Congratulations to Tony Sawyer for being named Employee of the Month for May 2018!If you have ever had to gain access to a shared drive, had a technical

computer question, or needed software installed on your desktop,

chances are you have encountered Anthony, better known as Tony,

whether in person or over the phone. Since 2013, he has been a help

desk technician in the IT department, where he is also responsible

for new computer imaging and deployment, as well as teaching

faculty and staff about the SRJC technology systems. In addition to his

dedication as a help desk technician, Tony is a dedicated volunteer for

the college, where he has served as the SRJC member on the CCCApply

and eTranscript state-wide steering committees.

When asked what his greatest accomplishment at SRJC has been, Tony responded,

“Singlehandedly running the help desk for several months while new staff was hired.” Last year,

after both his former colleagues accepted offers of promotion within the college, Tony was left

doing the job of three employees while simultaneously training two new employees. With the

number of faculty and staff on this campus who need technical assistance at any given moment,

that is no small accomplishment! Neither is going to school full-time while working a full-time job.

Born in Reno, Nevada, Tony grew up in Santa Rosa and spent a brief time in Arizona where he

graduated from high school and supported his mother. An SRJC alumnus, Tony began his academic

career here in 1987. After a break from college, Tony resumed his studies at SRJC in 1992, joined

by his mother, and the two took some classes together. One pivotal class that Tony took at that

time was a Cobol programming class taught by then IT Director Bob Schooling. In 1994, Bob hired

Tony as an STNC. Two years later, Tony began working as a programmer analyst at SRJC, was then

promoted to Senior Programmer Analyst, and then became a help desk technician. After another

pause in his studies, Tony proudly points out that he resumed his studies at SRJC and worked

full-time while balancing a full class load in order to finish his computer science degree and Cisco

Networking certificate in time to graduate with his daughter Danielle in 2015. “I took the 30-year

path,” said Tony.

Tony’s favorite thing about being a help desk technician is helping students, staff, and faculty with

their computer problems. Tony credits his colleagues on the infrastructure team for helping him

do his job successfully. IT Infrastructure Manager Dan Exelby gives the credit right back, saying,

“Tony is an exemplary employee who consistently demonstrates his dedication and loyalty to SRJC

staff and students through his dedicated service at the help desk.” Dan also commends Tony for

his demonstration of commitment during the Tubbs fire, when Tony recognized a critical need for

his IT expertise, and bravely came to work, even though it was not required during the emergency

District closure, and even as he lost his own home to the flames.

Although Tony and his family experienced traumatic loss, Tony is ever ready to give back,

recognizing the needs of others and doing what he can to help. This summer, Tony will be

working in Northwest Uganda with Sudanese refugees. Other community activities that Tony has

participated in include home building in Tijuana, Mexico, earthquake and poverty relief work in

Kathmandu, Nepal, and fundraising with Redwood Gospel Mission (24 in Your Car).

Tony’s hobbies include hunting, fishing, and scuba diving. He enjoys being with his family: wife

Jean, daughter Danielle, stepdaughters Crystal and Sadona, five grandchildren and 1 great-

grandchild.

ESL Completion Ceremony The 21st Annual ESL Scholarship and Completion Ceremony will be held on Thursday, May 24 at 7:00 p.m. in Newman Auditorium. This event honors the students who have successfully completed the ESL credit program as well as those awarded ESL scholarships.

This year Pedro Avila, Vice President of Student Services and Assistant Superintendent (VPSS) for the Sonoma County Junior College District, will speak on behalf of the college. Additionally, Hernán Quintas, press secretary to U.S. Congressional Representative Raul Ruiz, will be the alumni ESL student-speaker. Refreshments from Fresh and Natural will be served immediately following the ceremony. All members of the SRJC community are welcome to celebrate this joyous evening.

CyberSecurity Camps

SRJC Petaluma is hosting two (2) week-long summer CyberSecurity Camps for high school students, which feature five days of FREE introductory cybersecurity training. Instruction is led by Computer Studies faculty. Training modules developed by the CyberPatriot program cover a variety of topics including hacking prevention, system hardening, access control, and system protection. Each five-day program ends with team competitions and awards.

WHAT IS CYBERPATRIOT?CyberPatriot is the National Youth Cyber Education Program. There are three main programs within CyberPatriot: the National Youth Cyber Defense Competition, AFA CyberCamps and the Elementary School Cyber Education Initiative. SRJC will be walking in the Sonoma County Pride Parade this year and

all are welcome to join in the fun!!The Festival and Parade will be held in downtown Santa Rosa, June 2, 2018.

(4th and Hope Streets) at 11:00 am on June 2nd.

The parade begins at noon and the route ends at Courthouse Square.

When Sonoma County experienced the horrible firestorm in October, our own Dr. Peggy Goebel immediately stepped into action to serve our community. She worked beside many community members and health care providers to ensure that the needs of the medically fragile, as well as healthy people, were being met. With the leadership of Dr. Goebel, and other health care providers, not a single life was lost despite limited access to resources, equipment, supplies, and medications. Peggy worked closely with community members, like Dr. Joe Clendenin and Robert Pellegrini, owner of Tuttle’s Pharmacy, to meet critical and immediate health care needs during the fires.

Peggy, Joe and Robert were honored by the American Red Cross, California Northwest, at their Real Heroes Breakfast on April 27, as Healthcare Heroes for helping hundreds of medically fragile people forced from their homes and two major local hospitals during and after the fires.

Peggy also received the Santa Rosa City Council Merit award for “outstanding contribution to health care in our community” during the City Council meeting on April 16. Congratulations and thank you for all that you do, Peggy!

Matt and Stephanie were honored by the American Red Cross, California Northwest, at their Real Heroes Breakfast on April 27, as Education Heroes for their work on sexual assault prevention. Indoors:• If you are indoors, stay there, and

drop to the floor and take cover under a sturdy desk or table, and hold on to it firmly until the shaking stops. In other words: Drop! Cover! Hold On!

• Protect your head and neck with your arms. Avoid glass, hazardous materials, exterior walls, windows, hanging and heavy objects.

• If in a wheel chair, quickly move toward cover if available, lock the wheels, and cover your head.

• Do not shelter in doorways!

Outdoors:• If outdoors, move to an open area

away from falling hazards such as building walls, overhead power lines, tree limbs and light poles.

After the earthquake: • Stay calm and evaluate the

surroundings.• Evacuate as necessary.• Move to an Evacuation Assembly

• Regroup and take roll of who is OK, injured or missing.

• Notify Emergency Personnel of persons with disabilities or functional needs that need assistance.

• Provide first aid based upon your level of training.

SHELTER-IN-PLACEWhen an evacuation is not safe or conditions are more dangerous outside (e.g. severe weather, chemical spill) it may be safer to shelter-in-place. • The District will activate appropriate methods of emergency notification.• Immediately seek refuge inside the nearest building. • Move to rooms without windows if possible.• Close any open windows and doors if you cannot move.• Rooms that have little or no ventilation are preferred.• Try to block windows and doors with clothing or towels to block airflow. Wet

clothing or towels create a better seal against airflow.• Only come out when you are told that it is safe by District officials or

emergency personnel at the scene.

situation. It typically takes at least 15 minutes to assess the situation.

ACTIVE SHOOTERRun!• If it’s possible to get away from

danger, do so. If the threat is in your building or area always try to escape or evacuate, even when others insist on staying.

• Once out of the line of fire, try to prevent others from walking into the danger zone and call District Police.

Hide!• If it’s not possible to get out safely,

or if the threat is external to your building, find a place to hide.

• Act quickly and quietly.• Try to secure the hiding place as

much as possible. Turn out lights, and if possible, remember to lock doors. Silence ringers and vibration mode on cell phones. If there isn’t a safe room or closet, try to hide behind large objects that may offer protection.

• Try to remain quiet and calm

Fight!• As a last resort, if life is at risk,

either alone or working together as a group, fight!

• Act with aggression. Improvise weapons. Disarm the shooter. Commit to taking the shooter down, no matter what. District Police Officers are trained to respond without delay to begin a rapid search towards the gunfire to meet the shooter.

• Do not expect police to assist or tend to wounded victims until the shooter is no longer a threat.

• When confronted by police, keep your hands in plain sight (fingers spread), don’t make sudden movements, and follow their directions

HAZARDOUS MATERIALIndoor spill:• If a chemical spill occurs within a

building, immediately notify the District Police.

• Warn others and block entry into the hazardous area until the Emergency Personnel arrive.

• Evacuate as necessary.• In general, move uphill and

upwind from a spill.

Outdoor spill:• If a chemical spill occurs outside of

a building or from an off campus source, follow shelter-in-place procedures.

Chemical exposure:• Notify Emergency Personnel if the

material has gotten onto your skin, clothing or shoes.

• Do not leave the area until you have been checked.

BOMB THREAT OR SUSPICIOUS OBJECTSIf you receive a bomb threat or observe a suspicious object: • Contact the District Police, and provide as much information as possible. • Evacuate the area around the object.• Follow instructions from the District Police.

MEDICAL EMERGENCY• Contact the District Police, provide information on the type of injury and the
