Initial data collection

1. Subjective work sheet2. Game analysis observation

schedule3. Video analysis

4. It is important to be able to describe this process and why methods are valid and reliable.

Page 3: Intermediate 2 PE Structures and Strategies – Volleyball

Subjective worksheetO 2 sets against opponents of equal

ability (4-aside)O At the end of the sets our team sat

down and discussed our performance under three main headings

O Service receptionO Transition to attack and attack playO Court coverage and defenceO Here we wrote down our strengths

and weaknesses in each area.

Game analysis osO This schedule highlighted the main

ways points could be won in volleyball

O Whilst I played 2 sets against opponent of equal ability an observer sat and marked down each time a point was won with an X in the appropriate category.

Page 6: Intermediate 2 PE Structures and Strategies – Volleyball

What were these categories?

O ServiceO Opponent errorO BlockO 1st attackO Transition to attack O Opponent service

Appropriate and reliable

O Subjective data collection allowed our team to reflect on our own game play however not concrete evidence and based on own interpretation

O GAOS identified strengths and weaknesses in individuals and units in the game reinforcing subjective data collection

O Written evidence which could be looked at time and time again

O Could be converted to statistics hard to argue with

O Objective feedback more reliable non biasO Game duration gave enough informationO Opposition provided a realistic settingO Video analysis reinforced GAOS plus could be

slowed down or paused to look in more detail at specific aspects of play. Good for comparison

What are your teams main strengths?

O 2 tall powerful hittersO Can adjust run up at the last minute to

change direction of hitO Fast explosive arm action getting over the

ball to bring it down quickO Frequently change the tempo of the game

by using both tips and spikes to pressurise opposition defence making attacking play less predictable

O Tactically aware of opposition weaknesses targeting these players with the attacking ball.

O Able to time run and move in as a unit playing fake hits to add an element of surprise

O Read game and can target unprotected space

Page 10: Intermediate 2 PE Structures and Strategies – Volleyball

What is your main weakness when applying the 1.2.1

structure?O Weak receiver (impact on 1st attack, what is wrong with 1st touch?)

O What do opposition do?O What are the players technical

limitations and impact on skill?O What are the physical limitations

and impact on skill?O What are the tactical limitations

and impact on skill?O How is the setter affected?O How are the swing hitters

affected?

Service reception Observation Schedule

Played 2 sets against an opponent of equal ability (up to 25 points)

O Observer recorded each players’ service receptionO 3 = perfect pass, high and accurate to the setterO 2 = setter options limitedO 1 = setter has no optionsO 0 = direct error

O An x was also placed on a scatter graph to demonstrate where the first touch was played to and whether it was high or low

Page 12: Intermediate 2 PE Structures and Strategies – Volleyball

What is your main weakness when applying

the 3 touch attacking strategy. O Several players ineffective in the

setting roleO Technical weaknessesO Tactical weaknessesO Physical weaknessesO Impact on hittersO Overall impact

Why appropriate and reliable?

O By using focussed data collection and video analysis you are able to identify where the structure or strategy is falling down.

O Gives you a visual picture of your faultsO Identifies if one player is able to fulfil their role

due to TTP limitations.O Collecting data prevents you practicing to

improve the wrong aspect of the game firmly focussing on weaknesses

O Identifies if all players understand their roles and responsibilities

O When in pressurised situations, most players skills’ break down therefore it is important to collect data in this situation

O Acts as a method of monitoring
