in Dmacc’s three-stage Video Production certificate, students will:

Utilize professional, state-of-the-art video equipment in a hands-on setting

Build fundamental skills needed to create web-based videos to grow a business.

Lay the foundation for employment in the video production industry found in every state, including Iowa.

Led by Hollywood film and television veteran Steve Schott, DMACC’s Video Production Certificate courses provide fundamental understanding of every element of video production—from developing an idea and planning a production to shooting video and editing.

Because courses cover all video disciplines—such as producing, camera operation, lighting, sound, working with actors, editing and more—the certificate program is also a great way for students to explore specializing in one area of production.

Video Production Certification in three stages

1. Learning the Tools grD480, Video Production i—Students will learn the proper use of cameras, lighting, lenses, sound and technology to create shots and digital video clips. Students will also learn the fundamentals of editing. A personal digital camera is required for this course; students will also be trained to operate professional-grade cameras.

2. Learning the TechniquesgrD481, Video Production ii—Learn to implement elements and principles of digital video production. Explore how to start from a basic concept to develop and produce short video segments for use in websites or other digital media. Emphasis will be placed on getting the concept from a raw idea to production using industry-standard software to produce and edit content. Prerequisite: GRD 480

3. Using Tools and Techniques to Create a Finished Product

grD482, Video Production iii—Examine the use of effective video techniques, wardrobe, acting, backgrounds and props. Instruction includes application of effective plots and plot structure to fit the message being communicated. Lab activities will emphasize getting the concept from a raw idea to production using industry-standard procedures and practices in production activities. Prerequisite: GRD 481

DMACC students learn from one of the best in the business in Steve

Schott, a veteran of more than 35 years of experience in production

and distribution of live theater, motion pictures and television projects,

including 15 years living and working in Hollywood.

Steve’s experience includes everything from feature films to network

television programs and 30-second national television ads. As a

producer, Steve oversees the entire production from creating ideas

to the finished product. He has negotiated thousands of contracts,

hired and managed thousands of people, and worked with budgets

ranging from a few thousand dollars to tens of millions of dollars.

Steve continues to produce projects as the President of Big Schott

Enterprises, Inc. Steve is a long-standing member of the Hollywood-

based Producers Guild of America (PGA).

Since moving to Iowa in 1993, Steve has worked on several in-state

projects, including commercials and feature films. Schott believes

there are many opportunities for full-time and freelance professional

work in the video production industry in Iowa. After 35 years, Steve

has decided to pass on his vast knowledge of the video business

to the next generation of up-and-coming video entrepreneurs and
