Learning Space Plan: Brand Audit Conference Room at Mixdesign 2

    Learning Space Environment DescriptionOverview

I am proposing to create a new learning space environment for Mixdesign; abranding company. Mixdesign provides brand audits and in-depth brandingconferences with clients that include Fair Oaks Farms, Churchs Chicken, RedRobin, Horseshoe Casino, and many more. Mixdesign's focus is to learn a companysbrand personality. Its objectives, strategies, and standards are all very importantaspects. A brands rollout design, print, programming and architecture wouldfollow the research or audit. We create the consistency tools to help your team

launch, structure, or a brand.Mixdesign is located in Schererville, Indiana. I am a graphic artist and social mediamarketer for the company. The conference space is used to teach owners, companymanagers, business executives, and the general public about branding, designpossibilities, conceptual layouts, and space planning.

    Mission and Values

Mixdesigns mission is to create one of a kind custom branding and design elements. We aim to fully understand and learn about the brands personality in order tocreate truly unique and all-encompassing solutions. This may include art dcor,

interior packages, banner advertisements, or interior design. Research, creativity, teamwork, and strategy are our core values.

Mixdesign focuses on creatively and strategically renewing, creating, or maintaininga brand. Each facet of Mixdesign is brought to life by the team comprised of 10people including owner Michaline Pavnica-Tomich. She founded Mix in 2002; it has

just passed its 10-year anniversary. Each team member was handpicked to fit theqwirky brilliant group that now stands.

    Learning Groups

Those who work in the environment include: graphic artists, photographers, architects, business owners, business managers, and event hosting clients.

The company is comprised of graphic artists with skills in multiple areas. We alsohave an in-house architect. Those who work for the company are mainly visualpeople. This particular group requires a very creative or stimulating environment. The other group that will use the space will include business professionals andclients. While some of these people may prefer visuals, a large number require hard

facts and explanations in order for them to support the visuals or design conceptsbeing made for their company Felder (n.d.).

Mixdesigns employee age range is 21 to 35. Their job relies on their abilities tointeract with technologies. It is safe to say that those at Mixdesign would openlyembrace new technology.

Leaning styles for those who work at Mixdesign:

Most of the mix team is balanced between active and reflective learners. We aredownloaded on the information our clients need. Once this is reflected on webegin a sketch process. Digital renderings are then created. It takes both the

reflective and the active styles to quickly create a design that meets the needs of theclient PBS NEWS Hour (2010).

The group is dominantly made of visual people. There is only one verbal learner inthe group who handles proposals, grants, and general paperwork. While mostpeople are generally visual learners, the case with mix is more extreme. In order tofully service the verbal learner within the group it is important to includeexplanations or summaries Felder (2011).

The group works globally. While we at times we utilize outlines, we generally learnby getting the big picture about the client. Then we connect the dots. Once this isdone we follow a procedure of events to create the work Felder (n.d.).

We are also intuitive workers. They like to explore and discover the possibilities ofthe clients brand with powerful and thoughtful design solutions. While at timesthey may work.

Clients work with us reflectively. They take in what we are telling and showing themabout their brand. They then give us a direction as far as how they want us to handletheir branding needs Felder (n.d.). .

Most of our clients are balanced between visual and verbal learners. They requirehard facts and explanations, but also need visuals. They are receiving theexplanations as well as getting the visual. We also provide agendas and outlines.

Our clients are sequential learners. They understand in linear steps. In order for oursolutions to be logical to them a progression is needed for them to support ourdesign solutions. Clients are sensing; they like facts and details. They want practicaland cost-effective solutions without having to think much about connecting the dots.

Based on the wide range in background, age, nationality, and culture it is hard tocast a net on their skills, knowledge, attitudes, and perspectives among the clients. But there are certain areas that are generally the same. Most of our clients come witha college background or degree. They are all skilled in their field whether it bebusiness owner or chef; they come with some expertise. Attitude is hard to gagebecause it is usually tied to their perspective and age. Experience plays a huge rolein adult learners Felder (n.d.).

Working and LearningThe employees learn from each other, as each person has a ton of little tricks andtips for handling the software, technologies, and overall methods for the projects wehandle. While we are all relatively gifted in certain areas, there is a strong sense ofteamwork. We also get together for staff and project meetings that we calldownloads in order to help asses where we are on projects.

This space will help to serve as a great place to update the staff on new or currentoptions. If we have ideas floating around in our heads we would be able to sketchthem out or digitally render them. It would also be a place to upload our projectimages or websites we have found that we find valuable. We would also be able to

    do thorough research on clients.

The conference room is a place to display our research and design renderings toclients. The room would now enable us to efficiently display for our clients possiblebranding strategies PBS NEWS Hour (2010).

In this learning space people will be researching brands, and that of theircompetition, in order to properly serve them. In order to fully market and properlydesign for a client, Mix must truly understand the nature of their business. Those

who are there to audit their own brands will learn about what branding entails. Thisincludes:

what their brand needs or doesnt need

how to stay relevant and important now, and against their competitors.

how to describe their brand and its personality

They will also be coming up with creative ideas or solutions to the things they willbe learning. Those who conduct the brand audit will give them creative solutionsthat apply to their company Felder (2011).

Multiple things need to occur in this space in order to fully engage and create theenvironment needed to meet the goals of both Mixdesign and the client. At timessmall groups will work together. Several board meetings, pitches, and or staffmeetings will take place all of which require an open forum. The space may be usedfor seminars or brand revival.

We plan to use the space to hold seminars, webinars, podcasts, and tutorials. This

would be done to teach, inform, engage, or interact with the public and our clients.Technology would play a very large role in the space. The employees of Mixdesignare very accepting of technology. They work primarily with technology toaccomplish their tasks. This translates to a high motivation to work with newtechnology. Those who would be clients would or could be more hesitant aboutinteracting with technology. Mixdesign would slowly eases them into the technologyportion, or simply provide a presentation McKenzie (2010).

They use a large level of exposure to technology and often seek it out, however theyalso use tracing paper, sketching pens/pencil. Any and all things they may need to

create a design are already open for use at Mix.

Our clients have a lot of access to technology and for the most part carry smartphones and iPads. However, they may be comfortable outside of that zone. Their usefor technology is different than ours at Mix. Their technology is to stay in touch orschedule what is needed, not design and create Dr. Tae (2011).

Adaptation ChartsThe adaptation charts below assess the tasks that will take place in the conferenceroom. The charts also include assistive technologies that may be needed for taskcompletion. Within the conference room staff meetings, brainstorming sessions, research, client meetings, & client audits will take place. The tasks being performedare generally creative and visual. Clients and employees will be accessing theplethora of technologies within the room. Four main categories have been assessed(Mobile, Hearing, Audio, & Cognitive Learning) Abou-Zahara (2012).

Assistive Technology Review: DragonNaturallySpeaking Premium Edition

The Dragon software is meant to enable and increaseproductivity and efficiency for anyone. However, it is a

wonderful tool for those who may have disabilities. Thesoftware is a voice-activated note taking dictationprogram. Spoken words quickly turn into text. Their

website claims it translates talk into text three timesmore quickly than typing. The software comes with a

    99% accuracy rate.

The software can help to create notes, reports, emails, presentations and even appointments. This particularedition is wireless and allows mobile devices to record and transcribe the spokendictation to PCs at other locations. Imagine being in the car taking down thoughtsand having them typed up and waiting for you at the office!

This is a completely ergonomic solution to handling carpel tunnel and stress injuriesfrom working or typing at a desk. Dragon software enables one to walk around orcomplete mobile tasks while still getting work done. The software is completely

compatible with apple devices as well.

The software comes with interactive tutorials and simulations that allow users topractice and learn dictation. Correction and editing practices are also a part of thelearning process so that efficiency will remain at a high. Dragons system includes adaily tip to keep new information accessible. It also includes a Dragon Sidebar forimportant commands and desired tips to add to the product.

Dragon systems are compatible with several frequented programs and applications.Documents can be created in Word, Office, WordPerfect, Excel, PowerPoint, andmore. The software also works with Mozilla, Chrome, Firefox, Facebook, Twitter,Gmail, and even more. An additional feature that allows for even more efficiency isthe ability to use Voice Shortcuts.

Imagine how much easier Dragon software could aid those who have physicalhandicaps or blindness. There are a great number of people who do not have thedexterity of their hands; typing is either difficult or not a viable possibility for them.Dragon allows them to dictate what it is they want to jot down. Proposals and

reports can be efficiently created without the painstaking task of typing. Wholepresentations, charts, and spreadsheets can be put together without worry or findinganother person to do it manually for them.

Blindness is also an area that can inhibit a user. While most use Braille in order tocommunicate; they may not want to use a Braille translator. Braille translatorsystems and embossers are extremely expensive. The Dragon system is aninexpensive way to create documents or take down notes without the need forBraille. Also, if the user desired, their notes could be translated and printed inBraille.

The Dragon system ismeant to create ease andefficiency. It eliminates thekeyboard middleman. Thisis true for those who areblind. They can dictatetheir ideas or thoughts

    without having to typethem out.

    Another possibility for Mix

would be to purchase a fewmore licenses than we

would require at this time.We could then outfitclients or employees whomay be unable to travel to

the office. They could be provided with the technology so they may be able tocommunicate with us if they are visually or physically impaired.

At this point in time, Mixdesign does not employ or work with anyone who is blind or

physically disabled; but there may come a time when we do. It is important to beaccessible to anyone. Dragon helps to aid two different groups that may needassistive technology.

However, the software can aid anyone in the office. That is what makes the programa wonderful tool that can be utilized be anyone and everyone. The owner isconstantly busy or in meetings. The Bluetooth wireless headpiece allows dictating

from a car or just about anywhere as long as you are hooked up to a mobile device. She would be able to remember important thoughts, get down possible concepts, ordictate tasks that need to be accomplished without having the possibility of having tophysically write the down.

If we were completely swamped with projects but needed to multi-task, employeesof Mixdesign could efficiently create a number of documents that we would need toaccomplish and still meet the other tasks of the day.

Without a doubt, Dragon NaturallySpeaking Premium Edition is a clear gain forMixdesign. The program offers numerous possibilities that will aid in assistive

technologies. It is somewhat inexpensive. This suitecosts $299.00 and comes with oneheadset. I have found an independentplace to purchase the headsets somultiple people in the office canutilize the technology. Below is thelink to the Dragon site along with thelink for the headsets.

Learning Space DesignOverviewI am planning a highly interactive environment that allows for stimulation for those

who are both visual and or verbal learners. The space is rectangular. The far wall ismade of one floor to ceiling window. In order to take advantage of the space, I planfor a long table in the center. The table will include cases for built-in iPads.

While the walls are high and long I plan to use them as optimally as possible. Onone wall I would like to include a large wall installation of television screens forprojected visuals, spreadsheets, and or presentation documents. Along the opposite

wall I would like to include a unique and interesting way for those who areparticipating in the meeting to sketch, contribute, or input in a non-technological

way. Chalkboard paint can be purchased to create a unique surface. I would like arelease for those who prefer to manually put something together.

I would like to create bench seating that doubles as storage against the back window. The front wall has a door that takes up half of the space. The rest is open for playing

with. I plan to mount a whiteboard on this wall.

    Aesthetic and Universal Design Considerations

Most of the design choices I have made were based on the look and feel ofMixdesign. Each aspect needs to return back to the brand that is being represented,

and that of the people that will interact within it. The colors and furnishings need tospeak to Mixdesigns style. Mixdesign has a color palate already in place. The colorsinclude a charcoal gray and a muted gold. Other colors include a deep purple, blue, and red.

I would like to use custom lightingfixtures that work on a dimmer. Thecompany is based on unique andthoughtful brand solutions. I wouldlike the furnishings to say the sameabout this space. The picture on theright is how the track lighting abovethe conference table would appear. However, it would consist of onlyone row.

Around the TV installation I would also like toinclude LED light strips to back light the screens.LED strip lighting can be seen on the left.

The conference table will be custom built byMixdesign, and will incorporate spaces for iPads. These iPad stations will also have stands for proppingup the iPads. The table will include additional built-instations underneath the tabletop. Examples of tabledesign can be seen below.

In order to design for all, the conference room must be accessible to persons withdisabilities. Those with mobility impairment should be able to access the table andother interactive areas, which include the whiteboard, markerboards, andchalkboard areas. A great deal of thought was put into the size and space for eachelement of technology and analog device within the room. The overall layout wascreated to be simple and flexible. The room will incorporate enough equipment tobe equitably used by everyone.

Learning Activities in the EnvironmentPeople will be working in a large group to take in all presented information.Generally speaking, once we have all brainstormed together, we then move on to

working on an individual basis. Once this is done we gather again to review, edit, and revise our work based on everyones input.

When completing an audit we would do a presentation. Communicating visually andeffectively with the client is essential. Designers would have the opportunity tocreate a solution with the client.

With all of the proposed technology available, the client would walk out of the door

with a large amount of knowledge as to what is happening, or could happen withtheir brand. They would also have ready to go proposed solutions they could thinkover.

In an article titled 6 Ways to Unleash Creativity in the Workplace written byMichel Poh( n.d.), they address the importance of rewarding creativity. A moresystematic way of promoting creativity in the workplace is to set up innovationteams Poh (n.d.) This is very similar to the type of structure we use at Mixdesign. Inthe article the innovation teams are assigned to come up with ideas on specificprojects and tasks. We include this process during revisions.

The conference room is planned to be full of technology. Learning Technologist JeffTillet writes, Effective technology infusion promotes lifelong learning, collaboration, personal pursuits, and productivity. Because of technologicaladvances, we can gather perspectives from innumerable sources. As a staff wespend a large amount of time working on technology to be productive.

    Flat Screen Wall Installation: Samsung 32 1080 P ($449.00)

On one of the long sidewalls I would like to put in a large flat-screen wall instillation

that is creatively and aesthetically done. The installation will be made from 4 flatscreen tvs arranged in an artistic & creative way. The installation will be used toproject visuals, presentations, concepts, and ideas. A Mac Mini will also be attachedto this installation; it serves as a computer on a separate input. The will allow anyfiles on the computer to be projected. Users will be able to view presentations, hear, observe, create, and possibly interact with clients on this installation. It will requirea wireless keyboard and mouse.

The proposed conference room has used the principles of universal design so as tomeet the needs of everyone. UD-I TEACH is a model demonstration project held atthe University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (2010). They state in a recent post titledAssistive Technology and Universal Design in Education: Whats theRelationship? that UD interventions are given to everyone with the understandingthat those who need specialized support will use the tools when they need them(UD-I TEACH 2010). The proposal above has addressed assistive technology in thesame manner. If we do hire or work with anyone who needs assistance, we will havethe required tools and technology.

North Carolina State University is home to the Center for Universal Design. They

published an article titled The Principles of Universal Design (1997). In it, theprinciples and guidelines of universal design are outlined. The proposed conferenceroom adheres to these principles. It has been created to be flexible, especially in itsability to provide different methods of choice. It meets the requirements to beconsidered simple and intuitive by maintaining consistent expectation. The roomalso accommodates a wide range of literacy and language skills (North CarolinaState University 1997). But more than that, it meets the principle to be perceptible. The room uses different modes of presentation of information. It also will maximizeon the readability of the content being presented or researched. Below you will beable to see the proposed layout of the room (Connell 1997).
