Designed for those who have taken the Introduction Course OR those who know the basics of bonsai and wish to study bonsai design and learn the advanced techniques needed to achieve better results. This course will be divided into two-ten week sessions to meet in early spring, spring and summer to insure the best times to work on the trees. You may take either a Wednesday or a Saturday course. It will offer the student a study group atmosphere in which each student will be taught the knowledge and skills to take his or her bonsai to a much higher level. The course will cover in great detail: The art and aesthetics of bonsai & Harmony in bonsai Detailed development and aesthetics of these styles (the student will have the opportunity to create bonsai in each of the styles listed if they wish): formal upright, informal upright, slanting style, broom style, semi cascade style, cascade style, two-tree/twin trunk styles, forest style, raft style, shohin/mame style, literati style, driftwood style, weeping style, exposed root style Sources of bonsai material How to collect material How to buy Methods of propagation Refining bonsai Displaying Bonsai DETAILS: The course will meet for 20 sessions. There are 2 classes. One from 10 to noon on Saturdays one from 6:30 to 8:30 PM on Wednesdays. You may register for either time period. Wednesday classes will start March 2. Saturday classes will start April 2. Some weeks will be skipped due to Pauline’s travel teaching schedule and studio events. We will meet for 2 hours minimum each session. During the course, each person will create as many of the styles as they wish to construct. The material may be brought in by the students or purchased at the studio. There will be additional optional free workshops on weekends for practice. (There will of course be a fee for materials used, if any.) The course is $250 plus tax per 10 weeks for a total of $500 plus tax for the complete 20 weeks and may be paid at the start or $25 per session. The text will be provided for all students. Additional costs: trees, wire, pots, soil as selected by the student. Students at this level are expected to have their own tools and wire. These may be purchased at the studio. Students may use some the studio’s specialized tools beyond their own basic tools.
