St. Agatha

Agatha was martyred at Catania in Sicily, probably during the perse-

cution of Decius. She is among the saints commemorated in the Ro-

man Canon. Although she is one of the most highly venerated of the

virgin martyrs in the early Church there is little reliable information

about Agatha beyond the fact that she died a martyr’s death. She is

known to have been put to death because of the courageous profession

of her Christian faith in Catania, Sicily. It is not certain in which peri-

od her martyrdom took place although it is believed to have been dur-

ing the persecution of the Emperor Decius (250-253).

Although the martyrdom of St. Agatha is accepted as genuine and her

veneration as a saint had spread beyond her birthplace already in early

times, there is still no reliable information of how she met her death.

According to the Acts of her life (in both Latin and Greek), Agatha,

daughter of a distinguished family and a girl of great beauty, was pur-

sued by a Senator Quintianus who had fallen in love with her. As his

proposals were resolutely spurned by the young girl, he put her in

charge of an evil woman, whose efforts at seduction were thwarted by

Agatha’s commitment to her Christian faith. Quintianus then had her

subjected to various cruel tortures. Of these, the most barbaric was an

order to have her breasts cut off. This became the peculiar characteris-

tic in medieval images of the saint. She is often depicted carrying her

excised breasts on a platter. (More recently, she has been venerated as

patron saint of breast cancer patients.)

However, it was said that Agatha was consoled by a vision of St Peter,

who healed her miraculously. Her scorned admirer eventually sen-

tenced her to death by being burnt at the stake. However, she was

saved from this fate by a mysterious earthquake. She later died in

prison as a result of the repeated cruelties inflicted on her. However, it

must be said that this narrative from the Acts cannot really claim to

have any historical reliability.

Both Catania and Palermo in Sicily claim the honour of being Aga-

tha’s birthplace. Her feast is kept on 5 February and her office in the

Roman Breviary is drawn in part from the Latin Acts. Catania honours

St. Agatha as its patron saint, and throughout the region around Mt.

Etna she is invoked against eruptions of the volcano, as elsewhere

against fire and lightning. In some places bread and water are blessed

during Mass on her feast after the Consecration, and called Agatha

bread. It is thought that this blessing of the bread may have come from

the mistaken notion that, in images of her, what she was carrying on

the platter were loaves of bread.

W wielu kościołach 5 lutego we wspomnienie św. Agaty świę-

ci się sól, chleb i wodę. Za wstawiennictwem świętej mają one

chronić nas i nasze domostwa, mieszkania od niebezpie-

czeństw pożaru i od innych przeciwności.

Poświęcony chleb matki ofiarują dzieciom, gdy te opuszczają

dom rodzinny wyjeżdżając do szkoły lub na emigrację. Zdarza

się, że kierowcy poświęcony chleb umieszczają w swoich sa-

mochodach.

Dlaczego poświęca się sól? Tłumaczy to piękna legenda zwią-

zana ze św. Agatą. Przed przeszło trzystu laty w krakowskich

składach niedaleko Bramy Grodzkiej wybuchł groźny pożar,

miasto uratowała od zagłady pewna stara żebraczka, rzucając

w płomienie sól św. Agaty, co sprawiło, że ogień zgasł. Chcia-

ła by rajcowie miejscy ufundowali kościół ku czci tej, której

zawdzięczali ocalenia miasta. Rajcy zobowiązali się do wybu-

dowania świątyni, jednak nie dotrzymali słowa.

W pożarze z 1655 – spłonęły doszczętnie przedmieścia wa-

welskiego grodu, podpalone przez szwedzkiego najeźdźcę –

dopatrywano się kary za niedotrzymanie obietnicy. Kościoła

pod wezwaniem św. Agaty nie ma w Krakowie do dzisiaj.

W „Żywotach Świętych Pańskich na wszystkie dni roku” z

1937r. czytamy: „Chrystusowi służyć jest największą wolno-

ścią i najwyższym szlachectwem”. Prawdziwości tych słów

świętej Agaty nie będą rozumieli ludzie, którym służba Chry-

stusowa ciężko przychodzi. Sądzą oni, że goniąc za światowy-

mi uciechami są prawdziwie wolni i prawdziwe znajdą szczę-

ście. Ale jakże się mylą! Znajdą tylko niewolę, gorycz, niepo-

kój i wyrzuty sumienia. Mieć prawdziwą wolność, znaczy

służyć Chrystusowi. „Gdzie Duch Pański przebywa - mówi

Pismo święte - tam panuje wolność”. Służba taka uwalnia nas

od niewoli grzechu i szatana, wynosząc nas zarazem ponad

nasze namiętności i czyniąc szlachetnymi. Wkładając na siebie

słodkie jarzmo Chrystusa i biorąc lekkie brzemię Jego na na-

sze barki, dostępujemy słodkiej wolności dzieci Bożych, któ-

rej przyjemności są: pokój, radość, rozkosz i wesele. Chrystus

panuje w nas, a my panujemy z Chrystusem. Z Nim i przez

Niego zwyciężamy świat i szatana wraz ze złymi pożądliwo-

ściami, w nagrodę zaś uczestniczymy w wieczności w Jego

szczęśliwym panowaniu w Królestwie niebieskim. „Stawszy

się niewolnikami Boga, macie swój owoc ku poświęceniu, a

za koniec żywot wieczny” (Rzym. 6,22).
