James Paterson: The Old Stone Bridge

I was really drawn to this little painting by James Paterson, one of the leading members of the Glasgow Boy Group.Famous for his atmospheric watercolour studies, this work islikely to depict a scene near his favourite corner of Scotland,Moniaive in Dumfriesshire. Showing twilight falling on theriver, it exudes a quiet, restful quality. Though quite a smallpainting it has real wall power – the light is so beautifullyexecuted that it glows despite the muted palette. Its smallscale also makes it perfect for hanging anywhere around thehome.

This month we have teamed up with Edinburgh-based interior designer Siobhan Mooney for our‘Specialist’s Choice’. Siobhan’s passion for period property with a contemporary twist reveals howthe antique and the modern can work in total harmony, so it made perfect sense to let her loose inLyon & Turnbull to inspire us all! By clever placement of pieces in a refurbished Georgiantownhouse, Siobhan shows how items from our July sale can work in any home. Here are some ofher favourite pieces from our shoot.

Specialist’s Choicewith Siobhan Mooney, Interior Design

Rock Crystal Ball

The rock crystal ball worked well in the bedroom,as it would in most neutral spaces. It’s decorativeand interesting but in a rather modest way.Despite the fact it is relatively colourless itbecomes a source of fascination when viewed inthe light as its many reflective inclusions create arainbow effect. This, combined with its ratherpleasing spherical shape and smooth finish makesit really rather beautiful. It’s also incredibly heavyand relatively big, so it has multi-functional roles;as well as decorating a table top you could use itas a door stop … or to perfect your clairvoyanceskills, of course!

Tortoiseshell Tea Caddy

The tortoiseshell tea caddy is also something whichstood out when working on our photo shoot. It’s neatsize and bombe shaped body appeal to me, and itlooked handsome when placed next to other similarobjects. Its ability to be of age yet not aged is also ofnote: it truly is an antique piece that still looks smartand elegant when situated in a more modernsurrounding, for which it can be commended! This ispartially due to the rich colours of the veneer that arestill bright. In particular, the mustard-like tones in thetortoiseshell were picked up by the other objects in theroom, most notably the leather chair and the yellowhues in the painting.

Pair of OverpaintedOpen Armchairs

The chair shown in the bedroom shot was oneof the first pieces I was drawn to when viewingitems in the July Interiors sale, because it wasso well suited to the chosen interior. Thewhite upholstery and distressed creampaintwork certainly complement the taupewalls, light carpet and soft furnishings of theroom. It also seems perfect as a piece for abedroom due to its neat size and femininerefurbishment. Very popular at present aresimilar shabby chic styled items, which reworkolder pieces and farmhouse-like furniture forthe home. In this way the pair of chairs arevery on-trend and contemporary to thefashions and desires of the 21st century.

A Selection of Fans from aPrivate Scottish CollectorFor millennia people have used fans not just to circulate the air, protectfrom the sun and hide blushes, but as status symbols and ceremonialtools. Excavations of the tomb of Tutankhamen in Egypt revealedstunning pieces of intricate gold work and ostrich feathers, eloquently expressing the power and influence of the holder.Prehistoric bamboo examples have also been discovered inChina, a society where the fan played a continually, significant role in the demonstration of societal rank overthe centuries.

The different materials, sizes, and forms - from palmleaves to the finest ivory and gold - have made the fan avery interesting and commodious object, one that wasbound to capture the gaze of the collector. The first fans wereof a fixed type, developing later in the 17th century into the foldingfans we know today. Initially introduced to the European aristocracy from the Asiancolonies, fans of the finest materials were an item of luxury. Moving into the 18th centuryfans were manufactured on a larger scale allowing for more affordable pieces to becomeavailable to an extensive audience. During the 19th century, Impressionist artists began toharness the potential of the fan hand-painting the leaves with landscape and allegoricalscenes.

This sale includes an impressive and varied selection of fans from the property of a Scottishcollector. This interesting assortment gathers Spanish, French, Dutch, Italian, English andScottish fans, variously hand painted on silk and paper, and mounted with bone, mother ofpearl and ivory.

This characterful portrait depicts James Nisbet, a member of thefamous Admiral Thomas Cochrane’s expedition to Chile in 1819.

Cochrane, the 10th Earl of Dundonald, 1st Marquess of Maranhão,(14 December 1775-31 October 1860), was a Scottish naval flagofficer of the Royal Navy and a radical politician. Though hissuccess during the Napoleonic Wars brought him fame, the Frenchnicknaming him Le Loup des Mers ('The Sea Wolf'), he wasdismissed from the Royal Navy in 1814 following a conviction forfraud. He then served in the rebel navies of Chile, Brazil andGreece during their respective wars of independence. He waseventually pardoned and upon his death was granted the title ofRear-Admiral of the United Kingdom. The adventurous Cochrane iswidely regarded as the inspiration behind C. S. Forester's HoratioHornblower and Patrick O'Brian's Jack Aubrey.

James Nisbet Charles is no less interesting a character. Hereceives mentions in the standard Cochrane biographies, mostfrequently in Brian Vale’s Cochrane in the Pacific. He commandedthe marines at Pisco, under overall command of the naval forceunder Captain Guise – one of Cochrane’s captains. He was buriedat Valparaiso and his death was noted by Cochrane in his South
