Inspiring personal ambition and success

principal aimsSeaford College is a co-educational independent day and

boarding school, situated in an unrivalled position, amid 400

acres of rolling parkland in the heart of West Sussex.

The College is located away from the distractions of city life,

yet is still within easy reach of cultural and commercial centres,

in an inspirational environment which nurtures academic

excellence, sporting success and creative talent.

With just over 600 pupils aged from 7 – 18, Seaford is a caring

community in which relationships are based on mutual respect

and students are given a strong sense of belonging.

The College seeks to foster achievement and students are

encouraged to work consistently to the best of their ability and to take

full advantage of the excellent range of facilities the school has to offer.

We believe each student is an individual and we aim to provide for the

widest range of needs; we encourage students to fulfil their academic

potential and to participate in a wealth of cultural, social and sport-

ing activities to develop new skills, interests and leadership qualities.

Whatever their chosen path, Seaford College aims to prepare

young people for adult life so that they have the personal skills,

confidence and enthusiasm to be successful.

spirit & communityIt’s often said that school days are the happiest of your life

and here, at Seaford College, we try to ensure that’s most

definitely the case!

A family atmosphere in Seaford College Preparatory School ensures

our younger students feel safe and secure away from home, while

our highly successful peer mentoring scheme means there is always

someone for students to turn to in times of trouble.

The College is a close-knit community where pupils are nurtured

and encouraged to make the most of every opportunity.

Many friendships formed at Seaford are for life and the College

has a thriving alumni – the Society of Old Seafordians (SoOS).

pastoral care Pastoral care is an important

element of Seaford College’s success. All boarding houses have experienced

house-parents who develop close links with their students, providing practical

assistance as well as emotional support.

The College has an on-site medical centre, with a resident school nurse,

and access to a local GP, who is available on a daily basis by appointment.

The College also has its own Chaplain, who again is a regular visitor to the

school and is able to offer counselling, along with members of the school’s

peer mentoring team.

Seaford College has a dedicated Learning Support Centre, where dyslexic

students receive the very best encouragement and support, using the latest

teaching methods, and the College prides itself on drawing the best out of

each and every student.

Seaford is a mainstream school that provides for dyslexic students better than

any other school of its type.

community events Seaford College

is committed to charity work and helping the wider community. We encourage

all students to become involved in a range of fund-raising activities and

community projects from an early age.

It is always rewarding to see students come forward with their own ideas and to

witness the enthusiasm they are able to generate among their friends and

families for raising money!

As well as supporting numerous local charities - such as the Snowdrop

Trust, Macmillan Cancer Relief and Dreams Come True - via a wide range of

fund-raising events, the school sponsors two children overseas and works with

local charities who send clothing and supplies to underprivileged countries in

the third world.

Students who follow the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme can submit their

charitable and community work towards their award.

spiritual Seaford College was founded on strongly-held

Christian principles but, in today’s multi-cultural society, accepts there is a place

for all faiths and beliefs.

The College has its own Chapel, which houses a congregation of 150, and which

is in regular use for assemblies and special services. We also have our own

Chaplain, who visits the school on a regular basis, assists with assemblies and

conducts services in the Chapel.

Confirmation classes are held for those students who wish to affirm their faith and

Confirmation services are held annually in the College Chapel.

Staff and students at Seaford live and work in

close harmony, striving to develop well-rounded

individuals who have ambition, courage and

confidence, but also empathy and compassion

for others. For years, Seaford College has

been providing children aged 7-18 with the

very best that an independent education can

offer and today has an excellent record for

academic achievement, sport, art and music.

A carefully thought-out curriculum, combining

academic studies with vocational experience,

outdoor pursuits, charitable works and a great deal of enjoyment, provides each individual with what

they will find most valuable and useful – and a sound platform upon which to build their future hopes

and aspirations.

The broad-based curriculum offers 24 subjects at GCSE and more than 28 to choose from at A-level.

Although the College is housed primarily in magnificent Grade 2 listed premises, we are constantly

adding new buildings and improving existing facilities to keep apace of modern learning needs.

A recently-opened state-of-the art maths and science block offers the latest technologies and

facilities for students in purpose-built, light and airy classrooms, all with interactive whiteboards and

wi-fi technology, while our new Music School has facilities second-to-none, for composing, practicing,

performing and recording.

Seaford College Prep Choosing

the right Prep School is a very important decision for all parents and Seaford

College provides a thriving and friendly environment where every child is

treated as an individual. Seaford College Preparatory School (7-13 years)

is an integral part of Seaford College with its own buildings, playground

and corporate organisation. We firmly believe that a confident and happy

child will be a successful learner and participator. Our policy of continuous

investment in the school and its facilities ensure that the children have an

outstanding environment in which to achieve.

In Years 3, 4 and 5 the majority of lessons are taught by Form Teachers with

subjects such as Music, French, PE/Games and Design & Technology taught

by specialist staff. From Year 6 upwards all subjects are taught by specialist

subject staff, many of whom also teach in the Senior School. We aim to nurture

a love of learning through a broadly based curriculum and classroom activities

are often complemented by day and residential trips. A Special Educational

Needs Coordinator oversees the school’s learning support provision and this

further enhances learning and achievement.

The School offers a varied and wide range of extra-curricular activities including

sport, music and drama. Music has a valued place in school life and children

have the opportunity to learn wind, string or brass instruments, playing in

group ensembles together with School orchestras. All of the Senior School

facilities are available to the Prep School, including full use of the playing

fields, astro pitch, sports hall and swimming pool. Our sports teams regularly

compete against schools from across the South East of England.

Success in Seaford College Prep School is based firmly on the individual

pastoral care given to all pupils. All children in Years 3, 4 and 5 are assigned

a Form Teacher while Years 6, 7 and 8 have a Form Tutor. Great emphasis is

placed on regular communication between staff and parent through parents’

consultations and informal social occasions.

With our extended day facilities and flexible boarding arrangements, we aim

to provide a warm and caring home from home atmosphere to suit the needs

of pupils and their parents.

seniors Students post-13 follow a curriculum tailored to their

needs; the usual academic subjects are supplemented by religious education,

personal, social and health education (PHSE), citizenship, classics and careers.

An imaginative Key Stage 4 curriculum encourages students to develop

personal qualities, the ability to work as part of a team, tackle problems and

show initiative.

Seaford College pupils flourish in a positive learning environment with high

quality teaching and first-rate facilities.

Our capacity to inspire pupils’ imaginations and intellectual ambition has been

strengthened by the addition of 21st century facilities for music, IT, maths and science.

Understanding the challenges of leadership is an invaluable lesson for later

life and students are encouraged to participate in a wide range of activities

which will stretch their potential, as well as their minds. A comprehensive

extra-curricular programme gives students the opportunity to push the

boundaries of their capabilities and grow into mature, well-rounded individuals

able to make a valuable contribution to the society in which they live.

Seaford’s strength for many years has lain in the

field of creative arts.

We believe that each child has a creative talent

and they are encouraged to participate in song

and dance, music in all its forms, and drama, from

Junior School level through to Sixth Form.

Seaford Prep School holds regular concerts where

pupils are able to perform everything from po-

etry to piano; at the other end of the scale, the

annual Seafordstock – an idea formulated by a

former student – provides an opportunity for

budding rock musicians and singers to showcase

their musical and vocal talent!

Past pupils have gained music scholarships to

some of the nation’s leading music schools, as well

as Oxford and Cambridge, while numerous others

have gone on to study art, textiles and design at all

the major Art Colleges in the UK.

music Music plays a large part in life at Seaford College and

the Chapel Choir is regularly invited to sing at venues throughout London

and the South East.

As well as offering instrumental and singing tuition, the College also

encourages its many enthusiastic rock musicians.

Such is the enthusiasm and musical creativity of our students that there

are sufficient bands in the College to host our own annual rock festival –

Seafordstock – which provides a platform for a wide range of musical tastes

and abilities.

The College has produced a number of outstanding musicians in recent

years, ranging from organists to opera singers.

Its Music School, constructed in an historic stable block and surrounding

a courtyard performance arena, includes a state-of-the-art recording studio,

individual teaching and practice rooms, a computer room, keyboard room,

spacious performance venues and a sound-proofed band practice room.

“Seaford College gave me the chance to grow in confidence and my eyes were opened to the possibilities of pursuing a career in music, through the enthusiasm and dedication of the staff.”

Matthew Rose, International opera singer, trained at Covent Garden. Pupil at Seaford College from 1991 – 1996.

drama The College has an enthusiastic drama department and students

regularly attain Distinction and Merit level in their LAMDA examinations.

The College stages at least one major production each year, where pupils

are encouraged to take part not only on stage, but also behind the scenes,

building props, working on scene shifting and lighting, producing and directing.

As well as taking part in the general school production, advanced students stage their own

Sixth-form play, always a huge hit with the rest of the school and parents.

Full advantage is taken of the school’s proximity to Chichester, with its famous

Festival Theatre, and to London, where our students are fortunate in being able to see some of

Britain’s finest works on stage.

art & design Seaford College has long been

recognised as a centre of excellence for art and design.

A specialist Art library and large exhibition gallery are incorporated into

the purpose-built Arts Faculty, which offers options in fine art, photography,

textiles, graphics and ceramics as well as design and technology.

Enviable facilities include three large studios, a print-making area, equipped

for silk-screen, relief-printing and etching, a ceramics room and a darkroom for

black and white and colour processing.

The gallery is in constant use and is regularly opened to the public to

showcase students’ work.

The DT department incorporates two workshops which enable students

to explore a range of processes and materials, while a state-of-the-art

electronics room enables them to build and test electronic circuitry in a safe,

controlled environment.

The College has enjoyed great success in the Greenpower Electric Car Races

for Schools, having built and raced six eye-catching vehicles, one of which won

the prize for the most aerodynamic design.

A graphics suite not only houses specialist drawing tables but also

computers with access to the latest in computer graphics and

image-manipulations tools, ensuring students are up to date with all

the latest CAD and CAM technology.

Students who display a talent for developing unusual and imaginative ideas

can frequently be found absorbed in their work, putting in extra time and

effort out of regular school hours!

“Seaford has the great ability to bring the best out of people to produce well rounded students and, for me, it was the perfect school. The CCF taught leadership and discipline while the staff were always supportive. People skills are crucial - if you can talk to people and are hard working you can do anything. Although I am designer I still have to lead people in my role. Seaford shows you how to do this. My housemaster told me to work smart not just hard - I still keep reminding myself of that even today.”

Oliver Blackwell – inventor of the world’s first drumless washing machine, the WashDryIron, winner of Daily Mail Ideal Home Show ‘Concept for Living’ award in 2006 (previously won by James Dyson). Pupil at Seaford College from 1996 to 2001.

active & adventureSport and outdoor pursuits are an integral part of life at

Seaford College, which boasts some of the finest sports

facilities in the South East.

The College was one of the first schools in Britain to have an

all-weather Astroturf hockey pitch and is one of the few to have

its own golf course, with practice greens and driving range.

It also has a swimming pool, large sports hall, squash and

tennis courts, as well as extensive grounds for a whole range of

competitive sports.

The College has a long tradition of overseas tours – recent tours have seen hockey players in Barbados

and rugby teams in Argentina - and regularly welcomes visiting teams from both home and abroad.

College boys have achieved outstanding national success in hockey and also compete in cricket, rugby,

tennis, athletics, squash and cross-country running, while the school has an equally fine record in girls’

hockey and offers netball, lacrosse, swimming, rounders and athletics.

Pupils who enjoy fishing have access to a well-stocked lake within the school grounds, while others

can try their hand at archery, clay-pigeon shooting and canoeing.

The College runs a highly successful Duke of Edinburgh Scheme all pupils join the Combined Cadet Force

in the Spring Term of Year 9, opening up opportunities with the Army, the Royal Navy and the RAF.

“The school was very supportive and, along with the superb facilities, it offered excellent opportunities to fulfill my ambition of playing international hockey.”

Nyssa McNeill – represented England at hockey up to age 21. Pupil at Seaford College from 1998 – 2002

Students who complete their education in Seaford’s Sixth Form enjoy

a range of privileges appropriate for their age, as well as individual

study bedrooms and their own Common Room and Dining Room.

In Heden Hall, students enjoy a lifestyle and facilities befitting

young men and women about to embark on life at University and

spacious study bedrooms offer ample room to revise for those

all-important end-of-year exams.

Seaford offers 28 subjects at A-level, including textiles,

photography, 3D studies and music technology. Results in all sub-

jects are always consistently outstanding.

Sixth formers are divided into small tutor groups but more

commonly meet on a 1-1 basis with their tutors to discuss aspects

of their work and monitor progress.

The Autumn term begins with a team-building outdoor pursuits

trip, involving a range of challenges and river rafting. This is an

opportunity for the sixth formers to strengthen their friendships and

explore their greater potential as well as develop leadership skills, which

they can put into practice in school as prefects or peer mentors.

On their return to school, it’s off with the wet clothes and on with

the glamour, as the College hosts a Sixth Form Prom before getting

down to A-level coursework in earnest.

Most of the College Sixth Formers go on to University or

higher education. All are equipped with self-confidence and

entrepreneurial skills, as well as a passion for life and a willingness

to succeed, whatever their chosen path or career.
