MATH TODAY.1) H ave a seat in your area and get out your HW from last time, 11.3 (EVENS and #31).W e will go over this in a few minutes.2) In your math notebook, work on theproblems below.
1) -2 - 12 = 2) 6 - (-2) =
3) -14 - (-6) = 4) -24 - (-14 )=
5) Sunday afternoon in Sai Kung the
temperature was 18 degrees celsius. ByMonday morning, the temperature was 6degrees celsius. W hat was the change intemperature?

Multiplying Integers - ActivityYo u can use additi o n t o understand integer multiplicati o n.
Step 1Copy and completethe table.
Step 2
Describe the patternof the results. Usethe pattern to find 4(-
3).
Step 3Copy the table at the right.
Step 4
Tell what you observeabout the product of twointegers with the samesign / with different signs.
Product Repeated Addition Result
4 * 2 = 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 =
4 * 1 = 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 =

Key Concept -- For Your Notebook :
Multiplying Integers
W ords NumbersThe product of two positive integers ispositive. If the signs are the same, the
pr o duct is p o sitive.
3(5) = 15
The product of two negative integers ispositive. If the signs are the same, the
pr o duct is p o sitive.-4(-5) = 20
The product of a positive integer and anegative integer is negative. If the signsare di ff erent, the pr o duct is negative. 2(-8) = -16

M ultiplying I ntegers:Example 1:
a. -7(-4) = 28The product of twonegative integers ispositive.
b. 8(-6) = -48The product of a positiveinteger and a negative
integer is negative.

H igh and Low Tide In the bay of Fundy there areabout 6 hours between each high and low tide.Suppose that the water level decreases at a rate of about 4 feet per hour during this time. What is thechange in the water level?

M ultiplying I ntegers:Example 3:
Evaluate the expressi o n when m = 5 and n = -8
a. -mn =(-1)( 5)(-8) = 40
Substitute 5 for m and -8 for n .
The product of two negative
integers is positive.
b. n3
= ( -8)3
=(-8)(-8)(-8) =-512
Substitute -8 for n .
W rite the power as a product.
The product of three negativeintegers is negative.
