Design engineers have numerous challenges. Our

real passion, however, lies in technology. It starts

with the client’s demands and wishes. “Sometimes

we sit around the table with our clients discussing

specifications. At others, we draft quotations based

on ready-made client specifications. In doing so, we

have to take into account the commercial viability.

And when building, we have to take on-board trans-

port and assembly issues. They generally differ for

each project.

Clear-cut and effective ‘run-up processes’ in consul-

If you ask the R&D Manager for Ultrasonic Meters

what can be expected from the department, his

enthusiasm is infectious. “You simply have to see what

our latest developments can do. It deserves a great

name.”

Race against timeElster-Instromet can be proud of the success of its

ultrasonic metering. As a pioneer, first success was

achieved in 1985. The approval for custody transfer in

1993 was another major milestone for the unique 5

path design of the Q.Sonic with swirl detection. No

loss of pressure, no moving parts and, therefore,

no wear and tear delivering a breakthrough in

accurate and reliable metering. The ultrasonic

market is now growing strongly, compared to

traditional metering technologies. Neverthe-

less, its introduction initially met with some

resistance, as the market was comfort-

able with conventional metering meth-

ods. The introduction of new methods

and techniques introduces insecurity which makes

people hesitant. Although this is true everywhere, it

is especially applicable to our sector. Our challenge

is to make metering instruments smarter and more

reliable.. We want to reduce uncertainty and increase

confidence level. One way achieving this is to develop

technologies that enable the gas meter to have the

same performance after two years of operation com-

pared to its day of purchase. We are racing against

an invisible clock and clearly always want to stay

ahead of the competition. As the pioneer from day

one, it’s a reputation we aim to maintain.

Product development can only succeed if we listen to,

and deliver what the market requires. For that reason,

we work closely with customers as well as with other

divisions within the Elster group. We build a consistent

look-and-feel into our products and strive for smarter

solutions that mean our clients have to calibrate their

equipment less frequently. One example would be

proactive maintenance, although we don’t want to

reveal too much of the new innovative solutions we’re

working on because they’re sold before we know it.

cult to extract. At the same time demand is increasing so

clients are looking for alternative solutions. At the same

time, suppliers are seeking cost reduction, stability and

continuity. We are aware the Oil & Gas sector faces major

project engineering and project management.

Integrated Metering SolutionsAs an original manufacturer, we are involved each day in

improving our products. A good example is the develop-

ment of the bi-directional turbine meter, the SMRI-X2.

We also develop entirely new applications in technology,

such as ultrasonic metering. When we combine our rec-

ognized instruments in gas metering and volume correc-

tion, systems are created and the individual components

operate together in perfect harmony. This translates into

benefits for transport, local assembly, maintenance,

management and costs, as well as a single, central point

of responsibility.

25-years on designing and building complete metering

The Ultrasonic meters Q.Sonic 3, 4 and 5 are well-known

multi-path USM’s. The patented measuring path arran-

gement, in conjunction with advanced ultrasonic sensors

and digital signal processing, allows high accuracy with

excellent long-time stability. These advantages make

them extremely suitable for HP calibration facilities for

online comparison with turbine reference meters.

Our Total Energy Concept is one of the drivers within

Elster-Instromet. Our knowledge and experience in

scores of part-projects are used continuously to derive

and implement a total-solution for our customers. Our

Engineering Managers talk passionately about finding

“We do two things: we supply metering equipment

and we offer Total Integrated Solutions. That’s a totally

different ball game. Within these solutions, products

play a supporting role and we focus on the full proc-

ess that we address together with our clients. Our

customers want advice. This is a distinguishing

factor for Elster-Instromet. One of the ways we help,

for example, is drafting specifications for gas

transport companies and gas operators.

Once the project is allocated, we provide

a turnkey solution in cooperation with the

client. The client may provide the civil

engineering while we are responsible for

project management, technical engineer-

ing and any third-party purchases. We take on the in-

vestment, the maintenance and, importantly, accurate

metering.

We thrive on complex projects. There is an undeni-

able need for absolute accuracy when transporting

large volumes of gas. Deviations can easily add up

to hundreds of thousands of Euros per day. It’s here

in particular that the Total Energy Concept shows its

added value. With smart combinations of the most

suitable products we reduce metering uncertainty

while concurrently monitoring all processes.

Our Project Engineering takes place mainly in Belgium,

UK, India and Malaysia. We invite our clients to inspect

our solutions prior to dispatch. This may include ex-

tensive Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) in preparation

for delivery of the project. Next we send out a team of

commissioning engineers on location to supervise the

construction and start-up of the plants. Our depart-

ment is involved in all areas from advice to implemen-

The commissioning engineers at Elster-Instromet travel

the globe to assist with the implementation of gas

metering stations. Sometimes they’re away from home

for up to eight months. At other times they respond

rapidly to a location for a critical maintenance task.

Wherever they work they are involved in preparation

and maintenance as well as providing feedback for

project engineers. They will also train your staff to keep

the plants well maintained. They have these skills be-

cause they not only have intrinsic knowledge, but also

the necessary practical experience from around the

globe. They also fully understand the importance of

perfect metering.

Doing what we do well on location Traveling to the various locations is not what it

used to be. A host of security regulations and

check-in procedures force you from queue to

queue. Yet these trips are critical for starting-

up our plants and performing maintenance.

Once we’re on- site we can get down to what we do

well. Start-up, test, delivery and transfer.

There have been many great projects, for example, set-

ting up a custody transfer location in Switzerland for gas

import from Germany and part-export to Italy: Setting-

up six metering stations in Abu Dhabi, at the start of the

pipeline which then branches out across the country: In

India with 11 metering stations, at the start of the pipe-

line, with various branches to power stations. These pro-

jects have a throughput between one and seven million

cubic meters of gas per hour. That demands metering

accuracy. One tenth of a percent deviation in data has

enormous ramifications.

Going on-line is still a memorable moment for everyone.

What may have taken months or years, starting with a

quotation, is mostly finished. It is generally followed by a

commissioning party and then the pressure is off for us

and we can enjoy a celebratory party with our clients.
