It has been an eventful first term for boys basketball in the ISK. The u19 team have competed in the cup competition for the first time. We had a great win away from home in the first round against the Bish from Galway. We then hosted the reigning cup champions (which were littered with Irish internationals) St. Aidans CBS of Dublin. After a slow start we got to grips with their physicality and speed and quickly found our own rhythm. In a pulsating contest our lads dug deep throughout the game and the lead swapped hands on numerous occasions. Unfortunately time went against us, as a shot just on the buzzer was deemed a half second too late and st.aidans went through on a scoreline of 94-92. Credit to the spirit of the ISK as we were 2 years younger than our experienced opponents. It bodes well for us in the future. As part of Active School Week, a group of first and second years spent a morning at Pony Tales Stables. The students enjoyed group lessons, catering for all abilities from beginners to advanced, and learnt all about stable management. Many thanks to Tim and the team at Pony Tales for such a fun learning experience. The Green Schools Committee is striving to win a second Green Flag for the ISK with the primary focus being on Energy. Initiatives undertaken this year have included an audit on the amount of electricity used by teachers and students during class as well as the Pedal Energy day which was held in conjunction with Active School week. The Green Schools Committee are delighted to announce James Doyle 5th year as the new Green Schools Officer. The committee would also like to thank Astellas for their continued support. We had a fantastic breakfast morning this year in aid of Childline. Wonderful to see everyone supporting such a great cause. We will be having a guest speaker down to talk about the work of Childline this December. Turas chuig an Triail “An rud is annamh is iontach” Chuaigh daltaí Ardteiste go Corcaigh le déanaí chun an drama cáiliúil ‘An Triail’ a fheiceáil san amharclann ‘The Everyman’. Ní miste a rá gur bhain siad an-taitneamh go deo as. Bhí an léiriú ar fheabhas agus bhí caighdeán na haisteoireachta sár- mhaith. Dráma an-chonspóideach ab ea ábhar an drama nuair a céadléiríodh é san amharclann ‘Damer’ sa bhliain 1964. Tá an dráma tragóideach seo bunaithe ar chailín óg, Máire Ní Chathasaigh a d’éirigh torrach de bharr an chaidrimh a bhí aici le fear pósta. Ag deireadh an dráma maraíonn sí a leanbh agus cuireann sí lámh ina bás féin. Tríd an drama scrúdaíonn an t-údar Máiréad Ní Ghráda an dearcadh mícharthanach, míthrócaireach a bhí ag daoine i leith chailíní torracha neamhphósta. The school’s first Active School Week ran from October 24th to 28th 2016. The aim of this initiative was to increase awareness of the importance of regular physical activity and to encourage participation in all types of activities among all members of the school community. A programme of events was planned which aimed to provide something for everybody and, physical activity found its way into many different subjects during the week. Among the many activities organised were: a teacher versus students basketball match; céilí; set dancing; horse riding; dance flash mob; poc fada competition; active warm-up; novelty races; physical activity as homework; circuit training; Pedal Energy session (in conjunction with the Green School), and, of course, the annual School Fun Run. We also welcomed back past-student Seán O’Sullivan who spoke to Leaving Cert students about the importance of physical activity. At the weekend, the junior tour also provided many opportunities for swimming, bowling and climbing. Without doubt, the school was a hive of activity during this very successful week!

Our first year boys’ and girls’ teams entered the FAI Futsal competition, hosted in the sports complex in Killorglin. The girls entered two teams and finished second in our group so unfortunately ending aspirations for a 3 in a row. The girls were excellent throughout the competition and were unlucky in their head-to-head competitions to lose to the eventual winners Kenmare. The boys fared better after winning their group including a very good 3-1 win over Mounthawk who have regularly won this competition over the last 10 years. The semi-final against the Green proved to be a cagey affair but the much worked-on defensive structures of the team ensured an ISK clean sheet and the only goal of the game proved to be enough for a fantastic 1 nil victory. Lastly, defeating Kenmare in the final ensured the trophy returned to the ISK for the third time in recent history. FAI development office Darren Ahern was fulsome in his praise for the standard of soccer displayed by the lads and the fruits of the good work done by the local clubs were evident throughout the day. The Munster finals await. Soccer has made a welcome return to the school with a first year team, who are currently training ahead of their first Munster match, and a senior team who recently defeated local rivals the St. Brendan’s College in their group stage.

Congratulations to Cadhla Piggot and Orlaith Reynolds of 4th year who qualified for the finals of the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition taking place in the RDS Dublin from Jan 11th - 14th. The title of their project is "An Investigation Into The Effect The Lunar Cycle Has On Students". A total of 2091 projects entered the competition with only 550 getting through to the final. The girls will be competing in the senior category of Social and Behavioural Sciences. Best of luck to both girls and their teacher Sheree Murphy.Based on her outstanding Junior Cert results in Science and Maths, Laura Hayes has been selected to take part in the Junior Science Olympiad. Mark Lynch and Niamh Fenton Toms have also been selected to participate in the Senior Science Olympiad based on their great performance in last years Junior Olympiad. Well done to all.Science will come to life in the school in the coming weeks as the Science Department have been busy planning various events in conjunction with Science Week (Nov 14-Nov 20). Planned events include a Science Quiz for 1st years, Science

It has been a busy term as regards music. Students from first year up have been involved in performing for the School Mass, class recitals and Friday recitals in the Well. Second and fourth year music students had a very enjoyable trip to Siamsa Tire in Tralee to see a wonderful production of Phantom of the Opera. The title role was played by past pupil Eoin Foran and Caoimhe Doyle, a fourth year student, was cast as Meg. Both Eoin and Caoimhe showed great musical talent and stage presence in their performances.

In October, two classes went on their CSPE field trip as part of their action projects. Class 3D1 visited the Donkey Sanctuary in Liscarroll, Co Cork. The students in this class raised enough money to adopt six donkeys. Class 3C1 visited Dublin Zoo where they learned about the care and attention given to the Western Lowland Gorillas that inhabit the zoo. Both classes enjoyed their day out and lots of thanks was given to the staff in the Donkey Sanctuary and Zoo for their great help.

Our senior boys got through to the O'Sullivan Shield Final defeating Pobalscoil Sliabh Luachra in the semi final. The final took place in Fitzgerald Stadium, Killarney and our opponents were a fancied Tralee CBS outfit. From the throw-in to the final whistle every ISK player showed great desire, determination and no little skill while putting 'The Green' to the sword on a scoreline of 3-14 to 1-13.Our Corn Uí Mhuirí campaign began on the 19th of October and saw us defeated by St. Brendan's in what was a disappointing outing but the confidence gained from our O'Sullivan Shield victory means the players are relishing the challenge of our 2 upcoming group games against DLS, Macroom and Hamilton High, Bandon. Our U15 boys competed in the Munster 15 A Corn an Bhráthair Cholim Taft on the 12th October. They travelled to Ballyvourney to play St Francis College Rochestown. We got off to a slow start and found ourselves10 points down at half time. Our boys rallied very well in the 2nd half and gave a very fine display of attacking football to bring us to within 3 points by the full time whistle. This was the first taste of colleges A football for most of our lads and will stand very well to them for the Russell Cup in the New Year. The first year footballers are training hard and recently won the Shield Competition in the Sem Blitz so bright futures lie ahead.

LADIES FOOTBALLThe 2016/17 season has gotten off to a busy start. The school is competing in A competition for the first time in nearly a decade. The Senior team travelled to Abbeyfeale to take on St. John the Baptist, and although their opponents were stronger the girls gave a good account of themselves just coming up short in the end. The development team played three group games against Miltown, Mounthawk and Kenmare. This was a great chance to give the first and second years a taste of Munster action. They progress to the quarter finals after Mid Term. The Junior A team got their campaign of to a strong start with a very comprehensive win over Christ the King in the first round, and are due to play Fermoy early in the new term, hoping to emulate last year’s All Ireland success.

PLOUGHING CHAMPIONSHIPSThe Agricultural Science department organised a trip for our Ag Sc students to the Ploughing Championships in Screggan Co. Offaly on the 22nd September. Over 50 students travelled and the trip was a great success.Despite the early start and the late return, all students really enjoyed the trip and were a credit to their school on the day. Due to the success of this trip we hope to organize a return trip in the future. The highlight was when Mr O'Regan found the world’s most powerful tractor.

INTERNET SAFETYIn October, we welcomed Jason O'Mahony & Dr Maureen Griffin to speak to students, parents and staff about internet safety. Both presentations were very informative and provided plenty of food for thought and advice on this very important topic.

magic show, Spectroscopy in a suitcase, as well as trips to the Chemistry labs in Astellas and the Biology labs in REMEDI (NUIG) Galway. Leaving certs will represent the school in the annual Irish Science Teachers Association Science Quiz.Construction continues on the new Science Wing with work to be completed by next September. Exciting times ahead……watch this space.

Rugby will be up and running in November with the seniors hoping to repeat last year's trophy winning season and the juniors competing in Munster competitions also. First years will also play in the Emerging Schools Initiative before and after Christmas

Our annual 'Fun Run' was centre stage this term and proved to be a most enjoyable event as students and teachers alike took to the roads in an effort to promote active living while raising funds for the vast array of extra curricular activities on offer in the school. Thanks to Seán O’Sullivan for speaking to students and to our sponsors for their generous donations. Well done to all who took part.
