R&6POLL
RESULTSHERE you have it. The
sensational results ofRM's own "R and B Poll"are all inside this week. Andwhat a turn up for the bookssome of them are! Aftersifting through thousands ofentry forms, RM staff, halfdead with exhaustionthrough days of calculatingcame up with the resultswhich are published in fullon Page 4 this week.
In the section 'Top MaleArtistes' winner was ChuckBerry, by quite a long head- and Chuck's fans willknow already that a specialChuck Berry Supplement iscontained on pages 8 and 9of RM this week. He wasclosely followed by surprisesuccess Marvin Gaye, whoobviously made this positionon the strength of two discs."Pride and Joy" and "Can IGet A Witness". But watchout for his newie, the great"You're A Wonderful One".issued this week.
WINNERS
Other winners were MaryWells, who literally walkedaway with the 'Top FemaleSinger' award - but never-theless there were literallyhundreds of others listedwith only one vote. Top MaleGroup were The Miracles -they would have had evenmore votes but many readersthought they were a femalegroup and voted into thatcategory although there is agirl in the group, she doesn'tsing lead. Biggest surprisemust have been the Stonesat third place.
Top Female Group werethe Shirelles-and like manyof the winners they aredubious R and B but never-theless they had a substan-tial lead over the Marvelettesand Martha and The Vandel-las.

ALL THESE 'ON THE SLIDE'RUMOURSI'D say the worst thing for a recording artiste nowadays is
to make the Number One slot. For if the follow-upfails to reach the top, then the cynics are only too eagerto put the skids under that star. Prime example is Gerryand The Pacemakers . . . their fourth just failed to repeatthe chart -topping of the first three and the "Are They OnThe Slide" rumours started.
It also applies to DaveClark, Freddie, Brian Pooleand others. I suppose there'dbe a national crisis if theBeatles failed to hit NumberOne. But let's remember itWILL happen one day andlet's hope it doesn't meanthe end!-Roy Carr, 12, St.Albans Road, Blackpool,Lancs.
L.P. winner.
FAME VIEWSMAY I suggest that all the
bickering fans of R and Bread the article from this
country's best Blues man, GeorgieFame? He looked at the Bluesexactly as it should be viewed . . .
that there are different ways ofapproaching it, re: R 'n' B, folk, modern jazz and people should notargue over which is best. I'm notsaying that all pop beat groups ofthe moment are R, and B . . .
though what they play may be oldR and B records.-D. Utting, 5,Haileybury Road, Orpington, Kent.
EL'S BACKINGS
INMY opinion, the main reasonwhy Elvis no longer tops theBritish and American charts
is not because of the MerseySound but because his single ma-terial has become overcrowdedwith unnecessary backing - andbacking that isn't up to a veryhigh standard, at that. In many ofhis earlier discs, the backing isalmost unnoticeable, or very simple. They allowed the fabulousvoice of the "King" to be heardto its full advantage. Come onColonel Parker: more Elvis andless stodgy backing. - JeremyMillard, 69, The Downs, Harlow,Essex.
GERRY didn't makenumber one with "I'm TheOne"-and although it wasNo. 2, the 'knockers'stepped in.
FED UP
IAM fed up. Not with the lengthof hair on the Rolling Stones'heads, be it long or short. I
don't care for those who say theBeatles play B. and B or thosewho say it can only be played byBooker T and friends. The samegoes for cries of "Elvis isfinished"-they've been saying thatabout the Navy since 1066. Please,would-be world reformers,. learnthat people have individual tasteswhether it be R and B, C and W,or ABC. The trends may changebut people remain individuals, des-pite advertising and "Compact."Unfortunately, people being whatthey are-individual and argument-ative, the R and B, Beatle, Elvisand Ena Sharpies' fans will bom-bard me with individual, argu-mentative scrolls.-Tony Riddick,82, Queenscroft Road, London,S.E.9.
THE CULT
CONGRATULATIONS to PyeRecords on getting TommyTucker's "High Heel Sneakers"
into the charts. Some credit mustalso go to the Rolling Stones forfeaturing it in their act, and to theBeatles for raving about it. If Pyecould do the same for "Walk OnBy," or "Gonna Send You BackTo Georgia," the British chartswould be healthier. But I suspectmany R and B fans wouldn't reallyagree. They'd prefer their preciousrecords to remain a minority cult.-A. V. Kemp -Jones, 31, HollandPark, London, W.11.
MISLEADING
NOW that "Can't Buy Me Love"has sold a million and left thetop of the charts, we get the
national papers and TV news mengleefully reporting that the Beatleshave been knocked off their perchand that their days in the big timeare numbered. This type of report-ing is misleading, because theBeatles advance orders are nowso great that nearly everyonewho wants a disc has it inside afew weeks.-Michael Shepherd, 9,Parr Drive, Colchester, Essex.
BEAR SKINS
DOES Norman Jopling thinkthat we in the North goaround wearing bear -skins?
His reference that all the New-castle groups are still playingShadows' material seems to implyso. The Shads' type of music isexcellent but I very much doubtif more than one group in 100includes any of their material. TheAnimals were ONE of the leadinggroups in Newcastle, but whatabout others like the Gamblers?-Anthony Reed, 6, Whinmoor Place,Cowgate, Newcastle. 5.

Mojo's and theirMad Mad World
THEmadcap Mojos, five strong and violently energetic, impacted themselves on the
critics with their first disc, "Forever." Now they've struck fair and square at thefans with "Everything's Alright." But it's really only the start for this ambitious "mob."
For example, they want to produce their own Mad MOJOFILMS. Says pianist TerryO'Toole: "All wacky ideas. Like having one scene set in a vast railway station. Millionsof people standing about, weeping and crying ... then the station moves off !"Or another scene. A
house, with water pouringout of all the windows. Thena fire engine roars up . . .
and the firemen start squirt-ing FIRE into the house."
Enter Stuart Slater. "Whatwe want is one reallyimportant date at a toptheatre. We get the big buildup from the compere. A rollon the drums. Then the cur-tain opens - and there weall are, in shirt sleeves, play-ing cards around a table!"
Crazy stuff. With, I report, more to come.
COLLECTIONGuitarist Nicky Crouch is
a keen photographer and isbuilding up a complete pic-torial record of the group'sactivities. Terry, former stu-dent at the Liverpool Collegeof Art, sketches members ofother beat groups. Keith Karl -son is a talented poet andhas already a collection ofodes to stars like the Beatles.
Then there is Stuart, cur-rently working on his firstnovel, "Both Roads Lead ToHome" - it has a lot of hisown background included. He adds: "There are ump-teen books and publicationsabout the beat groups. Butthey give a glamorous pic-ture of the life we all lead.I want to produce somethingwhich is authentic and showsthe other side of the life."
And they're also in thethroes of writing a new -stylepantomime, in which several
by PETER JONESother Liverpool groups willbe featured. "That'll give usa chance for some moreslapstick", they said.
Now this would seem to bea pretty full schedule forthe boys. But there's alsotheir song -writing. Back inthe early days of 1963, theywon a song -writing contractwith Aberbach Music - theynicked the prize in competi-tion with some eighty othergroups.
When Oriole A and R manJohn Schroeder heard a num-ber of theirs during a tripto Liverpool, he immediatelytook it for his own group,Faron's Flamingos. That was"See If She Cares", now inmost group repertoires.
And the ironic touch isthat Nicky Crouch, the new-est Mojo, was then a memberof the Flamingos. .
Recollections about thosedays finally got the talkativeMojo's back to the subject oftheir current biggie, "Every-thing's Alright". Seems it wasthe most panicky bit of writ-ing they've ever done. . .
They were appearing at theStar Club, Hamburg. The en-gagement was for one monthand it was agreed that they'dhave a new single out im-mediately they returned toBritain. But Decca executivesdecided that the one awaitingrelease "Seven Golden Daffo-
dils" would be better as thefollow - up to an all - outrave beat number.
So Mojo A and R manFranklyn Boyd decided to goto Hamburg and record theboys on some originalmaterial. "Trouble was, wedidn't have anything suitable. So we had to get round apiano in the Star Club wheneverything was quiet andhammer out a new song indouble - quick time.
"It took only a fewminutes. A day later it was inthe can."
DIFFICULTYLike most beat groups, the
Mojos sometimes have diffi-culty in getting up in themorning - which oftenmeans one or two of thembeing late for rehearsals.
Manager Spencer Masonhas found a way to shakethem out of that bad habit. He fines them according tothe lateness - say, ten bobfor half - an - hour adrift;fifteen shillings for an hour.
And the money is used tobuy small items of equip-ment, like guitar strings anddrum sticks.
If anybody is interested inbuying a job lot of stringsand sticks . . well, I knowone group who'd be glad tohelp out.

GEORGIE FAME seen here with his great group THE BLUE FLAMES was voted themost popular R & B artiste in Britain. Georgie is almost completely different fromany other British R & B artiste as he features organ, bongos, sax, etc. His sound Isearthy and exciting, and his music has progressed considerably. Several years agohe was just another face in the Larry Parnes stable, singing rock. Now -Britain's
top R & B star !

THESE results of this, the-II- first R and B Poll to beconducted by any Britishpop music weekly are veryvery interesting to say theleast. After sifting throughthousands of entries we cameto the conclusion that R andB in Britain is much muchbigger than anyone suspects.Let's take a look at theresults.
Top male singer - ChuckBerry. Maybe not too sur-prising when you considerthat he's the most commer-cial of the R and B singers, and has probably enjoyedmore recent success with theR and B tagline than anyother singer. He's followedby a succession of R and Ball-time favourites. It cer-tainly seems that record saleshave hardly any influence onpoll results - neither MarvinGaye, Jimmy Reed, nor How-lin' Wolf have scored anyhits in this country but theybeat Bo Diddley and LittleRichard who have bothscored substantially here atone time or another.
JUST OUT
Another surprising fact isthat many of the top artisteshave had very few disc re-leases in this country. Cer-tainly Howlin' Wolf, JamesBrown, Arthur Alexanderand Sonny Boy Williamsonhaven't much in the cata-logues. Just out of lists are
BEST MALE SINGER 6. James Brown 1067. Arthur
1. Chuck Berry 543 Alexander ... 752. Marvin Gaye 357 8. Muddy Waters 733. Jimmy Reed 229 9. Little Richard 714. Howlin' Wolf 182 10. Sonny Boy5. Bo Diddley ... 181 Williamson 69
Ben E. King at No. 11,tying with Ray Charles, whilethey are followed by JohnLee Hooker, Jerry Lee Lewis,Major Lance, Rufus Thomas,Fats Domino, Sam Cooke,Elvis Presley, Solomon Burkeand James Ray.
Top female singer MaryWells polled almost 20 timesas many votes as the nextfavourite Etta James. La -Verne Baker, who hasn't hada disc issued for two yearscame third, while up andcoming ballad -blues s o n g -stress Dionne Warwick, inthe charts with "Walk OnBy" came fourth. Tina, ofthe Ike and Tina Turnerteam made number six, oneplace below Timi Yuro, oneof the few white singers inthe whole poll. VictoriaSpivey obviously was placeddue to the recent Folk BluesFestival.
Best male group was theMiracles - the Beatles fav-ourites incidentally. Theywere followed by theCoasters, who have just madea disc comeback in the
-.V. T T T -4. -4, 4 -States with their comedydisc "T'Ain't Nothing To Me."The Rolling Stones camethird in the list - higherin fact than their positionin the top British artistessection, something which issomewhat astonishing. Never-theless it's an achievementwhich no other British artistehas. The Impressions, thatgreat "new sound" vocalgroup in at No. 4, while theIsley Brothers of "Twist AndShout" original fame arehalf -way. Two other Britishgroups creep in at the lowerend - Manfred Mann andthe Yardbirds.
TAMLA SOUNDThe Shirelles as the top
female group triumphed overthe more commercial groupswhich have made the charts, such as the Crystals, Ron-ettes and the Chiffons. TheTamla - Motown sound ismuch in evidence here withthe Marvelettes, Martha andThe Vandellas and the Su-premes well placed. Phil
JIMMY REED was voted
Spector's two groups, theCrystals and The Ronetteshave done well.
Best disc was Howlin'Wolf's "Smokestack Light-nin' " - a blues standardthat is performed by almosteverybody on the Britishscene - no-one who eversaw the late Cyril Daviesperforming it at his Marqueesessions will be able to forgetthe atmosphere and excite-ment he generated onChester Burnette's song.
third most popular R & B singer in Britain (RM picGUY STEVENS).
Booker T. (Jones) and theM.G's (Memphis Group) stan-dard "Green Onions" whichsold a million in the Statesin 1982 comes second-theyhave only had four releaseshere, all on London. RayCharles and "What'd I Say"burst on the scene in 1958when Pete(r) Murray said" . . . this is the guy who'swilder than Little Richard"when plugging side two ofthis great exciting disc.Voted the best ever R and B
disc by a female singer, "TwoLovers" by Mary Wellsscored highly, while fellowTamla - Motown stars theMiracles have two top discs"You Really Got A Hold OnMe," and "Shop Around." Infact there are four Tamladiscs in the charts-"Money"is the other - the fabulousversion by Barrett Strong ofcourse. Diddley's great"Pretty Thing" comes in,

BEATLES' BURGLARBEATLES
George Harrison and Ringo Starr arrived back attheir Knightsbridge, London, flat after a week -end
engagement, shortly after midnight on Sunday, to find thatevery room had been ransacked and valued personalpossessions missing.
They immediately called the police, who, after searching theflat at Whaddon House, William Mews, Knightsbridge, dis-covered that a cat burglar had climbed over adjoining roofsand clambered on to a balcony, where a french window hadbeen forced.
Nothing had been left un-touched. Draws and cup-boards had been turned out.At Gerald Road police sta-tion, nearby, George andRingo told detectives thatthe only property that wasmissing was a pair of cuff-links, various souvenirs ofthe recent American tour, and a sum of cash.
Reports varied as to thetotal value. Some mentionedthe figure of £200, whileother estimates reachedtwice that sum.
At the time of going topress, George and Ringowere not available for com-ment.

SEARCHER MARRIAGE
REPORTS PUZZLESEARCHERS' guitarist Mike Pender (22) and his pretty wife
May (19) read their Sunday newspaper together withpuzzled looks this week -end.
For the couple had just noticed a report announcing thatMike was planning to leave the top pop Liverpool group toget married.
"I was amazed," Mike told the R.M. "I knew nothing aboutthe report and I don't know where it came from.
"It's completely untrue. With the Searchers swinging alongthe way they are at the moment, the possibility of leavingis unthinkable."
How the "news" leaked out to the national Press is amystery. The fact that Mike is married has been commonknowledge for weeks now.

groaned, and doubled upin pain as he cringed fromthe sharp jabbing at hisstomach.
"Call a doctor," he criedout to his grandmother intheir London home.
The doctor arrived, a n ddiagnosed a perforated pepticulcer. "No doubt about it,"said the doctor, orderingMike off to hospital, a n dwarning Mike that he'd needan operation and would bein hospital for a month.
Mike was forlorn.
X -RayHowever, whilst undergoing
medication, an X-ray testshowed that Mike was notquite so ill as the doctor hadthought. He was, in fact, suffering from a bad dose offood poisoning.
More treatment, and Mikewas discharged from t h eRoyal Northern Hospital,Archway, little more than 24hours after he had beenadmitted.
Wisely taking a rest, Mikecancelled his engagements forlast week -end - Edmontonon Friday, Leicester on Sun-day, a "Thank Your LuckyStars" recording on Sunday, and West Ham on Monday.
His first appearance sincethe illness is tomorrow (Fri-day), at Norwich.
Mike's latest record, issuedonly last week, is called"Lovesick." Ironically, thelyric refers to Dr. Kildare ..

POLL RESULTS°Continued from Page 5
while the surprise was prob-ably "Mojo" which came invia Muddy Waters.
Just under the ten wereJimmy Reed's "Shame ShameShame," three Chuck Berrynumbers - "Johnny beGoode," "Roll OverBeethoven," and "Come On,"followed closely by "StandBy Me," tying with "YouBetter Move On" and "CanI Get A Witness."
Top British artiste isGeorgie Fame, who is prob-ably deeper in the bluesfield than any other repre-sented artiste in this section, while Long John Baldry, who has been on the scenefor several years, comessecond - he's just about toreally burst into the scenein a big way too. The lateCyril Davies still has a lotof faithful fans as demon-strated by his third place, while Jimmy Powell probablygot his position due to thethree fabulous discs he made- "Sugar Baby," "TomHark," and "RememberThen." Others were ratherpredictable although DaveBerry at number ten was asurprise result.
Booker T. And The M.G'swalked away with this topinstrumental group or artisteaward, followed mainly byvocalists who have producedlarge numbers of good in-strumentals. The only pureinstrumentalists left wereLonnie Mack, of "Memphis"and "Wham" fame, and themarvellous Markeys.
In the poll, the manyspoiled papers had to bediscounted, while a fewreaders, not realising thatthis was an R and B poll, voted for purely pop artistes.Altogether this poll probablyconfirms the suspicions ofR and B fans about the mostpopular stars in Britain, butthere's one strange thing.
Why don't they get intothe charts more often?

CHUCK -KING OF BEATTHE STORY OF CHUCK'S CAREER AND
COMEBACK, BY GUY STEVENSCHUCK BERRY . . . songwriter . . . guitarist . . . singer . . . performer . . . the list
is endless. A man of many talents, and not all of them concerned with showbusiness, Chuck Berry has now been accepted as one of the most phenomenal enter-tainers of our age. Despite continual undulations in the pop music field, he has main-tained and increased his popularity with all sections of the record buying public, sincehis first record, 'Maybellene,' won him the Billboard Triple Crown Award in 1955. Hiscompositions have been recorded time and again by scores of artistes and groups, hisguitar and vocal style copied, and his tunes and lyrics imitated on countless occasions. He is one of the few artistes who has as many fans in the business as outside of it.and his discs can be found in practically any type of record collection.
And now, following monthsof controversy, we will at lastbe able to see this incredibleperformer in the flesh onBritish stages for the firsttime. His three week tourstarts at Finsbury ParkAstoria on May 9th, on asensational bill which alsoincludes another greatveteran of the rock age, CarlPerkins, King Size Taylor andthe Dominoes, The Animalsand the Swinging Blue Jeans. Will Chuck live up to thefantastic reputation he has

THAT STAR SOUND
WHAT MAKES THE
BLUE JEANS SWING
INSTRUMENTALLYTO reach the Swinging Blue Jeans I had to get past a1 couple of donkeys, a cow whose back half turned outto be a woman, and my favourite TV animal characters,011ie Beak and Fred Barker. And even when 'Five O'ClockClub's' livestock was behind me, I still had to cope withthe noise of Feeding Time in AR -TV's canteen.
Yelled Ralph Ellis over the clatter: "Ray Ennis and Iswan the lead part about, so sometimes he's playing leadand sometimes it's me. I use a Fender Stratocaster," hebellowed when he'd got his breath back, "with GibsonSonomatic strings. I've had it about three years now, and. it cost me somewhere around /170.
"But I'm thinking of chang-ing from a solid to a semi -acoustic soon, probably aGretsch or a Gibson. I don'tknow; there seems to be abit more depth in the toneof a semi -acoustic.
SMASHED"The writing? Oh, well,
we all do a bit of it. Forthe B side of "Miss Molly"we all pitched in. We wereon our way from Portsmouthto the session, and once westarted having ideas it onlytook us about ten minutesto get it written. Les" (LesBraid, bass guitar) "onlywrites instrumentals, of

course, because he can'twrite words."
Les, who hadn't heard, said "I use a Fender JazzBass, and Fender strings. That's the one your hear onthe records. I used to havean acoustic, a Hofner Con-gress, which I kept for com-posing on and for my own
amusement. But somebodytried to steal it a few weeksago, and when they foundthey couldn't get through thewindow of the van, theysimply smashed it up. I usedto play piano when I wasabout ten, and after that Iwas brought up on doublebass."
We chewed our cups oftea, and waited for thenoise to die down. NormanKuhlke managed to tell mehis drums were by Ludwig, very new, but that he'd kepthis old 20in. cymbal and I5in.hi -hat. "It's not so muchthis or that make," he said,"as this or that individualcymbal. You have to keeptrying them all till you findexactly the ones you want.Never change your cymbalsonce you've found them."
HUMOUR
It was quieter in the SBJ'sdressing room, but there wasa different hazard - RayEnnis's sense of humour."The guitar I play is a redone. That one up there.
THE SWINGING BLUE
There you are; red. Greenones are no good at all. What make? Do they havedifferent makes?" After alot more of this he relentedto the point of admitting itwas a Gibson. "A 335 STD,"he said. "That means I canphone Liverpool on it with-out asking the operator."
The Jeans' amplifiers are
JEANS 'tell all' about their
Vox T.60's, and they carrywith them a set of Reslomicrophones and two banksof 4 Grampian speakers.
"What happens if there'sa power cut?" I asked."Easy," said Ralph Ellis."When our amps cut out theother night, Ray just shoutedto the audience 'We will nowplay "Silent Night."' brought
instrumental secrets.
the place down."I could believe it. When
I left, Ray Ennis had justgot back from the make-updepartment. He was carryinga small pot of white cream."What's that?" asked Nor-man.
"It's stuff for getting thestuff off after I've done mestuff," he said.

CARL PERKINS
CARL PERKINS: Help Me FindMy Baby; I Wouldn't Have You(Brunswick 05905). The ex -rock 'n'roller with the Country tinge hasgone almost back purely to C andW and this middle-of-the-roadsong is not too commercial.PETULA CLARK: In Love; Forget-ting You (Pye 15639) Lush stringsmoan behind Pet's stylish interpre-tation of a happy ballad. Not ascommercial as some of hers, butmust sell very well indeed.THE SHIRELLES: Sha - La - La;His Lips Get In The Way (PyeInternational 25240) Average sort ofgroup vocal and in a lighter moodthan some of the Shirelle efforts. But it swings and should attractattention.THE BAKER TWINS: WordsWritten On Water; He's No Good(Pye 15628) Lovely lasses whoenunciate well here on the debutdisc. Something similar toGerry's "I Like It" in conception-a snappy beat -ballad with tune-ful vocal front-line and goodinstrumental work.ROGER WILLIAMS: Non Ho L'eta'Per Amarti; Roger's Bumblebee(London HLR 9879). Typical, lush, string -laden treatment of a big -sound melody by the piano star.Good for late -night listening, butnot for the charts.
Great Disc From BillyBuddy-L.P. Track
THE MONOTONES: It's Great;Anymore (Pye 15640) Personablegroup who go for something differ-ent, sound - wise. Comes off too,on the pacey "It's Great". Notquite "Great", but very good.THE DOVELLS: Be My Girl;Dragster On The Prowl (Cameo -Parkway 901) Biggish sort of vocal -group sound on a falsetto -domina-ted number. Got a little of theLiverpool "feel" about it all.IRENE REID: I Love Paris; HardHearted Hannah (MGM 1231). FromIrene's debut album "It's OnlyThe Beginning"-and she showsher jazz -styling well on the click-ing -type interpretation of "Paris."Pretty far-out phrasing.MIKE SARNE: A Place To Go;Out And About (Parlophone R5129). Interest-ing instrumental, zestfully recorded.Lots of different sounds to sustainthe top side and a fairly strongtheme.THE MANHATTAN BROTHERS:Wimoweh; Blue Sky (Columbia DB7274). Good deep sound on theold familiar song - with wildfalsettos going on and a fiery, full -range vocal sound. Fascinating.
BILLY FURY1 Will; Nothin' Shakin' (Decca
F 11888).
DESTINED for the upperreaches, for sure, this dynamicFury version of the old Vic
Dana hit. Strings sweep awaybehind him as he sings out withstyle and certainty of phrasing.Nice easy tempo, with a goodbuild-up towards the end. Songis exceptionally strong, too. Flipwas a big American hit somesix years ago for Eddie Fontaine. . . and it suits Billy's up -tempo,crash -bang style very nicely.TOP FIFTY TIP

You've Got Love; An Empty Cup(Coral Q 72472).
THIS one should make the fiftybut it comes from the L.P."The Chirping Crickets," so
it could miss the really big-timebecause so many people will al-ready have it stashed away. Some-what old-fashioned in conception.Well -performed all the way, with aninteresting middle eight featuringguitar and voices. "Empty Cup"is from the same L.P. and it'llprobably miss B.B.C. plays becauseit mentions the word "Coke."TOP FIFTY TIP
ROY ORBISONIt's Over; Indian Wedding
(London HLU 9882).
ANOTHER sad ballad, with atheme of unrequited love andall that, and of course it's
immaculately commercial. Straight-forward singing, as ever, but soefficient and so warm that itshould immediately be borne onthe wind into the charts. Beauti-fully arranged. Story -line lyricsfor the Orbison-penned flip, withtom-tom drums and choral effectsof high quality. Catchy, appealing,upper-class.TOP FIFTY TIP

just beginning to get herbearings!
For young Dana-a beauti-ful, dark Italian girl who wasraised in South African sun-shine - has been in a showbusiness whirl for the lastthree years. All because herbrother is the famous tenorSergio Franchi.
"In 1960 I was on my wayto Germany to take a coursein interpreting," she told me."At school I was good atlanguages so I decided tomake a career out of them. But I stopped off in Milanto see my brother. He tookme along to his agent's of-fice where I met a man whowas trying to sing a song inEnglish. His accent was ter-rible, and I said so. 'Show mehow to sing the songproperly' he pleaded. So Idid."
TRICKBut the whole thing had
been a trick by brotherSergio who had planted theagent in the next room andtold him to listen. Sergioknew that Dana would neveragree to do an audition.
The result of this set-upwas that the agent rushedin with an offer of a sevenmonths' contract to sing in ashow in the Italian touristresort of Alassio.
Her fate was sealed: theAlassio job was a roaringsuccess, she acquired anItalian recording contractand the company entered herfor the Milan Song Festival. She won. This led to lots ofItalian TV work.
But Dana got homesick forSouth Africa (where she'dlived since the age of six).So she went on what wasintended to be a brief visitto her parents. She wasflooded with show offers andfinished up topping bills.
Now she's come to London. Her sun - kissed skin andRoman face misleads shop-keepers into thinking thatshe is thoroughly foreign("they speak very slowly andsay things like 'That will betwo SHILLINGS and one SIX-PENCE'; sometimes theyeven take the money out ofmy handbag for me!") but, despite the cold caused byour cool, cool Spring, MissValery is quickly becomingacclimatised to the Londonscene. And, considering hertalent as a pop singer, itshouldn't be long before thewhole of Britain becomes ac-climatised to her!

NEW NAMES
ON THE REBOUND
THE REBOUNDS
WANTED, by up-and-comingbeat group: A GHOST! Orat least the chance to look
over some premises which arereputed to be haunted! Forspectre -seeking is the main off -duty hobby of the Rebounds, outnow with their debut disc on theFontana label.
The four young men from Essexexplained: "We're not kiddingabout this. We've spent manynights in plices in Suffolk andKent-places where it's rumouredthere are ghosts kicking around.
"So if any of the Record Mirrorreaders know of anywhere new. . . well, we'll be only too happyto investigate."
Lead guitarist Shaun Corrigan, bassist Pete Gill and pianist -organist David Watts are reallythe keenest. I noticed drummerMick Simons keeping rather quietabout the ghostly aspect of life. Finally he admitted: "I'm not allthat anxious to find a real ghost.I go along only because theothers do.
"And if I did meet up face toface with anything supernatural I
can assure you of one thing. I'dmake a run for it. You wouldn'tsee me for dust."
SEARCHERSIf he yelled "Help Me" at the
same time, you couldn't blamehim. That's the title of their firstdisc. And a plug IS a plug, afterall . .
The Rebounds have been playingtogether for eighteen months andwere originally called TheSearchers. On the rebound, as itwere, they changed their namelast summer. They've played avery successful two -month tour ofAmerican G.I. bases in Franceand also backed American starJohnny Burnette on his Britishtour in November, 1963.
Shaun Corrigan nearly ended hismusical career before it started,by the way, because some faultywiring in some borrowed amplifica-tion equipment severely burned hishands. He doesn't put that accidentdown to ghosts, though - justinefficiency.

JOHN PAUL JONES
STRIKING out on his ownwith a new solo disc:
John Paul Jones, bass guitar-ist with the Tony MeehanGroup. And the discwhich could do the trick is"Baja", out on Pye, andfeaturing John Paul on six -string bass.
Says JP: "I'd been plan-ning a solo career for my-self but I hadn't really gotaround to deciding exactlywhat to do. Then recordingmanager Andrew Oldhamcame up one day and saidhe had just the right numberfor me.
"It was quite a session. Weused a ten - piece orchestra, but the disc started with justbass and drums. Then it juststarted building - we evenhad a choir on it later on."
John Paul is 18, was bornin Sidcup, Kent. He went toschool in Blackheath andlearned to play piano andorgan. Then he started in onbass guitar while he was stillat school. "My main hobbynow is buying records", hesays. "Anything by DionneWarwick, Sarah Vaughan orTony Bennett is great byme."
And he also says: "Theonly thing I really dislike ishaving to rush about". Yethe wants to be a top popsoloist? He must be kidding.

The National ChartPETER & GORDON take over the top spot from the Beatles-
but as it's a Beatles number we don't think the four lads areworrying too much. Not much in the way of competition, but
Millie is the strongest outsider this week with her disc which cer-tainly seems to be growing on the record buyers. Unfortunately, poor Millie hasn't much chance of reaching the top, with thefavourites leaping up for the top spot. There's the Searchers withtheir fabulous "Don't throw your love away" - a cert. for the topspot. And there's Gerry, and Manfred Mann, both leaping up likecrazy into the regions of the top ten. Other fast risers this weekinclude Dionne Warwick (three cheers!), the Merseybeats, theAnimals, and the Four Pennies.
Newies this week include certs like the Fourmost, and thesleeper from Frank Ifield. plus some unusual discs. There's theEurovision song contest winner, by glamorous Gigliola Cinquetti, and "The Spartans" from Sounds Inc.-that most underrated group.Plus a return for Richard Anthony with his great rendition of "IfI Loved You."
And "She loves you" drops out for the second time . . .

RM SPOTLIGHT ON A TOPICAL QUESTION
Brenda's Homein Britain P
DON'T quote Brenda Lee herself on this - but . . . she has apparently been dropping hintsthat she'd like to live, full-time, in Britain. At least, that theory comes direct from her
manager and friend Dub Allbritten. He hints in a letter from the States: "Brenda's had this move in her mind for quite a
while. I guess she fell in love with Britain on her previous tours-and I think she believesthe fans there are rather more solidly loyal than they are in America."
If Brenda DID make themove, it'd be good news in-deed. She's taking thingseasy for a while, where workis concerned-but will startthinking more about sing-ing in a few months. Herbaby daughter, Julie Leann,is doing well . . . after thosescares about her tininess andpremature birth a few weeksago.
Brenda arrives in Britainfor her tour around themiddle of September - andshe says this will be her firstactual working engagementsince the birth of the baby.Venues, by the way have notyet been finalised by theDon Arden office.
For the eagerly - awaitedBritish tour, Brenda is hop-ing to use her own backinggroup, the Casuals, for thefirst time out of America. This does raise problems onthe "exchange" basis as laiddown by the Musicians'Union, but it is hoped thatthe Flintstones will make areciprocal trip to the States.
by PETER JONESNow for a message from
Brenda herself. "Around thetime my baby was born, Ihad a whole host of mess-ages from British fans wish-ing us all well and express-ing good wishes. And I'd bevery pleased if you couldpass on our thanks to every-body-they were real swellgestures. Especially the
little presents we receivedfor the baby.
"And when I start workagain in Britain . . . well, Ican only say I can't think ofanywhere I'd rather be tostart over after my tempor-ary retirement!"
I say: Brenda Lee is verywelcome to use our little olecountry any time she wants.
BOBBY AND THOSE BEATLES
BOBBY VEE talks abouthis "She's Sorry" disc.
SO that controversial discing of "She's Sorry" by BobbyVee looks doomed to Flopsville. "Too much like the
Beatles" is, presumably, the attitude of Bob's erstwhilelegion of fans.
But recently, on Peter Aldersley's "Pop Around" RadioLuxembourg programme, Bobby was questioned about thedisc. . . about the Beatles . . . and about his "motives."
Said Peter: "That record. In one way, it's a very greatcompliment that an Ameri-can should pay a tribute toa British group. It's been inreverse for many, manyyears."
Bobby: "Yes . . . This issuch a tremendous thing Ithought that since it's going
IT'S OVER HLU 988245 rpm
LONDON RECORDS DIVISION OFTHE DECCA RECORD COMPANY LTDDECCA HOUSE ALBERT EMBANKMENTLONDON SE1
to be a trend, I'd like to bein on it."
Peter asked Bobby aboutthe Beatles in the States.Said Bobby: "Well, I waspreviously familiar with theBeatles, When they cameout with 'Love Me Do.' theyimpressed me very muchwith their feeling and soforth, but I think that thegeneral public in the Statesis just so overwhelmed bytheir uniqueness and they'reso different and there's somuch honesty in their songs.I think the way they writeand sing and everything-it's like nothing they've everseen before. It's just theopposite extreme of theAmerican singers, I think."
Peter Aldersley: "I'm in-terested as to whether it'llbecome a trend, as such, inthe States. I mean, youdidn't take your record 'She'sSorry' as an indication ofYOUR future, I hope?"
Bobby: "No. It was origin-ally scheduled on an albumwhich will be released .
and will probably be theonly record of this sort thatI'll do. There's a theme toit, a definite Beatle theme, and then I'll go back to someof the old things that, youknow, the old style we'vebeen doing. But as far as theBeatles are concerned, Ithink this sound will remainin the States for quite a goodtime, especially that materialwritten by them."
INDEPENDENTThen Peter talked to
Bobby about his "I Remem-ber Buddy" album and askedwhy Bobby thought thatBuddy. his influence and hisrecords still remained.
Bobby: "Well, I think hewas very much like theBeatles in certain ways. Ithink that he was completelyindependent of any othersingers and styles. For histime, he was very originaland very sincere and had avery honest approach tomusic, and as much as theBeatles I think he wasunique."
GREAT GEORGIE!We've said it all along, now the RecordMirror Poll proves you are Britain's No. 1
