anderOperating the RemoteCommander

Operating yourcomponentsThere are two ways to operate thecomponents on the Remote Commander(RM-AX4000).• XPRESS operation: You can operate

multiple AV components related to aspecific task, such as “watching a TV, ”or “watching a DVD,” etc. This iscalled an “XPRESS function.”

• Single component operation: You canoperate each AV componentindividually (page 27).

What is the XPRESSfunction?

An “XPRESS function” is an executableseries of commands that operate severalAV components, just by pressing one key.For example, you have to perform thefollowing operations sequentially towatch a DVD using a TV, receiver/amplifier, and DVD player.

1. Turn on the TV.2. Set the input mode of the TV to

VIDEO1.3. Turn on the receiver/amplifier.4. Set the input selector of the

receiver/amplifier to DVD.5. Turn on the DVD player.6. Start DVD playback.

By setting the above commands as anXPRESS function, you can watch a DVDby simply pressing one key.

Also, XPRESS function can memorize thestatus of power on/off, input selector foreach component, and send a signal tosynchronize the status which you wantwithout reference to the component'sstatus.

Some XPRESS functions are preset at thefactory to operate Sony brandcomponents (see the table at right). However, depending on the factorypreset code, they may not necessarily beeffective.

Controlling the volumeof visual componentsconnected to an audiocomponent

The Remote Commander (RM-AX4000) isfactory preset based on the assumptionthat you hear the sound of your visualcomponents from your TV speakers, andthat you hear sound of your audiocomponents from the loudspeakersconnected to your amplifier.

This feature enables you to control thevolume of your TV or amplifier withoutselecting TV or RCVR each time tocontrol the volume. For example, to control the volume whileusing a VCR, you do not need to selectthe TV to control the TV volume. Withthe Remote Commander, you can switchthe volume of all the visual componentsto the amplifier.

The following table shows the factorysetting of component/volume control.

Trouble with the Remote Commander's basic settings

Problem

The Remote Commanderdoes not turn on.

The LCD display turnsoff automatically.

The beep does not sound.

The touch-keys do notwork properly at theright position.

The LCD display doesnot light up even thoughthe Remote Commanderis turned on.

XPRESS function doesnot perform On-RemoteSetup.

Trouble with operation mode

Problem

The components I wantto operate do not workeven when the keys onthe Remote Commanderare pressed.

The audio/visualcomponent's volume isnot controlled by theRemote Commander.

Solution

Check the remaining battery level. If low, replace with newones.

The Remote Commander is preset at the factory to turn thedisplay off automatically if you do not operate for more than 10minutes. You can reset the automatic-off time to 1-30 minutes(page 34).

The beep is turned off. Turn the beep on (page 41).

Calibrate the alignment of the LCD display (page 39).

The contrast level is too low. Set the contrast of the LCD displayhigher. While pressing the COMMANDER OFF button, pressthe OK button. And then press theCHANNEL + button a few times to increase the contrast.

In case of On-Remote Setup, XPRESS function controls only thepower on/off of the component. If you want to control the inputselector of the TV, etc., follow the procedure for On-PC Setup.

Solution

• Get closer to the component. The maximum operatingdistance is approximately 32.8 ft. (10 m).

• Check that you are aiming the Remote Commander directlyat the component, and that there are no obstructions betweenthe Remote Commander and the component.

• Turn on the components first, if necessary.• Check that the component has infrared remote capability. For

example, if your component did not come with the Remotecommander, it probably is not capable of being controlled bya Remote Commander.

• If your visual components are connected to an audiocomponent,For On-PC Setup: See the Help menu provided in “AX RemoteEditor.”For On-Remote Setup: See “Controlling the volume of visualcomponents connected to an audio component” on page 57.

• You have assigned another component to the Label key whichwas originally set as TV or RCVR at the factory (page 45). Inthis case, the volume cannot be controlled when you select acomponent other than TV or RCVR.

A System Control keydoes not work properly.

Even if I set the Timermacro, the componentdoes not work properly.

Even if I operate anXPRESS function, the TVdoes not turn on, or itturns off.

Even if I operate anXPRESS function, theSource component doesnot turn on, or it turnsoff.

Solution

• Make sure that you have programmed the commands in thecorrect order (page 51).

• Try changing the orientation of the Remote Commander. Ifthat does not help, try placing the components as close toeach other as possible.

• Check the status of the components and make sure that youhave set the components properly to receive commands.

• The preset codes are changed or new signals have beenlearned for a key or button that has been programmed with aseries of commands. In this case, the new signals aretransmitted when the series of commands is executed.

• The component could not receive the signal from the RemoteCommander successfully. When using the Timer, check thefollowing.– Check that the Timer macro functions correctly by pressing

the TEST key, after setting the Timer macro (page 59).– Check the location of the Remote Commander.

• The status of the component is not suitable for operation (forexample, you programmed the power-on setting, assumingthat power of the component is off when the Timer turns on.However, if the power of the component is on when thecomponent receives the signal from the Remote Commander, the component will turn off).

• The Remote Commander memorizes the status of thecomponent's input selector and power on/off. However, ifyou turn on/off the component with the remote control oroperate the component directly, it will not recognize thecurrent component status. In this case, press the SYNC-UPbutton to synchronize with the status of the currentcomponent and the Remote Commander.

• If the TV turns off by its own Sleep function, the RemoteCommander does not recognize its status. Turn off the TVwith the Remote Commander. You can also turn off the TV atthe scheduled time with the Timer on the RemoteCommander.

Make sure to slide your finger from the top-left on the LCDdisplay. If you slide other than from the top-left, Air-Slidecannot recognize the action.

Solution

• Set the preset code correctly. If the preset code that is listedfirst for your component does not work, try all the presetcodes for your component in the order in which they arelisted in the supplied “Preset Code Lists.”

• Some features may not be preset. If some or all of the keys donot function correctly even after you have set the presetcodes, use the learning function to program the remotecontrol signals for the component (page 47).

• If you set a preset code after inputting character contents, they are cleared and return to the original display. Edit thecharacters after you decide the component to be used bysetting a preset code.

• Make sure to place the Remote Commander (RM-AX4000)and remote control about 1-3 inches (3-8 cm) apart. Check theremaining battery level of the remote control. If low, replacewith new ones.

I want to use multiplecomponents (such as aDVD/VCR combo) withXPRESS function.

I want to set a DVDplayer for both XPRESSDVD and XPRESS CD.

If the batteries die, arethe learned signals lost?

My PC cannot recognizethe USB connection.

Solution

In AX Remote Editor, click “Tools” on the menu bar, then select“Update Firmware for Remote” to update the firmware of theRemote Commander. If the firmware is updated, all the settingsor learned data of the Remote Commander are deleted and theRemote Commander is set back to the factory setting.

When you have a multiple components (such as a DVD/VCRcombo), select only one of either component type. For example,in the case of a DVD/VCR combo, select “DVD” or ”VCR”. Ifyou select both components, the XPRESS function will not workproperly.

For On-PC Setup: You can set multiple XPRESS functions forone component. For example, when you watch a DVD, you canset the sound to output from the TV. Or, when you listen to aCD, you can set the sound to output from the RCVR (Receiver/Amplifier).For On-Remote Setup: You can set an XPRESS function for onlyone component.
