RISE AGAINST HUNGER When Service IS the SERVICE On Sunday, May 19 th , all three worship services will combine and SERVICE will become the service as we pack meals to eradicate world hunger through the organization Rise Against Hunger. As a ten year old young disciple in the church told me, “this is one of my most favoritist things we do as a church!” As you may know, Rise Against Hunger (RAH) is an international hunger relief organization that distributes food and life-changing aid to the world’s most vulnerable, mobilizing the necessary resources to end hunger by 2030. Why? Because 821 million people across the world do not receive enough nutrition to lead an active and healthy life. Because Jesus says, “when you feed people in my name it is as if you are giving that food to me” (Matthew 25). Last year in 2018, 430,000 volunteers lent their hands to end world hunger through RAH. Thus 794,700 people were impacted by the RAH meals and additional aid. The event and ministry will begin at 9am on May 19 th and then we will share lunch together. This event has a job and role for everyone regardless of age, mobility, and skill set. We will need people to set up, packers, sealers, bag weighers, runners, labelers and event clean-uppers. If you are unsure as to what these roles involve-come and find out! Our aim is to package 25,000 meals during the event. We first as a church engaged with Rise Against Hunger (formerly known as Stop Hunger Now) in 2009 and have since packed 190,000 meals and this year our goal is to cross the 200,000 meal mark! Last year, the 30,000 meals we packed (we signed on for 25,000 but they had a need for packaging an additional 5,000) went to a Haiti missions organization. This is a fun, engaging, and powerful way to live out the resurrection power of Jesus that literally feeds and nourishes people. Thank you also to everyone who practiced a form of fasting throughout the season of Lent and put that money in their mason jar and commended it to God’s purposes on Easter Sunday. Thanks to your giving in the name of Christ the jars raised approximately $1,550.00 to fund the $25,000 meals at .29 cents a meal. We hope to see you ALL there on May the 19th! Oh, and bring a side dish or dessert to share with your church family for lunch. RISE AGAINST HUNGER

When Service IS the SERVICE

On Sunday, May 19th, all three worship services will combine and SERVICE will

become the service as we pack meals to eradicate world hunger through the organization Rise Against Hunger. As a ten year old young disciple in the church told me, “this is one of my most favoritist things we do as a church!”

As you may know, Rise Against Hunger (RAH) is an international hunger relief organization that distributes food and life-changing aid to the world’s most vulnerable, mobilizing the necessary resources to end hunger by 2030.

The event and ministry will begin at 9am on May 19th and then we will share

lunch together.

Feeding and nourishing, because that is what the Church does,

The youth were asked to build a fort during a Sunday School lesson, and Matthew,

Christopher, Ethan, and Jack didn’t hold back!

For one of our Sunday Night Youth events, we learned what it means to work together and learn about each other’s various strengths and talents. Here are some youth living into that by building a spaghetti tower together!

UMFS Plant Sale and Campus Tours

Thank you River Roaders for your UMFS donations of flower pots & saucers and glass terrarium containers. We received a big “THANK YOU!!” from the Horticulture teacher for our two timely deliveries to their campus greenhouse last month.

The students have been busy with transplanting and also creating varieties of dish gardens in preparation for their upcoming annual plant sale in May. The sale will be at the greenhouse on the 3900 West Broad Street campus on Wednesday, May 8th and Thursday, May 9th 8:30AM-3:00PM. Come and meet some of the hard working student gardeners while finding some beautiful plants to take home or perhaps even use for Mother’s Day gifts!

Want to learn more about UMFS? Sign up for the next monthly campus tour with Jill Gaynor ([email protected], 804.254.9463) scheduled for May 21st 5:30-7:00PM. Thanks so much for your support!

Rise Against Hunger is Sunday May 19

We need everybody! RAH is one of our congregation’s most popular mission event when we assemble 25,000 highly nutritious meals for people in this world who are starving. It is also a time of great fellowship because we need everyone's help, young and old. RAH is in place of our three services and starts at 9:00. Come to the Welcome Center for breakfast provided by the Missions Committee, wear casual clothes, and bring a covered side dish for lunch.

Kits for Conference May 19 – June 16

The Virginia Annual Conference meets June 20-22, 2019 in Roanoke VA. Every year, pastors bring UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) kits, assembled by their congregation, that are distributed all over the world to help sustain people when a disaster strikes. We aim to send off Pastor Darcey with as many hygiene and school kits as possible. See our Welcome Center display starting May 19th that will give you all the information you need, including sample kits. This is a great project for individuals, small groups and families! Monetary donations to pay for distribution costs are as important and checks should be made to River Road UMC with the memo “UMCOR Relief”. Turn in kits by Sunday June 16th. For more info, contact Karen Carter at [email protected] or 347-2440.

Micah Initiative

Mary York and our Micah Initiative volunteers are very busy this time of year with Career Day (April 26), Teacher Appreciation Day (May 8th), and 5th Grade Graduation Ceremony (June 13). We are so thankful for all they do to help the students and teachers at Oak Grove-Bellemeade Elementary School. If you are interested in going to the City-Wide Celebration Luncheon on May 9, register at www.micahrva.org or email [email protected] by May 2nd.

WE COLLECT FOOD EVERY SUNDAY FOR GINTER PARK UMC FOOD PANTRY. Thank you for every donation.

We are all excited to bring on the beautiful weather in May! This month our Preschool will be honoring our mothers and all the wonderful females in the children’s lives with a Mother’s Day Tea. This is an annual event that we host in each classroom and invite our mothers (and female figures) to attend that morning. The children have been practicing and preparing for this exciting event! Our last day of Preschool (before Camp Open Arms begins for the summer) is Thursday, May 23rd. On Friday, May 24th we will celebrate our Pre-K graduates and host a family picnic afterwards. Everyone is invited to join in the fun that morning (picnic starts around 10:30am) with games & good food to end the Preschool year and kick off our summer camp!

Our fall Preschool program is filling up quickly, if you have any friends or family that are interested in securing spots we have openings starting in the summer or fall. Please have them contact the Preschool Director, Nora Hamlet, at 754-0027 or visit our website at www.openarmschristianpreschool.org.
