In 2019 the application to the Council of Europe for the certification of the Cultural Route “In the Steps of Apostle Paul” – Presentation of the application procedure steps at the 2nd Local Support Group meeting of the Cult-RinG project In September 2019, on the initiative of the Regional Development Fund of Central Macedonia on behalf of the Region of Central Macedonia as the lead partner of the Cult-RinG project, an application will be submitted to the Council of Europe for the certification of the cultural route "In the Steps of Apostle Paul" as one of the 33 Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe. This initiative involves and will be supported by three (3) European Regions, the Region of Central Macedonia in Greece, the Region of Paphos in Cyprus and the Lazio Region in Italy. In June 2018, the 2nd Local Support Group was called by the Regional Development Fund of Central Macedonia on behalf of the Central Macedonia in order all the preparatory actions, the timetable for the certification procedure and the involvement of each stakeholder to be presented and discussed. The Governor of the Region of Central Macedonia, Mr. Apostolos Tzitzikostas, who was present to the Local Support Group meeting, stated that “the Region (of Central Macedonia) is in close cooperation with the Cult-RinG project partners from Cyprus and Italy for this common effort for the certification of the cultural route”.
In the footsteps of St Paul, the Apostle of the nations
The first steps towards the Route’s certification is the
formalization of the cooperation among the four (4)
main involved partners of the Cult-RInG project – the
Region of Central Macedonia in Greece, the Lazio
Region in Italy, the Pafos Tourism Board in Cyprus and
the European Cultural Tourism Network in Belgium – by
the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding and
the foundation of the “In the steps of Apostle Paul”
Network, which will constitute the official European
network of the Route and will also undertake the
application procedure. "The Region’s aim is the “In the
Steps of Apostle Paul" Route to join the Council of
Europe's Cultural Routes. Our main objective through
this initiative is to trigger the involvement of local
actors, municipalities, Metropolises, Universities,
cultural and tourism operators and the community and
make them active along this Route. We have already
organized working group meetings towards this
direction" said Mr. Tzitzikostas.

Michael Cramer MEP, in Serres for the "Eurovelo
Cycling Routes" as a Cultural Route
Fully informative and very useful was the
presentation on "Eurovelo Cycling Routes Networks"
by the Member of the European Parliament, Mr.
Michael Cramer, which took place in the afternoon of
Monday, May 7, at Konstantinos Karamanlis Hall of
the Regional Unit of Serres. The Deputy Governor of
Serres, Mr. Giannis Moisiadis, welcomed Mr. Cramer
and presented him to the Regional Councilor, Mr.
Athanasios Maslarinos, as well as to local
stakeholders related to cycling tourism.
Mr Cramer presented evidence of the major rise of
the cycling movement in Europe and how cycling
tourism became and constitute key element of the
alternative tourism industry in Europe.
Mr Cramer focused his presentation to the cycling
route “Eurovelo 13”, also known as “The Iron Curtain
Trail”, which run along the former Iron Curtain, the
boundary dividing Europe into two separate areas
from the end of World War II in 1945 until the end of
the Cold War in 1992. “Eurovelo 13” (Iron Curtain
Trail) stretches from northern Scandinavia (Finland)
to the Black Sea, running along 10.000 km of former
Eastern Bloc border lines.
The Regional Unit of Serres, at this enormous long-
distance cycling route, plays a small but significant
important role in tourism development and
promotion. Serres intend to settle within the
European cultural routes’ map through the
development of the “Eurovelo 13” Greek section.
The aim of Mr. Cramer's visit was to raise awareness
of the local actors of the Regional Unit of Serres on
the “Eurovelo 13” route, as well as on the cycling
tourism and its impact to the local economy, inviting
them to join the “Iron Curtain Trail” Network. The
Deputy Governor of Serres, Mr. Moisiadis ensured
that the Regional Unit is willing to support this
initiative and to facilitate all the necessary
procedures for the development of the Eurovelo 13
Route Greek part.

Study Tour in Lazio Region, Italy
A Study Tour along the Via Francigena, north and
south of Rome, took place in Italy - Lazio
Region - from 21st to 23rd May 2018, to show
the tourist activities carried out along the Via
Francigena Cultural Route to the Project Partners
and their stakeholders and also to arrange
meetings with local stakeholders.
The Study Tour was especially designed to share
the experience and the different ways
and approaches of taking care of people and
tourists walking along this important Itinerary.
The Programme also included a final meeting of
the Partners to discuss and lay down the next
steps of the project.
There were about 25 participants.
The group experienced the different ways of
animation and promotion of the
territory as for example the “Spazio Pensilina” in
Viterbo - a smart work of reconversion of
an old bus station into an info point - where
pilgrims, walkers, visitors and tourists can find
assistance and advice.
The Spazio Pensilina is also an example of “good
practices and sustainability”, thanks to
the inclusion of disabled persons taking care of
the services and facilities.
The participants also had the chance to
experience a quite different way of exploring
the Via Francigena by canoeing along the
Cavata river which flows just next to the Via
Appia, south of Rome.
Generally speaking parks, small and rural villages,
castles, churches, old towns, monuments, nature
and every kind of beauties the territory is rich of,
excited the admiration of our Partners also thanks
to the work of local Associations and
Municipalities really concerned with the
development of new activities with the dual
purpose of implementing tourism and, therefore,
economy and to increase the youth
employment. The visit of our Partners has surely
encouraged all the people involved in this
project to improve and strengthen their work.
