EVP 270 is intended for houses/buildingswithwaterborne heating. A climate-controlled automatic shunt control unit ensures that the indoor module is always working as efficiently as possible.

System description

Principle of operation

EVP 270 is an electric boiler designed for houses with water-borne heating. The electric boiler consists of a pressure vessel,two immersion heaters and intelligent controls. The vessel’slower part contains a mixing chamber that provides the beststratification and temperature flux when docked to a heatpump.

Water is heated using a finned coil of copper.

The immersion heaters have a max output of 13.5 kW withthe option of setting lower outputs. The factory setting is10.5 kW.

The boiler temperature is variable, which provides economicaloperation and permits connection to high-temperature sys-tems.

The total water volume is 270 litres.

EVP 270 is delivered with a bivalent shunt so that the righttemperature is obtained in the heating system with big sav-

ings. The flow temperature is determined by the currentoutdoor temperature and settings.

When the electric boiler starts, all functions (immersionheaters, circulation pump and heating control system) areon. If the operating mode changes, the change is saved inthe memory so that the electric boiler will restart in the se-lected operating mode in the case of, for example, a powerfailure.

If the "Operating mode/reduce value" button is pushedin once, the circulation pump stops. (It starts up regularlyhowever.) If you press it one more time, the circulation pumpstarts and the immersion heater is blocked.

Pressing again blocks both the circulation pump and immer-sion heater. This mode is used when neither hot water norheating is required. Pressing one more time goes back tothe original mode (immersion heater and circulation pumpoperating).

The "Operating mode/reduce value" button is used toreduce the value on channels 8 and 9.

Room temperature

Heating control system

The indoor temperature depends on several factors. Duringthe summer season, solar radiation and heat given off bypeople and equipment are sufficient to keep the house warm.During this period, you can turn off the circulation pump(see section "The front panel’s lower (concealed) part", pointH, on page 5).

When it gets colder outside, the heating system must bestarted. The colder its gets, the hotter the radiators need tobe. This adjustment is automatic, however the boiler mustfirst be given the correct default settings (see the section"Default setting").

Default setting

Use the “Select heating curve” knob and the"Heating curve offset" knob for making default settings.

If you do not know what settings to enter, use the basicvalues from the map opposite.

If the required room temperature is not obtained, re-balan-cing may be necessary.

Note! Wait one day between settings so that the temperat-ures have time to stabilise.

Post-balancing adjustment of the default setting.

Cold weather conditions

If the room temperature is too low, turn the “Selectheating curve” knob one step clockwise.

If the room temperature is too high, turn the “Selectheating curve” knob one step anti-clockwise.

Warm weather conditions

If the room temperature is too low, turn the “Heatingcurve offset” knob one step clockwise.

If the room temperature is too high, turn the “Heatingcurve offset” knob one step anti-clockwise.

Changing the room temperature manually

If you want to temporarily or permanently lower or raise theindoor temperature relative to the temperature set previously,

turn the “Heating curve offset” knob anti-clockwise orclockwise, respectively. One mark represents approximatelyone (1) degree change in the room temperature.

NOTE! An increase in the room temperature may be inhibitedby radiator or floor heating thermostats – for this reason theymust be turned up.

Setting of hot water temperature

The boiler temperature is set at 50°C.

This normally provides a good combination of savings andcomfort.

If you want to increase the hot water capacity (comfort level),raise the temperature in the upper section of the boiler.

If you want the heat pump to provide an even greater pro-portion of the heating, you should reduce the temperaturein the upper part of the boiler. This reduces the comfort level,but increases savings.

These settings are done in channel 9.

Setting of time

Resetting of clock

By pressing a thin pin into the hole (R), you can reset theclock and delete all its programmed in data. A reset is gener-ally performed when starting up/commissioning the system,or after a power failure/disconnection.

Setting of time

Press the key.ON/OFF indication on the clock’s LCD willfade.

Holding down the key to step through the hours. Releasethe key when the hour you want is displayed.

Set the minutes by brief short presses of the key.

The day of the week is set by pressing the “Day" key re-peatedly until the day you want is displayed. Wait until theclock’s ON/OFF indicator is lit again, 5 seconds after the lastkey press. When the correct time and date have been pro-grammed in, the clock functions can be programmed (seeProgramming the clock).

Programming of clock

This programming is done to determine what times nightreduction is to be activated. The clock is programmed asfollows:

Press the “Day” key until the day you want it shown inthe display.

Program the time you want the night reduction to startby pressing the keys placed around the clock display. Thenumbers around the display mark out the 24 hours of aday.

One press: Night reduction activated the full hour.

Two presses: Night reduction activated in the first half hour.

Three presses: Night reduction activated in the second halfhour.

Four presses: Night reduction deactivated the full hour.

Select a new day with the “Day” key, and repeat theprevious procedure.

When programming is complete, press the “Day” key onthe actual day.

The chronometer can also be programmed in 15-minute in-tervals.

Begin by selecting the half hour during which you want 15-minute activation.

Press and hold down the same segment key again. In thismode, press the “15” key to select the 15-minute intervalyou want.

The clock can also be adjusted manually (not normally used).This is done as follows:

Press and hold down the key for 3 seconds. The relaywill then switch off and OFF will start to flash.

Press the key and the relay will toggle between offand on while ON/OFF flashes.

To return to clock control, press the key again andhold it down for 3 seconds. ON/OFF will now glow con-stantly.

In the case of a power failure/disconnection, the clock retainsits setting for a couple of days.

Night reduction

This setting is used to change the heating during certainperiods during the day and night.

Night reduction is activated by the clock. The “Clock control”position is the normal position, and is selected using the“Clock”/”Increase value” button.

The programmed on/off times in the clock determine whattimes the flow temperature is to change in order to give achange in the room temperature. ON indicates that nightmode is on. OFF indicates that night mode is off.

Select channel 8, Night reduction using the “Channel” but-ton. To reduce the temperature, reduce the value with the"–" button (concealed behind the upper front access panel).To raise the room temperature, press the "+" button. Thesetting range is -10 to +10. One step gives the equivalent ofa 1 degree change in the room temperature.

NOTE! An increase in the room temperature may be inhibitedby radiator or floor heating thermostats – for this reason theymust be turned up.

If you want to temporarily or more permanently change theroom temperature, besides manually turning the clock on/off,you can use the “Clock” button. This button toggles between“Always day”, “Always night” and “Clock control”. See thesection "Functions on the front panel" on page 4.

Night reduction via external contact

If you want to activate the night reduction via an externalcontact instead of using the clock, you can do so by doingthe following changeover:

Maintenance routinesThe boiler requires some regular maintenance. Please followthe points below.

Checking the safety valves

EVP 270 ,must be provided with two safety valves when in-stalled; one for the heating system and one for the waterheater.

The heating system’s safety valve must be completely tight,but the water heater’s safety valve may occasionally releasesome water after hot water has been used. This is becausethe cold water, which enters the water heater to replace thehot water, expands when heated causing the pressure torise and the safety valve to open.

The safety valves must be checked regularly. Check as fol-lows:

Open the valve.

Check that water flows through the valve.

Close the valve again.

Check the pressure. If the pressure is too low, top up theboiler water.

Control of the heat pump

We recommend regular checks of the heat pump’s status,since disruptions to the normal operation of the heat pumpwill not result in any changes in the perceived comfort level,as immersion heater mode will automatically take over.

Pressure gauge is to show the pressure in the heating system.See section “Commissioning and balancing" on page 21.

In a closed system, the pressure varies with changes in tem-perature in the boiler and heating system – high temperatureswill increase pressure. Do not add water before the pressurehas stabilised at a level lower than the expansion vessel’sinitial pressure (normally 0.5 bar).

In an open system, the pressure depends on the height dif-ference between the expansion vessel and the boiler (forexample, 5 m corresponds to roughly 0.5 bar).

Transport and storage

The electric boiler should be transported and stored verticallyin a dry place.

Assembly

The electric boiler is ideally located in a utility room or boilerroom. The unit can be levelled using the adjustable feet.

If pipes are to be laid inside an internal wall that backs ontoa bedroom or living room, do not use clamp rings.

Inspection of the installation

Current regulations require that the heating installation isinspected before it is commissioned. The inspection must becarried out by a suitably qualified person and should bedocumented. The above applies to closed heating systems.The boiler may not be replaced without the installation beinginspected again.

Setting of min/max temperature levels

On delivery, the boiler, and also the finned coil have a setminimum temperature of 50°C. This level is adjustablebetween 40 and 90°C. You set this level on channel 9 usingthe increase/decrease buttons. Where the flow’s calculatedtemperature level is higher than the boiler’s set minimumlevel, the boiler temperature is automatically raised to thecalculated level. The temperature in the finned coil increasesat the same rate as the boiler temperature increases. Withthe help of a mixer valve (not supplied), you can set theoutgoing hot water temperature.

The upper temperature of the boiler can also be limited. Thisis done using the potentiometer (62) on the printed circuitcard(41) that is located behind the internal cover place behindthe front access panel. The temperature level is set in 5 de-gree steps between 60 and 90°C and can be read duringsetting and later controls/maintenance, on channel 16.

Channels 11 to 22 are service channels. These channels be-come accessible by changing the value from 0 to 1 underchannel 10.

When you press the button more times you come to channel11 and the subsequent channels. After around 20 minutesor by changing the value 1 to 0 under channel 10, the controlpanel goes back to displaying only channels 1 to 10.

In some cases, you might need to be able to set upper andlower limits for the flow temperature. You do this using theincrease/decrease buttons under channel 12 for minimumand channel 13 for maximum flow temperatures.

Start and stop of a heat pump (if used) is balanced onchannels 20-22 (see channel descriptions).

Setting of docking thermostat

The docking thermostat default setting is 51° C. To preventoperating disturbances this value may need adjusting, be-cause the outdoor air heat pump produces a high output athigh outdoor temperatures. For F20XX 8 kW, we recommenda setting of 51 °C and for F20XX 10 kW 50 °C.

Connection

Pipes are to be installed in accordance with the applicableheating and hot water standards. Internal support bushesshould be fitted when annealed steel or copper pipe is used.

The shunt is equipped with compression ring couplings.

The overflow pipe form the safety valves is to run to a floordrain so that hot water will not splash out when the valvesare checked or the boiler is vented. The overflow pipe mustslope downwards along its entire length to prevent waterpockets forming and must be frost-proofed. The outlet ofthe overflow pipe should be conspicuous.

The hot water circuit must be fitted with a mixer valve if aboiler temperature over 65°C is permitted in order to preventscalding. The supplied check valve is to be mounted in thecharge circuit to prevent natural circulation.

EVP 270 can be connected to an open or closed expansionvessel.

If the heating system is equipped with an open expansionvessel, the distance between the highest radiator and theexpansion vessel may not be less than 2.5 m.

into a horizontal position (against stop lugs on either side ofthe front panel).

Connection

NOTEElectrical installation and service must be carried outunder the supervision of a qualified electrician. Electric-al installation and wiring must be carried out in accord-

ance with the stipulations in force.

Disconnect the electric boiler before testing the insulationof the house/building wiring.

NOTEThe switch (8) must not be moved from position -"0"until the boiler has been filled with water. Otherwisethe temperature limiter, thermostat and immersion

heater may be damaged.

The electric boiler is connected to the hanging cable via anisolator switch with a minimum breaking gap of 3 mm. Whenthe building is equipped with an earth-fault breaker theelectric boiler should be equipped with a separate one.

The nominal output is controlled via contactors operated bya microprocessor.

Temperature limiter

The temperature limiter (6) cuts off the power supply to theimmersion heaters if the temperature rises to between 90and 100°C, and can be manually reset by pressing the buttonon the temperature limiter.

NOTEReset the temperature limiter, it may have tripped

during transport.

The automatic heating control system, and circulation pump(16) and its cabling are internally fused with a miniature cir-cuit breaker (MCB) (7) and fine-wire fuse (33) on the relaycard (29).

Resetting the temperature limiter

The temperature limiter (6) is accessible from behind thefront access panel and is located to the left of the panel.

The temperature limiter is reset by firmly pressing in its but-ton.

Connecting the outside sensor

The outdoor sensor (15) must be placed in a shaded locationon a wall facing north or north-west where it will not be af-fected by the morning sun, for example. The sensor must beconnected by two-wire to (14) pos "+" and "-" on theprinted circuit card (41).

Cable ducts must be sealed so that they do not cause con-densation which could result in erroneous sensor values.

The minimum cable cross section should be 0.4 mm2 up to50 m, e.g. EKXX or LiYY.

The electric boiler EVP 270 is internally equipped with a loadmonitor. The control system must be set for the building’smain fuse so that the load monitor can work correctly. Thisis done using the knob (60), marked “Fuse” on the circuitboard (41), which is positioned behind the middle frontcover. The supplied current sensor (20) is connected to theterminal block’s terminals marked “Current sensor”. TerminalC is the common conductor for the three current sensors.

When the load monitor senses an excess current in any ofphase, the upper immersion heater will step down its outputuntil it can be connected in again.

Cable type: Unscreened LiYY, screened LiYCY.

Cable area: At least 2 x 0.25 mm2 for lengths up to 50m.

Centralised load control/Tariff

Where centralised load control or tariff control is used, thiscan be connected to the terminal block (14) labelled “Cent-ralised load control/Tariff on the printed circuit card (41).

If the lower immersion heater (24) of 4.5 kW is to be discon-nected, a function with potential-free contact is connected(functions with contacts that do not receive voltage fromanother source) between "-" and "B" on terminal block (14).

When the upper immersion heater (1) is to be disconnected,a potential-free contact is connected between “6” and “7”on terminal block (14).

If the entire output is to be disconnected, connect a potential-free contact between "-", "A" and "B" on terminal block(14).

Docking

General

EVP 270 can be installed in several different ways. The requis-ite safety equipment must be installed in accordance withcurrent regulations for all docked options.

EVP 270 may be docked to an outdoor air heat pump withmaximum output of 10 kW.

EVP 270 docked to F20XX

Pipe docking

Connect F20XX flow line to EVP 270's docking connection(75).

A control valve is to be fitted on the return pipe to balancethe charge flow. The supplied check valve is to be mountedin the charge circuit to prevent natural circulation.

Connect heat pump return line to EVP 270's docking connec-tion (76).

EVP 270 controls stop/start of the compressor in F20XX viathe docking thermostat.

When the docking thermostat (94) is active, a red lamp glowsin the channel select button (18).

Connect as shown in the figure below.

Suitable cable is 4 x 0.22 – 0.25, LiYY or LiYCY.

The charge pump between EVP 270 and F20XX is electricallysupplied from F20XX. This is to prevent frost damage atoutdoor temperatures under 0°C.

Accessories required

The upper immersion heater works to the set temperatureon channel 09. The lower immersion heater is blocked bythe heat pump until the heat pump is stationary.

If the outdoor air temperature drops to a level below the setvalue under channel A7, compressor operation is blocked

and all heating is provide by an external supplementaryheater. This function is also activated when F20XX is withoutpower.

Electrical connection EVP 270

To control EVP 270's immersion heater, a cable must beconnected to the electric boiler's terminal block (14) terminals"-" and "B", tariff/centralised load control. Connect thecable to terminal X201 (stationary NO and COM) inF2020/2025 and terminal X6 in F2026. Suitable cable is 4 x0.22 – 0.25, LiYY or LiYCY. The EVP 270's immersion heatercan also be blocked manually.

When the outdoor temperature drops, the entire heatingrequirement will need to be supplied by EVP 270.

On delivery, the boiler and indirectly also the water heaterhave a set minimum temperature of 50°C. The dockingthermostat’s current value can be read on channel 20.

Electrical connections EVP 270

EVP 270 controls the starting and stopping of the compressorin the heat pump.

When the docking thermostat (94) is active, a red lamp glowsin the channel select button (18).

The screw terminal block (22) positions 1-2 close when thetemperature is reached and screw terminal block (22) posi-tions 1-3 open when the temperature is reached.

Lay suitable cable and connect to the heat pump’s controlunit.

When the boiler is docked to the heat pump the lower im-mersion heater must be blocked. A potential free closingcontact is connected to the electric boiler terminal block (14)terminal "-" and "B", tariff/centralised load control. Thepotential free contact must be operated by the heat pumpcontrol system, for example the control signal fro cold outsideair / downtime. The EVP 270's immersion heater can also beblocked manually.

On delivery, the boiler water sensor is set to 50°C. Set theheat pump’s docking temperature to the required value inthe service menu on channel 21. The connection differentialfor the docking temperature is set on channel 22. The currentdocking temperature can be read on channel 20.

If EVP 270 is docked to another heat source, the chargepump can be connected to terminal block X11 (23) positions"5" and "6".

NOTE! The heat pump’s circulation pump is to operating toprevent the formation of ice in the pipes that are outdoors.

Preparations

Check that switch (8) is in “0” position and that the temper-ature limiter (6) has not tripped (press the button firmly).

Filling

It is best to fill the boiler via a fixed/permanent filling line tothe expansion vessel or a hose in the drain valve.

! WARNING!If filling is via the radiator circuit, the shunt valve mustbe in position 10. Otherwise there is a risk of bursting

one of the radiators.

Venting the heating systemBleed the air from the electric boiler through the safetyvalve and the rest of the heating system through itsventing valves.

Keep topping up and venting until all air has been re-moved and the correct pressure has been obtained.

Start-up and inspection1. Check that there is sufficient water and the system has

been vented.

2. Switch on the safety switch.

3. Check that all incoming phases are powered.

4. Check that the MSB (7) is on.

5. Check that the temperature limiter (6) has not beentripped during transport.

6. Switch on the control switch (8).

7. Check that the values for the boiler temperature, flowtemperature and outdoor temperature are appropriate(channels 1-3).

8. Adjust the slope of the curve and heating curve offsetaccording to the needs of the building (channels 6-7).Continue with the following points if EVP 270 isdocked to a heat pump.

9. Check that the red lamp glows in the Channel selectbutton, as this indicates that the docking thermostat isactive.

10. Follow the commissioning and maintenance instructionsfor the heat pump.

11. Check that that lower immersion heat is not blocked.

12. Balance the charge flow between the heat pump andelectric boiler.

13. Set max return temperature on the heat pump to 50 °C.

14. if EVP 270 is docked to a 10 kW heat pump the stoptemperature must be adjusted down to max 50 °C inchannel 21.

Adjustment, charge flow F20XX

For F20XX-8 kW, the charge flow must be a minimum of0.22 l/s and max 0.3 l/s

For F20XX-10 kW, the charge flow must be a minimum of0.27 l/s and max 0.37 l/s

The charge flow can be balanced using the heat pump’s flowand return pipe temperatures.

The difference between Channel T2 (flow temperature)) andchannel T3 (return temperature) is adjusted using the circu-lation pump and control valve. Adjustment is made whenthe flow temperature is approx. 45 °C and at stable opera-tion, 5 minutes after start-up or 5 minutes after defrost.

The temperature difference shall be as in the diagram below.At outdoor temperatures above 28ºC the flow can be in-

creased by 30 % to obtain a lower ΔT.

Secondary adjustment

Air is initially released from the hot water and venting maybe necessary. If gurgling sounds can be heard from theelectric boiler, the entire system will require venting. Whenthe system is stable (correct pressure and all air eliminated)the automatic heating control system can be set as required.See the section "Heating control system" on page 6 and"Front panel" on page 4.

Draining the heating system

The boiler/radiator water can be drained off through thedrain valve (51) using an R15 (1/2") hose coupling. Remove

the cap (80) from the valve. Now screw on the hose couplingand open the drain valve.

The heating system’s safety valve is set to open to allow airinto the system.

NOTEBefore the boiler/radiator water is drained out, the

voltage feed must be stopped.

EVP 270 is equipped with an outside controlled heatingcontrol system. This means the flow temperature is regulatedin relation to the current outdoor temperature.

The relationships between outdoor temperature and the flowtemperature is set using the “Select heating curve” and“Heating curve offset” knobs.

The diagram is based on the dimensioned outdoor temperat-ure in the area and the dimensioned supply temperature ofthe heating system. When these two values ”meet”, theheating control's curve coefficient can be read.

“Heating curve offset” is then set. A suitable value for under-floor heating is -1 and for radiator systems -2.

Since the water is heated in the finned loop at the same timeas it is used, the volume of hot water is dependent on theflow through the coil. This means that a greater volume ofhot water can be drawn off at a low flow rate. If a high flowrate of hot water is required, the boiler temperature can beincreased on channel 9. The available volume of hot watercan be read from the graph.

Dealing with malfunctionsIn the event of a malfunction or disruption to normal operation, first check the points below:

Low temperature or no hot waterLarge amounts of hot water were used.

Circuit or main MCB tripped.

Possible earth circuit-breaker tripped.

Mixer valve set too low.

Switch (8) set to “0”.

Tripped Miniature circuit-breaker (7) or Fine-wire fuse(35). See section ”Resetting of miniature circuit breakers”on page 26.

In "Standby" the boiler’s electronic control system isdisconnected and the display screen will be off.

The immersion heaters are controlled by a separate thermo-stat. Available output in standby mode is 6 kW.

The automatic heating control system is not operating, somanual shunt operation is required. This is done by pressingin the shunt motor knob and then turning it to the requiredposition. The maximum temperature on the standby modethermostat must be set during installation, taking into ac-count the heating system’s maximum permitted operatingtemperature.

NOTEWhen returning to normal mode, do not forget to resetthe shunt knob to its original position by turning the

knob all the way out.

with all correspondence with NIBE.

The MCB (7) is accessible from behind the front access paneland is located to the left of the panel.

Normal mode for the MCB is “1” (up).

Control of the heat pump

We recommend regular checks of the heat pump’s status,since disruptions to the normal operation of the heat pumpwill not result in any changes in the perceived comfort level,as immersion heater mode will automatically take over.

F20XX is equipped with a contactor for external indicationof common alarms. The function becomes active with alltypes of existing alarms. Max load for relay contactor is 250V2A.

Fine-wire fuse

The automatic heating control system, circulation pump (16)and its cabling, are internally fuse protected with a miniaturecircuit breaker (7) as well as a fine-wire fuse (35) on the relaycard (29).

The fine-wire fuse may only be replaced after the fault hasbeen repaired/fixed.

Glass tube fuse 2.5 A, 5 x 20 mm.
