Sciences, where they will invent, learn computer-aided design (using Solid Works) and build prototypes.

College Preparatory TrackThis curriculum is designed to prepare

graduates for the academic challenges of higher education. With high expectations for all students, our graduation require-ments ensure a comprehensive educa-tional foundation and meet, or surpass, the admissions standards of public and private universities across the country. We offer a variety of advanced placement (AP) classes which allow our students to earn university credits before they graduate from high school.

Most students are motivated to exceed the university requirements and go above and beyond in the areas of math, science and foreign language courses in addi-tion to enrolling in academic electives in history, mathematics and the arts. With the intent to offer inspiring and engaging courses that adhere to our rigorous stan-dards, we will enhance our curriculum an-nually with innovative courses that reflect teachers’ expertise and students’ interest.
