Sunday

July 31st:

Associate

Ministers,

Sibyl Lundy,

Linda Stern,

and David

Heitmiller,

have chosen

to develop

worship

services

together in

months with

a fifth

Sunday.

Those dates in 2016 will be: Jan. 31, May 29, July 31, and Oct. 30.

Sunday July 10th we continue exploring Spiritual Permaculture:

Coming into Deeper Relationship with Earth by focusing on the 7th

principle, Design from patterns to details: By stepping back,

we can observe patterns in nature and society. These can form the

backbone of our designs, with the details filled in as we go.

The Universal Worship recognizes that all religions originate

in the same Truth. All of the great teachers and prophets have

reflected this truth to humanity in their own way. The same power

that inspired them continues to move through and guide our own

lives. Through communal prayer, meditation, and practice we engage

with the power and energy of this continuous revelation, becoming a

radiant vessel of light and truth for the benefit of all beings.

Cherags Michael Douglas, Karen Lindquist, Sally Jo Gilbert de Vargas offer

the Universal Worship service on second Sundays.

Sunday July 24th: “A Service of

Devotion to Our Lady Sophia”

A particular position of honor and

importance is expressed within the

Ecclesia Gnostica tradition to the

feminine emanation of the original and

transcendental spiritual unity whose

name is Sophia (Wisdom). She was

involved in the creation of the world

and ever since remained the guide of

her orphaned human children.

For this worship service, Rev. Karen

Lindquist has invited Rev. Andrea

Turner, priest of the Hagia Sophia

Gnostic Church (a parish of the Eccle-

sia Gnostica) to share a unique and

deeply meaningful ritual honoring the

most Holy Sophia.

Our Spiritual Discernment for 2016

Spiritual Permaculture: Coming into

Deeper Relationship with Earth

JULY 2016

Interfaith Community Sanctuary

1763 NW 62nd Street

Seattle, WA 98107

www.interfaithcommunitysanctuary.org

Our spiritual discernment for 2016 will

be the twelve principles of permaculture.

These principles are primarily guidelines

for designing functional, sustainable

agricultural systems. However, as a

distillation of the way nature works, they

are applicable across a wide range of

activities: social, creative, economic, and

spiritual. Our hope is that focusing on

these basic tenets will help us connect

these different aspects of our lives, and

see how the same wisdom of balance and

harmony works in all of them.

By placing our spiritual practice in a holistic, ecological frame-

work, we can work against the tendency in our culture to men-

tally separate ourselves from nature, and develop deeper con-

nection with the natural processes that sustain and nurture us.

Our primary spiritual duty in this time is to reconnect with the

spirit of the planet that creates and supports us. We can use

these principles as a way of coming into deeper relationship

with this Earth, who is both our responsibility and the deepest

level of our selves.

(from Wikipedia) The three core tenets of permaculture are:

• Care for the earth: Provision for all life systems to contin-

ue and multiply. This is the first principle, because without a

healthy earth, humans cannot flourish.

• Care for the people: Provision for people to access those

resources necessary for their existence.

Return of surplus: Reinvesting surpluses back into the

system to provide for the first two ethics. This includes

returning waste back into the system to recycle into useful-

ness. The third ethic is sometimes referred to as “Fair

Share” to reflect that each of us should take no more than

what we need before we reinvest the surplus.

Twelve

Permaculture

design principles (articulated by David

Holmgren in his book

Permaculture: Principles

and Pathways Beyond

Sustainability):

1. Observe and interact: By taking time to engage with

nature we can design solutions that suit our particular

situation. (JANUARY)

2. Catch and store energy: By developing systems that col-

lect resources at peak abundance, we can use them in times of

need. (FEBRUARY)

3. Obtain a yield: Ensure that you are getting truly useful

rewards as part of the work that you are doing. (MARCH)

4. Apply self-regulation and accept feedback: We need

to discourage inappropriate activity to ensure that systems can

continue to function well. (APRIL)

5. Use and value renewable resources and services:

Make the best use of nature's abundance to reduce our con-

sumptive behavior and dependence on non-renewable re-

sources. (MAY)

6. Produce no waste: By valuing and making use of all the

resources that are available to us, nothing goes to waste. (JUNE)

7. Design from patterns to details: By stepping back, we

can observe patterns in nature and society. These can form the

backbone of our designs, with the details filled in as we go. (JULY)

8. Integrate rather than segregate: By putting the right

things in the right place, relationships develop between those

things and they work together to support each other. (AUGUST)

9. Use small and slow solutions: Small and slow systems

are easier to maintain than big ones, making better use of local

resources and producing more sustainable outcomes. (SEPTEMBER)

10. Use and value diversity: Diversity reduces vulnerabil-

ity to a variety of threats and takes advantage of the unique

nature of the environment in which it resides. (OCTOBER)

11. Use edges and value the marginal: The interface be-

tween things is where the most interesting events take place.

These are often the most valuable, diverse and productive ele-

ments in the system. (NOVEMBER)

12. Creatively use and respond to change: We can have a

positive impact on inevitable change by carefully observing,

and then intervening at the right time. (DECEMBER)
