Instructions for examination of internship, internship report, and seminar for Advanced Internship D

The internship course is an important part of your education. The internship gives you an opportunity to integrate what you have learned during previous courses with the experience you will have at your internship. After completion of the course “Advanced Internship D” you should be able to:

•   apply the acquired advanced theoretical knowledge in the business subject area onto a relevant economic activity

•   independently plan, operate and implement a defined project or investigative work •   apply an advanced investigative method within one’s field on a practical problem •   act in an independent and constructive way at the work place in order to contribute to the

organization •   identify one’s own need of further knowledge and development of competence •   both orally and in writing present one’s internship tasks and one’s experience of the internship

Your achievement is shown in part by the actual tasks carried at the place of internship, in part by the written internship report of analyzing character submitted within two weeks after completion of the internship, and a seminar with oral presentation.

The written internship report is based on the experiences and reflections made during the whole internship period. It is important that you keep an ongoing documentation of the content, events and experiences of your internship, for instance in the format of a journal. The internship report shall comprise 15 pages and cover the following parts:

The internship report shall be structured using the headings described below. You decide on the specific content and what you want to focus on depending on the specifics of your internship and the events during it (see also the expected learning outcomes listed above!).

1.   Your contact information and the company’s/organization’s name and place of business (do not include detailed contact information in the report, this is submitted when you upload your report).

2.   Background information about the company/organization. This section should be of a narrative character and give a general overview of the organization’s history, operations, organization, market position, main areas of competence, strategies, culture, staff composition, etcetera.

3.   Your assignments during the internship and the projects/investigative work or similar that you have been involved with. Describe what you have been doing during the internship and how your assignments were carried out. Include information about working hours, scope, degree of independent work, involvement, relevance of assignments with regard to your education/major.

4.   Expectations and preparations. What expectations did you have prior to your internship and how did the internship meet our expectations? In what way did you prepare yourself for the internship?

5.   Self-reflection of your competence development. This section is the most important part of the report and should cover what you have learned and what use you believe this will have on your future studies and likely career career. Under this heading you have the possibility to reflect on your experience of your internship and relate this with your theoretical studies and future progress. Examples of questions that are important to cover are how and if you have been able to put your knowledge from your business education into practice in a real organization. What need for further competences/knowledge do you see and what are your plans for achieving them? What gaps or problems have you experienced when comparing what you have gained from your university studies and the internship? How can the university and internship benefit from each other?

Upload your internship report to USBE’s database Please note that your report should be uploaded to the database for internship reports: www.hh.umu.se/iframes/cas/intrep/iup.php When doing so you have to give your and the internship supervisor’s contact information, you should not give these details in your written internship report that is uploaded to the database. The internship report should include your name, your e-mail address and the internship company’s name and place of business so that other students may see where you did your internship and contact you if they have any questions.

The internship report is to be completed by all students taking the course Advanced Internship D and be uploaded/handed in to the internship coordinator within two weeks after completion of the internship.

Seminar One part of the examination is the oral presentation of the internship in a seminar. You will have 20 minutes for presentation of your internship where the last 5 minutes will be used for questions from the other seminar participants. In your presentation you should focus on points 3, 4, and 5 described above and you are expected to reflect upon your internship and your need for further knowledge and development of competence as identified by you after your internship.

Other The internship coordinator may be in contact with you during the internship either by visit to the place of business or by telephone, e-mail or web-meeting.
