ARBOR DAYCan you imagine our world without trees?

Arbor Day originated in 1872 in the United States territory of Nebraska. Mr. J. Sterling Morton, a newcomer to

the treeless plains of Nebraska, was a keen proponent of the beauty and benefit of trees. He persuaded the

local agricultural board to set aside a day for planting trees and through his position as editor of Nebraska's

first newspaper, encouraged participation in the event by publishing articles on the value of trees for soil

protection, fruit, shade and building. Mr. Morton's home, known as Arbor Lodge, was a testament to his love

for trees and so inspired the name of the holiday; Arbor Day. Within two decades Arbor Day was celebrated in

every US State and territory, and eventually spread around the world. The tradition continues annually in the

second week of August, in global acknowledgment of Mr. Morton's slogan, "other holidays repose upon the

past; Arbor Day proposes for the future."

In South Africa, Arbor Day was first celebrated in 1983. The event captured the imagination of people who

recognized the need for raising awareness of the value of trees in our society. As sources of building material,

food, medicine, and simple scenic beauty, trees play a vital role in the health and well-being of our

communities. Collective enthusiasm for the importance of this issue in South Africa inspired the national

government, in 1999, to extend the celebration of Arbor Day to National Arbor Week. From 1 to 7 September

every year, schools, businesses and organizations are encouraged to participate in community "greening"

events to improve the health and beauty of the local environment and propose a green future for South Africa.

Our Chairman, Mr Pierre Lombard, pictured above, planted a tree in the spirit of Arbor Day for the Centurion

Residential Estate & Country Club. The 2009 Tree of the Year is tree number 166 – Acacia Galpinii

(Apiesdoring / Monkey Thorn).

1time Airline announces its newest addition to the 1time family – 1time holidays.co.za. This tour operator arm of the company was launched on 09 July 2009, from the new Cape Town based office situated in Blaauwberg. 1time Holidays is an additional service of-fered by the airline to its passengers. The tour operator business is promoting the destinations to which 1time flies, particularly Zanzi-bar and launched with “Amazzzzing Holiday Deals to Zanzibar” for September to November.

1time are using a programme called Sell-It Inventory Manager to load and manage hotel contracts, car rental agreements and other ground products. Business rules set up inside Inventory Manager determine how these ground products can be combined with 1time flights to generate the 1time Holidays offers.

The system provides 1time with the ability to create fixed and dynamic holiday packages consisting of hotel and other ground products combined with 1time’s own flights and integrates directly with 1time’s flight reservation system for access to real-time flight availability within the travel package offering, including pricing and booking. The advanced back end system, allows fast, easy and inter-active booking process to take place.

Desmond O’Connor, Commercial Director at 1time says, “1time has grown dramatically in the last 5 years in the South African mar-ket place carrying over 1.6 million passengers in 2008. A lot of our success has come from streamlined and efficient internet booking systems, and it was vital that any system we added was cost effec-tive, reliable, efficient, and more importantly, offered ease of use to our customers which is crucial to our predominantly online busi-ness.

The majority of 1time Holidays’ business will be driven through the Internet and there is also a small call centre taking phone bookings.

When it comes to holiday destinations, you can’t beat South Africa or the continent that it’s on. It’s beautiful. It’s affordable. And it really is a world in one continent. There are so many places here that look just like well-known and much loved places found in other parts of the world. The quaint wine region of Franschhoek in the western Cape, for example, could easily pass for the quaint wine re-gion of Provence in the south of France. Jeffrey’s Bay is like our very own Bondi Beach, and Durban’s surf could easily pass for Queens-land Australia. And parts of George look so much like Ireland you’d be hard pressed to tell them apart. Zanzibar is more idyllic than the Bahamas and only 3.5 hours away.

So why spend a fortune travelling overseas, when you can ex-plore the beautiful world of our very own continent, thanks to 1time Holidays and its fantastic package deals. Why would you go anywhere else? In true 1time spirit, the more nice less price packages are all inclusive, unless clearly stated. There are packages available in and around South Africa, Zanzibar, and soon, Livingstone in Zambia. 1time Airline is the flight partner for these cost effective packages partnering with various hotels, bed and breakfasts, lodges and car rental companies, making your holiday a breakaway, rather than a break the bank getaway.

“In line with 1time’s latest campaign – it’s cheaper to do it your-self.” says Alice Carreira – General Manager of 1time holidays. “Why spend your money on commissions and service fees when you can book direct at 1timeholidays.co.za yourself. Explore your own country, it is beautiful and not as expensive as you think.”

Visit www.1timeholidays.co.za for more , or phone 0861 111 345 to make an enquiry

Regarding carts, please be reminded that besides it being totally unnecessary, no carts under any circumstances are allowed on the mashie course.

The annual awards dinner went off very well and the proud re-cipients don the pages of this edition. Be sure to enjoy and appreci-ate the excellent standard of our golf and club while poring over the pictures. Sincere congratulations to all the deserving recipients of the various awards, including the Juniors who cleaned up very well for the occasion! Thank you all.

Last month the Interface proudly boasted Konrad Zastrau’s fourth hole in one but would you believe, while the month has sped by he has managed to notch a fifth! The first hole in one was in George, second and third right here on # 17, the fourth at Malelane and the fifth at no less than Royal Johannesburg! What a mean feat for this enthusiastic personality who is one of us. Well done Konrad, we’re proud of you. Keep raking them in!

The Captains Invitational has been set for Sunday, 25 October 2009 and we are looking forward to a great day shared by 44 en-thusiastic golfers who board a coach, like a school field trip, for a great day of golf and ‘samesyn’. A fitting trophy donated by the Piagalis Family gives this day an element of being special so many thanks to Lefty and Janet for this generous contribution. We look forward to another successful day together like the last one enjoyed at Elements in 2008.

So there’s that to look forward to amongst many other things happening on the Estate so please partake wherever you can. For instance the great Pub and Grub evenings every Friday night in the new members bar offers an affordable opportunity for relaxed fam-ily time, singles to mingle or a quiet take out for at home if that’s what you prefer. Just another great initiative: on a great estate: that could do with our great support. Hope to see you there soon!

Barry Robinson

Once again the handicap league has done us proud. The guys final-ised who’s who by beating Cullinan 3 to 1 in the final, at Services this past Sunday, 16 August 2009. Well done on an awesome season of commitment, camaraderie and great golf by all and looking forward to much of the same next year!

Today, Tuesday, 18 August 2009, there are many Telkom PGA flags and banners blowing in the wind and what a privilege to once again welcome the Sunshine circuit and the prestigious Telkom PGA to our own course. You just have to be proud to be a part of all of this!

Proud also because, despite the yellow fairways, the greens appear like an oasis and are in excellent condition. This is all due to good maintenance and an effort on your behalf to repair pitch marks, yours and others, as you find them. The ‘Adopt a Green’ drive will once again come into full play so please continue to cooperate with the Pro Shop when requested to do so and repair your green with vigour.

While we watch fresh green leaves appear on the trees the very thought of welcome rain comes to mind. Although these Highveld showers will be most welcome, they are a reminder of the damage the carts do to the fairways in wet weather. Please consider this when the time comes and enforce the 90-degree rule, which makes it possible for you to use your cart but protect the fairways at the same time.

A big thank you to all the ladies that played league this year. Due

to the difficulty of filling the Saturday league teams, we will only enter one Saturday team next year.

Spring is in the air. Have you noticed how beautiful the trees are when the new season brings life to their bleak and bare win-ter branches? I trust this will inspire you to become like the trees and experience the invigorating energy of the new season that is upon us. As the saying goes: ‘Remember to stop and smell the roses’. Share this positive energy with the people that are not as fortunate as us to live in this beautiful Estate of ours.

The National Woman’s Day charity golf day was very successful, especially if one considers the financial pressure that companies and individuals are experiencing at present. I hope that all participants enjoyed the day with us. A special thank you to all the sponsors and especially to Jannes, Johan, Chris, Nicola, Amarille and the staff at the club for their contributions to the day.

The Gauteng Inter Region was played at Randpark on 11 Au-

gust 2009 and sadly, Gauteng beat us this year. 1st Gauteng2nd Gauteng North3rd North WestThanks to the six ladies of our club that represented Gauteng

North at this event.

Coming in September 2009:

3 September Ladies Open

5 September Spring Day

6 September Mixed League at Waterkloof Golf Club

17 September Ladies Mini Open

20 September Mixed League at Pretoria Golf Club

22 September GNGU Woman’s Bronze Champions

I am inviting all our ladies to join us on Thursday mornings for a round of golf – please book at the Pro Shop.

From the Rule Book - Slow play

Without knowing I see both Barry and I wrote about the same topic in last month’s Interface.

Those of you who watched the Bridgestone Invitational this month would have seen the two major winners, Tiger Woods and Padraig Harrington, being put on the clock at the 16th after being deemed to be too far behind their allotted time for play. Taking into consideration that they were the last pairing for the day, should the tour officials have allowed them to fall behind?

It is clear from this that it does not matter if you are leading the four-ball behind you by some distance or not, you should still en-deavour to keep up with the four-ball in front of you.

Until next month, enjoy your golf and may you have many birdies.

National Women’s Golf Day

According to a post on the National Institute for Communica-ble Diseases (NICD) in South Africa website (www.nicd.ac.za), as of the 16th of July 2009, 104 laboratory confirmed cases of pan-demic influenza A (H1N1) 2009 infection have been reported in South Africa. Eight of the nine provinces have reported cases with the majority of these residing in Gauteng, followed by the Western Cape and then the Eastern Cape. The majority of the cases have presented in males between the ages of four and 70 years old. Almost all of the cases have presented as mild illnesses with or without associated fever.

This same website provides some informative answers to burn-ing questions that parents may have regarding this new form of flu.

H1N1 is a new influenza virus infecting humans. It was first de-tected as affecting humans in the USA in April 2009, but was prob-ably already prevalent in Mexico before then. This new virus was initially thought to be a type of influenza virus that infects pigs and sometimes spreads to humans (hence the initial name of ‘swine flu’), however further studies have revealed that it is not a virus that originates directly from pigs, but is rather a new virus formed by the recombination of several different genetic elements from pigs, avian and human species.

An influenza pandemic occurs when a new influenza virus emerges to which the majority of humans are non-immune and which can spread efficiently and sustainably amongst humans. This virus appears to meet these criteria and has already affected a large number of countries across the globe, hence it has been essential to activate global responses.

Available information on the subject suggests that this virus spreads from person to person much in the same way as that of seasonal flu, which is mainly through respiratory droplet transmis-sion. One becomes infected when you breathe in droplets that are generated when an infected person coughs or sneezes. In addi-tion to this, the infection can result if there is contact with surfaces contaminated by the virus such as doorknobs or handles and then transferring the virus by touching the mouth, nose or eyes. Studies have shown that the virus can survive on such surfaces and can infect a person for up to two to eight hours after being deposited on the surface. The isolation period, should you display any of the

symptoms associated with this virus or if you test positive for the

virus, is at least seven days.

It is important to mention that although it carries the nickname

‘swine flu’, you cannot contract the virus from eating pork or pork

products. If you live in areas where people have been identified with

the virus and you become ill with flu-like symptoms including fever,

body aches, runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting or

diarrhoea, you should stay at home and avoid contact with other

people. Only leave your home to seek medical care.

Emergency warning signs in children that need urgent medical

attention include:

Rapid breathing or trouble breathing

Bluish or grey skin colour

Not drinking enough fluids

Severe or persistent vomiting

Not waking up or not interacting

Being so irritable that the child doesn’t want to be held

Flu-like symptoms improve, but then return with fever and a

worse cough

Emergency warning signs in adults that need urgent medical at-

tention include:

Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath

Pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen

Sudden dizziness

Confusion

Severe or persistent vomiting

Flu-like symptoms improve, but then return with fever and a

worse cough

Precautionary advice for those of us who are well, is to maintain

a good distance from anyone displaying flu-like symptoms. Refrain

from touching your mouth and nose, practice good hand hygiene

frequently and reduce close contact with people who may be ill as

much as possible.

If at any point you feel that you or anyone in your family is at risk,

seek medical attention immediately.

Know your neighbours!

Meet the du Toit family who have been living in 8 Melrose Close for just over a year and love every minute of it!

Hanli, the lady of the house, grew up in Irene and her husband, Rudi also grew up in Centurion. They have been married for 13 years and moving into our wonderful Estate has been a dream of theirs for a long time. Now that they have finally made that dream come true, they are really enjoying the sense of freedom and open spaces our Estate has to offer.

Hanli is an Architect Technologist, which is a job that she loves and she specialises in residential family homes. She currently han-dles all the building plans for our Estate and she is working closely with the HOA to ensure that we see more beautiful upgrades and changes to the properties around us. Hanli is well known for her friendly manner and her eagerness to lend a creative hand when it comes to refreshing and new ideas. Rudi is a Manager for McCarthy Land Rover Constantia Kloof. Cars and the motor industry is his passion.

Their 6 year old son, Ruben, shares his dad’s passion for any-thing with wheels! Rudi is a keen mountain biker and Ruben is already following in his footsteps. He also loves Lego building and is an excellent designer of all Lego creations – Mom’s influ-ence coming through? While her boys are mountain biking and building designer creations, Hanli loves to sit down with a good book.

We wish the du Toit family many more happy years on our Estate.

September 2009 I 24

With all the recent negativity that we seem to be creating for ourselves, we went in search of some positive and we discovered a website – www.sagoodnews.co.za. We then came across a link to another site – www.itstartswithyou.co.za which is the official website of ‘The Movement for Good’.

The Movement for Good is a network of organisations that have come together to inspire and mobilise South Africans to become active citizens for good. Their vision is to build a country that lives based on its constitutional values, is safe and has opportunity for all - so that we, and our children have hope in our future.

The Movement aims to integrate organisations that are currently mobilising South Africans so that there is coherency and synergy across the various campaigns. All across our great nation, good people have been independently organising, tirelessly striving and selflessly building communities that care.

You can play a part in this, no matter how insignificant you think you or your actions may be. Every little bit makes a difference and if we can mobilise the collective, as The Movement believes we can, we can all contribute… for good.

The Movement encourages every person to become an active citizen, to take action - any action - to make South Africa the coun-try we all want to live in.

What is an active citizen? An active citizen...Speaks positively about South Africa Upholds our constitution and the laws of the land Takes part in our democracy Does not bribe or buy stolen goods Participates in community projects Is sensitive to the needs of the less fortunate Respects the environment Believes that they can make a difference Lives by the notion – ‘I am because we are’ ...and so much more!

Why was The Movement for Good started?

South Africans are good people - 93% of South Africans give to social causes (with donations, with time and with materials). Ordi-nary individuals donate R12 billion annually, the corporate sector R5 billion and we have 100 000 NGOs that are working to make a difference. Yet our headlines are dominated by stories of crime, cor-ruption, HIV/Aids, poor education and lack of delivery.

The positive energy of South Africans, so much of which is below the radar, needs to be harnessed. Good people need to connect and mobilise.

The Movement for Good aims to do just that by co-ordinating the campaigns and activities of partner organisations and individuals.

•••••••••••

The motto of the movement is ‘Noka e tlatswa ke dinokana’ – ‘A river swells from little streams’ and is based on the premise that each and every South African has the capacity to make a difference in their families, their communities and society as a whole, so that the whole of South Africa can benefit from our own individual ac-tions.

It is about personal responsibility. It is about not saying “They must fix it”, but saying “I can fix it”.

The networking platform… for good

“If we work together, we can transform South Africa by creating an unstoppable momentum and ultimately a tipping point,” said the Executive Director of Heartlines, Garth Japhet at the launch.

As part of The Movement, Heartlines have launched a revolu-tionary networking tool, the For Good Social Networking Platform (SNP), which uses communication technology to bring people across the country together.

The vision for the For Good SNP is based on the statistic that approximately 80% of South Africans have access to a cell phone, which inspired the concept of harnessing this communication tool ‘for good’. A technological platform has been developed to enable people to join as members of the For Good network via cell phone or via www.forgood.co.za, thus becoming part of a larger movement for positive action.

The For Good SNP will send out weekly SMS messages provid-ing inspiring and practical information on taking action – for individu-als, families and community groups. The network will also connect active citizens from the same areas who want to get involved in a similar way.

To register on the For Good network, visit www.forgood.co.za or SMS ‘good’ to 32197 (do it now!).

Who can join The Movement for Good?

Any organisation that runs a campaign that is ‘for good’ can join. Individuals can join by supporting any of the campaigns run by member organisations of The Movement for Good or by joining the For Good SNP.

Where can I get more information about The Movement for Good?

The Movement for Good website (www.itstartswithyou.co.za) provides information on how organisations can join The Movement for Good, as well as links for individuals to support the campaigns of member organisations or to join the For Good Social Networking Platform.

It’s time to mobilise our nation, to bring us all together into an unstoppable force.

It starts with us. It starts with you.
