INDIA Sustainability Update 2017-18

This year represents a momentous milestone for us. We complete 25 years of our operations in India in 2018, since resuming operations in 1993.

I am fascinated with the pace at which the global context has evolved over the last decade. The world today is characterized by a finite pool of resources with ever-increasing demands on it. This demand-supply imbalance is manifesting in the form of serious developmental challenges that confronts the world today in the form of climate change, poverty, food security, access to water and sanitation. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) introduced by the United Nation and the Paris Summit, represent some of the multi-lateral interventions that seek to address these global challenges at scale.

At one end of the spectrum, we support the community of farmers by encouraging local procurement of fruits, thereby helping create more income opportunities. Our flagship Fruit Circular Economy (FCE) initiative represents our continued efforts in this direction. The initiative is also in line with the Government’s Make-in-India campaign and Doubling far ers income by 2022. We, along with our supply chain partners, are on track to meet our commitment of investing over $1.7bn in the FCE initiative during the period 2017-22.

At the mid-stream stages of our value chain, water represents the most critical resource for sustainability of our operations. Given the growing water crisis in India, we recognize the critical need for us to reduce and recycle the water we use. This is also our opportunity to support the communities by improving access to water. I am encouraged by the results of our water initiatives, which helped us replenish 138% of the water we consumed in operations in 2017.

In the area of resource management, waste collection represents another key priority for us. Coca-Cola’s global vision of “World Without Waste” demonstrates its commitment to address the challenge of waste management in a phased manner. Earlier this year, The Coca-Cola Company globally announced its target to collect and recycle waste equivalent to every bottle or can, which it sells globally by 2030. In India, we set ourselves on a path for accelerated action on this commitment through initiatives aimed at driving awareness and mobilizing collaborative action from the communities. Through these initiatives, we also aspire to contribute towards the Indian Government’s Swachh Bharat mission.

When it comes to our product offerings, we are cognizant of the evolving consumer expectations and the need for more diverse options. Our endeavor has been to shift towards a Total Beverage Company by expanding our product portfolio to include more beverage choices, driven by local preferences and needs. We are also playing our part in reducing the aggregate sugar intake by introducing smaller serve-size options.

Our recent launch of Minute Maid Vitingo is a multi-micronutrient beverage premix containing seven vital micronutrients offering an affordable beverage in the health and nutrition space. Similarly, for enhanced hydration, the recent product Aquarius Glucocharge is a mildly sweetened low calorie beverage, enriched with the triple benefits of glucose, lemon juice and essential minerals. These products balance great taste with nutrition, furthering the National Nutrition strategy towards achieving a ‘Kuposhan Mukt Bharat’.Sustainability for us, extends far beyond organizational boundaries. It entails an ongoing collaborative effort across stakeholders to strive for positive societal, environmental and economic impacts. Through the initiatives shared in this report and an entire gamut of other projects, we will continue to play our proactive and inclusive part in this journey.

What does this mean for us as at Coca-Cola? It helps us build the way we think about sustainability and our broader role in the society. No one solution is possible to address all these challenges in entirety. We are however committed to be a part of the solution in the ecosystem we operate in and find scalable solutions for implementation. It is this spirit of unwavering commitment to sustainability that shapes all our actions across the value chain.

Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Pvt. Ltd. (HCCBPL) is a Company with significant scale, one of the top 10 FMCG outfits and a very large manufacturing set-up. We touch many lives, directly or indirectly and therefore one of the things that we want to ensure is that we are listening to people around us. By listening to the local community, we are able to better align our business interests with the interests of the communities. We can then try to make a difference in areas where the company is most qualified, credible and capable. For instance, last year, we advanced our goals on meeting our energy requirements through clean and renewable sources by 2 years. Our new goal is to meet 40% of our energy requirements through green energy by the end of 2018. Similarly, our interventions in PET Recycling, water replenishment, community welfare etc come from being integrated with the local community. We are happy that communities and civil society are seeing value in what we bring to the table. They appreciate that we have something more valuable than just monetary resources to offer for the good of the public. And that’s our expertise. Our know-how. Our unique and specific strengths.

We are dedicated to our responsibility of preserving water for our future generations. We have already engaged in water replenishment activities throughout our neighbouring localities and are scaling up our efforts to maximize our water saving potential.

Being one of Coca-Cola's oldest franchising bottlers in India, we are proud to be aligned to the company's sustainability goals and vision. We work towards the shared goals through our efforts on water and energy management, as we continue to scale our operations and capacity.

Empowering the farming community and ensuring sustainable growth is a key imperative for our business. We routinely undertake initiatives focused on driving benefits to the local community and fostering water and land stewardship.

DBPL has continually strived to become a more sustainable company. We recently replaced our fleet with new BS IV complaint trucks, switched to battery operated forklifts and solar power enabled zero fossil fuel plant as part of our ongoing sustainability journey.

Being one of Coca-Cola's oldest franchising bottlers in India, we are proud to be aligned to the company's sustainability goals and vision. We work towards the shared goals through our efforts on water and energy management, as we continue to scale our operations and capacity

We at Ludhiana Beverages take utmost responsbility for our role to play in responsible consumption of water and energy, particularly with respect to our local communities. We have undertaken several initiatives for community water management which have resulted in expansive water savings.

We view responsible water consumption and recycling of waste as key responsibilities for us towards our communities and environment. We take considerable investment and efforts for ensuring availability of water through several water replenishment projects and reduction of waste throuch collection of scrap bottles in our localities.

As award winning bottlers for our environmental efforts, we are proud to be driving Coca-Cola's sustainability agenda. We consider environmental sustainability and community awareness to be a top priority and are consistently engaged in programs for local stewardship.

Our approach to sustainability in our business has a hollistic nature. We are engaged in not only environmental responsibility through our efforts for water replenishment, but also community development through education and health related initiatives.

Sustainable growth is a priority for Moon Beverages, which we actively pursure through our operations. Water stewardship is a key focus area for us, and many of our initiatives are centered around strengthening the water security of our communities. We have invested in water rejuvination of ponds and have adopted two villages for creating direct community impact.

Bengal Beverages is taking extra measures for sustainability in its business. Apart from water security, we are also invested in the development of a plastic waste management ecosystem for which we are extensively engaging with government and local organizations.

We endeavour to be a responsible business with a multi-faceted approach to sustainability. We are strongly focused on reducing our environmental footprint and ultimatley driving value for local communities, the lifeline of our business.

Sustainability performance and business success are only going to be more and more interlinked in the future. Thus, we have already acknowledged the importance of and undertaken initiatives for interlinking sustainability with all aspects of our business.

FRUIT CIRCULARECONOMY

India is the 2nd largest horticulture producer in the world exceeding the food grains production for sixth consecutive year. However, farm productivity levels remain low, around 30% post-harvest fresh fruit is wasted and farmers’ incomes need to improve.

Our Fruit Circular Economy initiative has evolved over the last few years to make real, purposeful interventions at each step of the agriculture value chain. The Project Unnati encourages reduced input costs for farmers, higher productivity, local procurement of agro products, increasing export demand for locally produced fruits and driving economic prosperity of the farmer communities while reducing the waste across the value chain.

Fruit Circular Economy is Coca-Cola’s endeavor to make a concerted difference in the Indian fruit ecosystem. We plan to leverage our capability of building demand as well as ensuring surplus availability of Indian fruits, thereby meeting both local and export requirements. With a focus on increasing farm productivity through Innovation and technology, we support the cause of doubling farmer incomes over the years’. The surplus fruit supply shall be processed to create high value fruit juices by integrating farm supply with the consumer needs, thus propelling the fruit economy of India.

UNNATI ORANGE Launched in 2016, Orange Unnati is an outcome of a tripartite partnership between CCIPL, the State Government of Maharashtra, and Jain Irrigation Systems Limited. The integrated agricultural development project aims to augment the quality, productivity and profitability per unit of land used for citrus cultivation.

Orange Unnati encourages the adoption of newer international varieties with almost 50% higher juice content than the traditional mandarin (Nagpur Santra) varieties. To create a holistic impact, the project also emphasizes on knowledge dissemination, easy availability of saplings and demonstrated impact through demo farms.

UNNATI MANGOUnnati Mango was launched in 2011 as a 15-year project to realize the potential of mango farming in Chittoor district across Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. The program benefits farmers through Ultra-High-Density plantations, use of drip irrigation to reduce water stress, increase crop yields and overall community development. International Finance Corporation (IFC) as an integral partner supports the farmers training program, impact assessment and hydrological assessment.

Going forward, we aim to bring in more fruit varieties under our Fruit Circular Economy and Unnati initiatives to enable more efficient and productive farming community.

In January 2018, The Coca-Cola Company globally announced its vision of a ‘World without Waste’. The vision entails a bold commitment to collect and recycle equivalent of every bottle or can that Coca-Cola sells globally by 2030.

In India, an estimated 5.6mn tons of plastic waste is disposed off annually, 43% of which is attributable to packaging. While around 90% of our primary used plastic packaging, Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) is recycled in India*, we are committed to play our part in addressing the broader plastic waste challenge. We are actively expanding the scope of our efforts in India and also contributing to the global vision of a World Without Waste.

Already launched in 5 cities (Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Goa and Bhopal) the programme will cover 6 more cities by the end of this year. We plan to target 50 major cities of the country by 2020.

Along with managing the post consumer waste, we continue to offer our beverages in Returnable Glass Bottles (RGBs) which are completely recovered from the market except for breakages. In 2017, RGBs constituted 31% of our sales.

Within our operations, our system recycled 82.4%, by weight, of all waste generated within bottling plants.

We are committed to creating a circular economy on plastics by closing the loop, connecting every player in the plastic recycling value chain starting from waste collectors to recyclers. We understand the evolving preferences of our consumers and we strive to ensure that we can match their expectations and aspirations. We have added more products in our portfolio in smaller pack sizes to deliver more choices and less sugar options to our consumers. Already a leader in the sparkling drinks, we are continuously growing our offerings in the juices, hydration and dairy segments. This year, we strengthened our Beverage for Life commitment by aligning to the Total Beverage Company vision of building an increasingly diverse portfolio of brands.

BEVERAGES FOR LIFE

This year we continued to develop our product portfolio through addition of products such as Perfect Fruit (non-dairy frozen dessert), Maaza Gold (premium mango drink), Thums Up Charged (first home grown brand with no sugar), smartwater (premium water brand) and Zico (Coconut water with no added sugar). We have made a foray into the dairy sector with VIO, flavoured milk with 25% more protein than a glass of toned milk. We have also expanded our Minute Maid range to include Mosambi, Anar, Litchi and Santra.

We are also committed to contribute towards the National Nutrition strategy of achieving a ‘Kuposhan Mukt Bharat’. Our recent launch of products in health and nutrition space represent some of our recent efforts in this direction.

NUTRITION

Our latest offering Aquarius GLUCOCHARGE has the triple benefits to REPLACE the lost water, to REFRESH through Natural Lemon Juice and flavoring, and RECHARGE with glucose, providing instant energy and priced at INR 10 for a 200 ml serving.

Minute Maid Vitingo provides more than 30% of a child’s (7-9 years of age) recommended daily allowance of Iron in one glass of drink. Vitingo premix is packed in sachets of 18g per pack which on reconstitution with potable water gives 180ml of fortified beverage priced at INR 5.

Minute Maid VitingoA multi-micronutrient beverage premix containing seven vital micronutrients

Our proposed project on building Child Friendly Anganwadi centers in Karnataka aligns with the Indian Government call for action to partner in solving the problem of malnutrition in India and will serve as a pilot which can be subsequently scaled up. The project will also complement the Central Government's Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS) that focuses primarily on children under age 5 to promote their holistic growth and development.

In response to our portion size commitment, we added smaller serving sizes for all our offering packs - we are providing low serve size offerings of our beverages starting from 180 ml.

WATER STEWARDSHIPWater is one of the key ingredients for many of our products and its availability directly affects not just our business but also the lives of the communities where we operate and inevitably also impacts our consumers. Continuously driven to establish a more water sustainable business,we strive to create maximum impact of our efforts and contribute towards the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as well as a more water resilient India.

While our water consumption is a minute part of total water consumed by industries in India, our widespread engagement with rural communities positions us strongly to mobilize resources across the value chain to implement water management solutions. Driven by this holistic view of the value chain our water strategy is underpinned by two priorities: (i) Reduce, Reuse and Replenish(ii) Supporting communities

We aspire to support the global transformation agenda while also contributing to the Government programs such as

‘National Water Mission’ and ‘Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojna (PMKSY)’. Our bottling units regularly carry out ‘Source Vulnerability Assessments’ and develop ‘Source Water Protection Plans’ to mitigate any stress on local water use.

CELEBRATING 10 YEARS OFEstablished in 2008, Anandana, the Coca-Cola India Foundation, is committed to sustainable development and inclusive growth by focusing on issues relating to water, the environment, healthy living and social advance.

Anandana supports sustainable water availability for relatively remote water stressed regions of the country. Through a strong partner network, we work on water replenishment projects with the prime objective of empowering people, especially women, by raising their standards of living.

In 2014, The Coca-Cola Foundation, CCIPL and TERI University came together to set up the Coca-Cola Department of Regional Water Studies, an academic department for building knowledge and capacity in water-related issues. The department nurtures a new globally competitive class of young water management professionals.

Launched in 2011 the initiative aims to improve the condition of government schools in India while spreading awareness on water and sanitation issues especially for the girl child. Having completed its 7 year journey, the project has created far reaching impact through emphasis on basic amenities such as access to toilets and water, creating sports facilities and playgrounds, environmental upkeep and rainwater harvesting. The project also contributes to 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao' by fostering a positive environment for the girl child.

We understand the need to support our value chain partners by providing more meaningful opportunities and ensuring they embrace our values as their own. All our bottling, ingredient and packaging suppliers need to adhere to our strict Supplier Guiding Principles (SGP) but we expand our horizon beyond our immediate suppliers to ensure positive impact in the lives of farmers, street vendors and retailers.

We continuously strive to empower our smallholder sugarcane farmers partners with the agricultural knowledge, water consciousness and technological know-how they need to succeed. Meetha Sona Unnati started in 2016 is our leading initiative in this direction. The project implemented in partnership with DCM Shriram, Solidaridad and International Finance Corporation has been delivering positive results as it enters its third year.
