VMware Fusion

• There are 3 different options for running Windows on a Mac at the Fuqua School of Business – VMware Fusion – Virtual Machine that runs alongside Mac

OS X – Parallels – Similar to VMware – Boot Camp – built into Mac OS X, requires Reboot

• VMware Fusion is the recommended option

Software Needed

• VMware Fusion 6 or 7 – Through OnTheHub website – Renewable One-Year trial version

• Microsoft Windows 7 Professional 32-bit – Lifetime license through the OnTheHub website

• Microsoft Office 2013 Professional Plus 32-bit – Lifetime license through the OnTheHub website

• Symantec End-Point Protection Anti-virus – Through oit.duke.edu website – Perpetual License

Installing VMware Fusion

• VMware Fusion is a Virtual Machine program that allows you to have a virtual computer running Windows while still booted to Mac OS X. As a student you receive a one year trial version of VMware that can be renewed using the same procedure for an additional year.

• To get your version of VMware Fusion visit: – http://dukeoit.onthehub.com/ – Use your [email protected] email address when checking

out – Copy the serial number from the Receipt page for use in

installing

Setting up Windows

• The next part of setting up VMware Fusion will be to install Windows, Office, and Anti-Virus software.

• Both Windows and Office are available from the OnTheHub website. – Just add them to the cart and checkout like you did with

VMware Fusion. Save the receipt page as a PDF since this is the only place where the product codes are saved.

– It is recommended to use 32-bit versions of Windows 7 Professional and Office 2013 for compatibility with resources

• Symantec End-Point Protection can be downloaded from OIT’s site.

Create a New Virtual Machine

• If the New Virtual Machine Wizard doesn’t automatically come up then select ‘New…’ from the File Menu

• Click the ‘Continue without disc’ button • Choose the ‘Use operating system installation disc image file’ option

• Select the ISO file for Windows 7 Professional 32-bit that was downloaded earlier (English_Windows_7_Professional_SP1_W32_X17-59183.img)

• Click ‘Continue’

Create a New Virtual Machine cont.

• Operating System ‘Microsoft Windows’ and Version ‘Windows 7’ should already be selected, click ‘Continue’

• Leave the check in the ‘Use Easy Install’ box and type in an account name ‘Admin’, copy and paste the product code from the OnTheHub receipt in the Windows Product Key box, change the drop down menu to ‘Windows 7 Professional’ and click ‘Continue’

• Choose ‘More Isolated’ and click ‘Continue’ • Put a check in the box for ‘Always open this virtual machine when VMware Fusion starts’ and click ‘Finish’

• Click ‘Save’

Installing Windows 7

• The Windows 7 installer will start in the virtual machine – Proceed with the default options of installing Windows 7 – The virtual machine will restart several times during the

installation process, this is normal • Once installed the ‘VMware Tools’ application should start automatically – Proceed with the default options for this install

Setup Shared Folders

• From the ‘Virtual Machine’ menu highlight ‘Sharing’ and choose ‘Sharing Settings’

• Flip the switch to ‘On’ for ‘Shared Folders’ • Click the ‘+’ symbol and choose your Home Folder (house icon) and click ‘Add’

• The ‘Z:/’ drive is now mapped to your Mac side and you’ll have access to anything in the Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Drop-Box folders through this drive. You should save all files to the ‘Z:/’ Drive so that Time Machine will back them up.

Disable Accelerated Graphics

• Shut the Virtual Machine down from the Windows 7 Start Menu

• From the ‘Virtual Machine’ menu select ‘Settings’ • Choose the ‘Display’ icon • Use the toggle switch to turn off ‘Accelerate 3D Graphics’ • Close the Virtual Machine Settings and choose ‘Start Up’ from the Virtual Machine Menu

Install Microsoft Office

• Run Setup.exe from Z:\’Home Folder’\Downloads\Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2013 32-bit (English)\ where ‘Home Folder’ is the name of your Mac user account

• Complete the Install and launch Microsoft Excel – Copying and paste the product code from the OnTheHub

receipts page earlier when you first launch Microsoft Excel. •  To help save space you can perform a custom install and deselect:

–  Microsoft OneNote, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Publisher, Microsoft SharePoint Workspace, Microsoft Visio Viewer

Install Symantec End-Point Protection

• Under the Windows 7 Virtual Machine open ‘SEP_12_1_4_WIN32.exe’ from the ‘Z:\’Home Folder’\Downloads\’ folder to start the installer

• Continue with the default options for the install
