Muskegon Community College will offer and promote programs and services that include practical evidence-based approaches to decrease or stop to-bacco use for students
and employees.
All college employees are to assist in moni-toring and enforcing
the above policy.

the semester!

Welcome back to those who were off this summer – and wel-come to those individu-als who are new to the
MCC Family.
At the August 19, 2009 meeting of the MCC Board of Trustees passed a policy for a Tobacco Free Envi-ronment effective
January 1, 2010.
Living tobacco free may be one of the most important things you can do to main-tain a healthy lifestyle. Ac-cording to the American Lung Association, tobacco is the leading cause of pre-ventable death in the world. Research shows that tobacco users have higher health care costs than non-users – smoking alone costs the U.S. nearly $150 billion each year in health care expenses.
(Health works).
Kicking a tobacco habit can be hard, but we will be working on a number of programs designed to give you information and sup-
port.
Tobacco Free Policy ~
The use, distribution or sale of tobacco is prohibited in college buildings, on college premises and in vehi-cles owned, rented or
leased by the college.
The College President or designee will de-velop and periodically review administrative regulations and proce-dures necessary to maintain this policy, including provisions for notification, signage, disciplinary conse-quences, complaint procedures, enforce-ment and guidelines for temporary policy
waivers.

Flu Shot Facts to
Know:
Vaccination is especially important for people at high risk for serious flu complications and those who live with or take care of such people, in-
cluding:
-Children age 6 months
to 5 years
-People age 50 and older
-Pregnant women
-People with chronic health conditions like asthma, diabetes, or
heart or lung disease
However, the flu vaccine is not for everyone. The shot is not approved for infants under 6 months old. People allergic to chicken eggs and those
We all have better things to do than hud-dle in bed for a week with the fever, fatigue, aches, cough, runny nose and sneezing that come with the flu. You can help yourself and your family avoid all that misery by making sure everyone who can has an annual flu vacci-nation. The vaccine offers the single best protection there is against the seasonal flu, according to Linda Scott, BSN, Director of Private Care for VNS
Homecare & Hospice.
who’ve had a serious reaction to the flu shot in the past should get a
doctor’s OK first.
There are two types of flu vaccine: injection and nasal spray. The list of who can use the nasal spray is more limited than for the shot; check with your doctor about what’s right for you. Once you’ve been vacci-nated, it takes about two weeks for the flu-fighting protection to kick in. You’ll need to update that protection each year. Vaccines are devel-oped according to ex-perts’ projections about which flu strains are likely to be common in
the coming year.
Foil the Flu - Protect those you love with a shot for the Flu Stay-well advice:
Besides getting the flu vaccine, improve your likelihood of staying healthy during cold and
flu season by;
-Not touching your
eyes, nose or mouth
-Washing your hands
often
-Avoiding sick people

In the past we have good re-
sponse to book reviews and we
are hopeful that that trend will
continue. On October 1 at
3:30 we will begin our discus-
sion of Matt Miller’s recently

these ideas as being dead - Our
kids will earn more than we do -
Free trade is always good, no mat-
ter who gets hurt - Employers
should be responsible for health

omy - Schools are a local matter -
Money follows merit. Copies of
the book can be purchased in

price. Let Don Bogema know if
you plan to attend. Please have
