Dear Parents

Welcome back for Term 4! It has been a busy and exciting start, especially for students, staff and parents involved in hosting the Interschool Athletics Carnival on Wednesday. The Carnival was fantastic and provided a wonderful opportunity for students to do their very best, support their school and to compete in a respectful and positive manner. Congratulations to everyone on an outstanding Carnival and especially to Mr Weckert and Miss Ebbott for their magnificent efforts to “make it happen”.

School Development – Today is a Pupil Free Day. All staff are participating in a professional learning workshop with Brad Williams from Behaviour Tonics. In our rapidly changing world, increasing numbers of children are presenting with social/emotional issues. We need to better support staff to have consistent understandings and strategies to ensure all students are safe, engaged and making good progress. Brad is an experienced behaviour coach and his expertise will certainly support staff at Castletown PS to make adjustments to our policies that impact on student safety, engagement and learning.

School Survey – Our School Board is preparing a survey for parents and teachers to seek feedback about a range of matters. Your participation in this survey will give members of the Board an opportunity to make recommendations for improvement at Castletown PS. Your responses will be very much appreciated.

School Board Meeting – The next meeting of the School Board will be held in the Library at 3.00pm on Wednesday 25 October. Members of the school community are very welcome to attend this meeting.

Curriculum – The school is finalising assessments and making judgements about the extent to which targets have been achieved in 2017. The strategic focus in all Operation Plans for 2018 will be defined following our reviews, the making of recommendations for adjustments and improvement and setting new targets.

Year 6 Graduation – Our Graduation Assembly for Year 6 students will be held in Week 8. This year we are making a number of adjustments to ensure that we maximise our opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the amazing learning journey these students have had in their 8 years at Primary school. This cohort commenced Kindergarten way back in 2010 and many of them started at Castletown PS. We look forward to supporting our Year 6 students to enjoy their special day at our Graduation Assembly 2017.

Should you have any queries or concerns that you would like to discuss, please contact me at the school on 9071 5599 or

[email protected].

Backpacks

Carrying a backpack can injure your child’s back if care is not taken. Here are some helpful tips for protecting young backs:

Make sure that your child’s backpack does not weigh more than 10% of his/her bodyweight.

Choose a backpack with broad shoulder straps that are well padded and adjustable so it sits comfortably on the shoulders.

Backpacks with waist and chest straps will help to evenly distribute weight.

Encourage your child to wear both straps at all times to distribute the weight, adjusting so the backpack fits close against the

child’s back.

Choose a backpack which fits the child.

Make sure that your child is carrying only what she/he really needs to carry, packing the heaviest items closest to the spine.

Do not carry the backpack for long amounts of time, take regular breaks.

For more information visit: go to http://www.backinmotion.com.au/ and check out the ‘Physiotherapist's Guide to Fitting Backpacks’.

Where will Mrs Stevens & her

band of students appear next?!! Wow, hope you’ve had a chance to see our wonderful display at this

year’s Show. Well done students and a huge thank you to Mrs Gow,

Miss Young & Mrs Garvey for putting this awesome display together!

The Castletown Primary School P&C would like to advise families who ordered the 50th year commemorative pavers that they are not far off being made! All orders that have been received are ready to go to the Paver Makers.

We would like to extend this opportunity to anyone that missed out on being part of Castletown’s 50th year anniversary to get in quick and have your name, your child's name or family name to go onto a paver that will be laid within the school grounds as a special memento.

You can choose a hand drawn paver or name paver for $35, to secure your place in Castletown’s permanent history. All proceeds go to the improvement of our school through the P&C.

Forms are available at the School Front Office. Orders & payment need to be in by the 3rd

November.

Looking forward to your support,

Castletown Primary School P&C
