Instrumentation Based Control Systems:
Controlling Processes using online, real-time BOD data
Who we are….• The development of the Proteus emerged from a Knowledge Transfer
Partnership between RS Hydro and the University of Birmingham; the aim was to develop a probe that was capable of measuring BOD in real-time.
• The result?
• A multi-parameter probe that uses fluorescence to monitor BOD, COD, TOC and Total coliforms (and variations there upon) in real-time.
Who we are
Technology behind the Proteus
• Different groups of organic matter have different known excitation and emission wavelengths – i.e when we excite at a specific wavelength of light it emits at another wavelength

Technology behind the Proteus
• Different groups of organic matter have different known excitation and emission wavelengths – i.e. when we excite at a specific wavelength of light it emits at another wavelength
• The Proteus uses ‘Tryptophan-like fluorescence’ (TLF) as part of an algorithm which includes compensation for temperature and turbidity to derive BOD.
Technology behind the Proteus
Case Study: Wastewater Treatment
Work (WWTW)
The need for control at WWTWs
• Relatively high energy costs
• Balance to maintain microbe level in ASP treatments
• Variable influent hydraulic & organic loads – daily, weekly, seasonal & storm-based variability
• Increasing pressure to minimise environmental damage with discharges & better Pollution Incidence Prevention
• Greater need for more operational efficiency within discharge limits
• Joined up smart network control with influent sewers
• Inflexible & mechanical operating regimes
But why BOD?
• Previously held back by 5 day waiting period to report results-Realtime BOD is a game-changer…
• Closest to replicating the natural oxidation and recovery conditions in aquatic systems
• Not as narrow as DO as it encompasses all oxygen consuming constituents of the wastewater – provides context
• Compliances set around BOD – 70-80% reduction – BOD is a far more effective measure of assessing whether or not water is ‘safe’ for discharge compared to Ammonia alone.
• Almost every WWTW worldwide has a permit for BOD5.
A landmark project…
• Proteus Instruments, in collaboration with a major UK water company’s innovation team, launched an unprecedented project to prove the Proteus’s capabilities of measuring BOD in real-time with the aim of using that to control their wastewater treatment processes & compliance discharges.
• Used the Proteus simultaneously with grab sampling for lab BOD assessment to provide a direct comparison and analysis

If you consider that BOD5 is probably +/-20% of reading at best +/- 1to2mg/l and that 80% of the readings are between 4-8mgl. This degree of correlation is extraordinary and is a real PLUS for the Proteus given this very small measurement range.

Data Observations & Findings
• Ammonia/BOD pattern
• Aeration control based on BOD is better than ammonia
• Potential cost saving for aeration compared to fixed speed
• Ensures greater process stability
• Optimise treatment to utilise consent limits more fully.
• Feed-Back or Feed-Forward approaches.
Data Observations and Findings
Small is beautiful….
• Don’t need to have to be PLC based systems...
• BOD is a parameter that has massive potential to control global WWTWs and environment
• Locations required often have no power.
• Solar based low powered systems (permanent or portable)
• SCADA ready systems using Cloud/API connections.
• True early warning systems based on direct measurement and not secondary parameters such as DO or ammonia.
• Allows users to identify potential problems long before process or ecosystem is out of control.
Small is beautiful
Case Study: Whisky Distillery
Previously tried a UV-VISsystem for 6 months – nocorrelation to BOD despitemanufacturer claims.
Peli-case containing telemetry unit and SDI-12 Converter with solar panel. Can be AC/DC powered.
Installed by client in 30mins
Data sent to cloud and connected to SCADA using API/xml
Very happy Environmental Manager
Whisky Distillery – Semi-permanent - SCADA
• Superb correlation given that sampling range was only 8-15mgl. Combined sample/lab accuracy is +/-20% of reading at best.
• Client was so impressed with data they requested 5 more systems within 24 hours generating their first report.
• Near real-time SCADA connection allows operators to control effluent discharges and ensure 100% compliance 24/7.
Whisky Distillery – Site calibration data
• The Proteus (patented) is pushing the boundaries of fluorescence technology and getting encouraging results
• We are still learning and developing with each new application
• The Proteus is already being used successfully around the globe
• BOD5 has its place but today presents a new era of real-time BOD; there are endless benefits to being able to now monitor BOD in real-time
Summary
• We have c.25 distributors appointed in last 12 months
• The Proteus has proved that it is more than capable of improving upon BOD5
• Already providing real-time protection for WWTWs & Environment across the globe.
