Multiplying Integers

W ords NumbersThe product of two positive integers ispositive. If the signs are the same, the

The product of two negative integers ispositive. If the signs are the same, the

pr o duct is p o sitive.-4(-5) = 20

The product of a positive integer and anegative integer is negative. If the signsare di ff erent, the pr o duct is negative. 2(-8) = -16



M ultiplying I ntegers:Example 1:

integer is negative.




H igh and Low Tide In the bay of Fundy there areabout 6 hours between each high and low tide.Suppose that the water level decreases at a rate of about 4 feet per hour during this time. What is thechange in the water level?




Evaluate the expressi o n when m = 5 and n = -8

a. -mn =(-1)( 5)(-8) = 40

Substitute 5 for m and -8 for n .
