ME2027 - Process Planning and Cost EstimationINTERNAL I ANSWER KEY

    Date : 25.08.14

    Part - A

    1.

Define Work studyIt is a generic term for those techniques, particularly method study and work measurement,

which are used in the examination of human work in all its contexts, and which leadssystematically to the investigation of all the factors which affect the efficiency and economy of

the situation being reviewed, in order to affect improvements.

    2. What are the objectives of Method study?

To find the most economical way of doing the work.

To standardize the methods, materials, tools and equipment.

    3.

Brief the purpose of Work Measurement.

To determine the time required to do a job.

To estimate the man and machine requirements and to assess the plant capacity accurately.

    4.

What are the general rules to be followed in breaking down a task into elements?

Each element should be easily identifiable

Each element should be as short in duration as possible and can be timed accurately and

    reliably

    5. What is SIMO Chart?

SIMO chart is used to record, simultaneously on a common time scale, the activities of two

hands or other parts of workers body during the performance of a single cycle of

    operation being investigated.

    6.

Name any four important techniques used in method study.

Operation process chart (or) Outline process chart.

    Flow process chart.

    7.

    What is meant by Ergonomics?

Ergonomics is a scientific study that deals with the interactions between the human

beings, the tools and the equipment (machinery) and the working environment.

    8.

Define Process Planning and Write the approaches to process planning.Process planning can be defined as the systematic determination of the methods by which

a product is to be manufactured economically and competitively

    9.

What are the benefits of CAPP?

    Improved productivity

    Lower production cost

10.What are the machine selection parameters?

    Functional requirements

    Reliability

    Service life durability

    Part B

    11.

    (a) Method StudyMethod study is that part of work study which deals with systematic analysis and improvement of work

methods and systems through the application of innovative techniques to achieve better utilization of

    resources.

    11. (b) Time study Select the job to be studied.

(ii) Note all the details about the operations and the operator being studied.

(iii) Split the work cycle into suitable elements. An element is a distinct partof a job, selected

for convenience of observation, measurement and analysis. Any non-repetitive andoccasional element in the manufacturing cycle should be noted separately.

(iv) Determine the number of cycles required to be timed to get desired accuracy.

    (v) Observe and record the actual time taken by the operator for each element of the job.

(vi) Simultaneously rate or judge the pace of the operators performance.

(vii) Different time readings for each element are recorded on the record sheet.

(viii) Average time for each element is calculated after eliminating the abnormal values. (This is

    also called observed time.)

(ix) The observed time for every element multiplied by the corresponding rating factor(expressed in %) gives normal time or basic time.

Normal Time = Observed Time Rating Factor (%)12. (a) Operation Charts

    12. (b) Approaches to Process planning

13.(a) (i)Process planning The finished product is analyzed

    Prepare a Bill Of Materials

Decide which parts are to be manufactured

    Choose the appropriate blank size

(ii) Total Normal Time = 2.163 min

    Standard Time = 2.401 min

    13. (b)(i)Applications : * Design of instruments and controls

    * Design of workplace * Design of working environment

    13 (b) (ii) Total Normal time = 8.389 min

    Standard Time = 9.56 min
