PNAA Celebrates Christmas: Maligayang Pasko!

On Christmas Eve (Bisperas ng Pasko), a few Filipino towns commemorate Joseph and Mary’s search for a place to stay with a reenactment called panunuluyan, a tradition very similar to the Mexican posadas. What every Filipino looks forward to is Noche Buena, the grand family dinner after the midnight mass. Christ-mas morning is the time for visiting relatives. Filipinos wear new if not their best clothes. Children do mano,

which is kissing or bringing to their forehead the hand of an elderly person. This is when they receive their pamasko, certainly aguinaldo from godfathers and godmothers. Christmas lunch and Christmas dinner are with family.

As Christmastime is upon us, we reflect on the birth of the Child Jesus, our Savior. It is also time to reflect at year’s end of where we are as an organization, the PNAA. Are we following that star? Are we in the right direc-tion? We are challenged with membership recruitment difficul-ties as there are no new recruit-ment of nurses from the Philip-pines. The Ways and Means Committee is looking at tapping the student nurses as source of new members; the Human Rights

Committee is dealing with the issue of clinical concur-rency with graduates from the Philippines; the Board of Directors are surveying members for feasibility of in-creases in membership fees, and so on.

President Vicky Navarro has given us her administra-tion’s mantra of strategic, synergistic social action as our road map to fulfilling our mission as an organization. Let us reflect on what we have accomplished in 2012, and usher in 2013 with renewed hope.

The Philippines is known for having the world’s longest Christmas season. The four months that end with the syl-lable – ber are considered Christmas months, which is why stores and households start playing carols on the first day of September! And the holiday season extends beyond December 31st. It doesn’t end until the Feast of the Epiphany or Three Kings (Tatlong Hari) which falls around January 6. If Mexico has piñatas, the Philippines has its parol. It is a Christmas lantern, most commonly in the shape of a five-pointed star. The bam-boo or rattan frame is cov-ered with rice paper, tissue or cellophane. Almost every family either builds or buys one to hang by the window or door. Shopping malls con-struct giant versions of parol. Traditionally, a candle was placed inside for light to shine through; for safety reasons, people now use bulbs or even a flashlight. Families, schools and other places also display a creche or nativity scene called belen. Christmas trees made of plastic are decorated with lights, tinsel and balls. As Christmastime is upon us, Filipinos who are mostly Catholics begin a novena (a series of nine masses) on December 16th. The masses are part of the cherished religious tradition of Simbang Gabi, which literally means “Night Worship.” Filipinos go to church at four o’clock in the morning and afterward have breakfast to-gether. A traditional drink during this season is a warm ginger tea called salabat and a traditional treat is a flat but thick yellow rice cake called bibingka.

What do we want for Christmas this year? Move aside Santa, we will be asking the Child Jesus whose love for us is uncondi-tional, what we want for ourselves, our family and love ones and for PNAA.And I know, that your wishes will be granted. The social purpose, commitment and accountability are in our hearts each day as we bring light to our constituents; as each one of us fulfill the responsibilities we committed to during our induction on the that sunny day in July in San Antonio, Texas. What more can a PNAA President ask for? Not much. The Child Jesus has given me His Christmas blessings every day: they are the elected and appointed officers at the national and chapter levels, They are the committee members they are Advisory Council and most of all they are the members who continue to make PNAA what it is today: strong, healthy, robust and shining brightly each day. PNSC Celebrates Holiday Dinner Aboard By: Mindy Ofiana It was a gray night and the weather outside was frightful but the lights were so delightful as we boarded The Spirit to take us for a 2 ½ dinner cruise for the annual PNASC holi-day party led by our very own president, Mindy Ofiana. As we departed from the Shoreline Village in Long Beach and sailed by the Queen Mary, we were served with sumptuous dinner of green salad, prime rib, chicken, mashed potatoes, and greens, ac-companied by white wine and champagne. Immediately after dinner, we did our gift exchange, where in the spirit of Christmas, we decided to steal each other’s gifts, in a game called Thieving Secret Santa or com-monly known as White Elephant gift ex-change. After few grabbing, we learned fast that one cannot be too attached to the gift that you opened, because it was bound to be stolen from you. In the end, everyone got the gift they so deserved, after all they were all beautiful and meaningful gifts. In attendance, including our president, were Dr. Diovina Jordan with her husband and other family members, Glenda Totten, who also brought with her husband and son, Rolando Santos, Leilani Unite, Linda Absher, Sharon, Fabellar, Emma Cuenca, and yours truly, Maria Sagun. As we sailed through Long Beach Harbor accompanied by dance music in the upper deck of the yacht, we had the chance to spend quality time with each other and mingle with other guests. We danced like no one was watching until our feet hurt illuminated only by the festive lights from the neighboring houses and lighted Christmas trees which served as buoys along the harbor.

But alas, all good things must come to an end. After 2 ½ hours, we were back on shore and a few of us capped the night with desert and coffee from the famous Parker Light House. We continued our tête-à-tête over rich Godiva chocolate cake and Fuji Apple Cobbler. When it was finally time to say goodbye, the rain started pouring oh so slowly and the air felt slightly chilly but the memory of the night kept us warm inside all the way home.

gion and also representing our PNAA President Vicky Navarro) was introduced by our founding President, Charo Jumaoas. Lourdes Nisperos delivered a very inspiring introduction of what we do as a group of professional organization as well as provid-ing encouragement in continuing with the mission and vision of the PNAA. We also have the presence and support of Araceli Antonio of the PNAAF, Fe de Jesus, Cherina Tinio, Lisa Ramirez and the current president of the Northern California Chapter, Joseph Mo-jares. And this is just an example of what we do in the PNAA, we are not only focusing on the professional development part as nurses, but we also integrate something that is fun and stress-relieving activities such as dancing the Gangnam Style led by Fe de Jesus and Joseph Mojares. What a night….. With all the successes of this event, we cannot ignore the people behind it. The person who courageously stepped up to the presi-dency, Lani Noval, who did all what can be done by a chapter leader in a year time. She took over the presidency right after I was elected as one of the Board Members of the PNAA last June of this year. This is what every chapter organization should have, someone from the group who can continue to lead in situations that call for a successor to a vacated position especially the presi-dency. The other person that I would like to give my commenda-tion is Kat Lirio, she did the major part in this event, from securing the place to getting the best food for us. She definitely has the expertise as an event-planner. Also, I would like to mention Beth Brosas for initiating the fundraising for the chapter; she did al-most everything, from the printing of tickets to selling them de-spite of her work schedules. To Roy Lirio for the beautiful back-drop for the PNAGSAC, Charo Jumaoas for coordinating with Ted Ray Llasos in the production of the plaques. Last but not the least, to all of the current and the newly elected officers and all the members of the PNAGSAC. My sincere thanks to all who at-tended the very successful event. …and to Trish dela Paz, our newly inducted chapter president. Congratulations Trish! First and foremost, allow me to congratulate the newly in-ducted members of the Executive Board of the Philippine Nurses Association of Greater Sacramento Area Chapter. It is an overwhelming feeling watching as our newly formed chapter continues to grow here in the Western Re-gion. On this day, December 9, 2012, we witnessed an event that will forever be remembered as one of the most important celebrations in the history of the Philippine Nurses Association of America (PNAA). We survived the rigors of being a fledgling chapter to a two-year-old or-ganization. It was a very challenging task to keep the chapter going and this was done by a group of dedicated nurses and to them: Kudos, we made it to the next level! The induction ceremony was held at the California Auto Museum in the beautiful city of Sacramento. It was at-tended by a small but very enthusiastic group of about sixty people. The Masters of Ceremony, Carold Gantu-angco (President-elect) and Wilna Sobrepena (Vice Presi-dent) opened the occasion with such an invigorating wel-come address. The Star Spangled Banner was sung by An-namarie Espinas and Vangie Anacleto (Corresponding Secretary) did the Pambansang Awit ng Pilipinas. The Philippine Nurses Association of Southern California, Inc. (PNASC, Inc.) has ushered new organizational imperatives and business models that dramatically change how we learn and communicate, where PROFESSIONALISM, INTEGRITY, EXCELLENCE, TRUST, ACCOUNTABIL-ITY and ADVOCACY (PIETA-2) ruled the day! On the morning of October 27, 2012, PNASC members, nursing stu-dents, family, and friends had gathered at the harbor side setting of Hyatt Regency in Long Beach, California. PNASC’s objective for con-

ducting the seminar was simple: “To come along with us on PNASC’s journey to the future! As we introduced our education series, we ad-vocated an intensely personalized, knowledgeable experience to at-tract, develop, and engage members; thus, creating a competitive advantage for the organization.” PNASC’s theme for the educational seminar was “The Dynamics of Strategic Transformation and Innovative Effectiveness.” The theme was an original and refreshing take on traditional strategies and in-novative effectiveness. Every speaker stopped us on our tracks and made us rethink everything we thought we knew about: Walking the talk and reframing reality Real-time strategic changes relative to new graduate programs and advances in clinical nursing leadership Shifting from client dependency to innovative, alternative choices in medications Jump-starting membership and leadership engagement relative to federal, state, and other healthcare initiatives such as IOM, ACA, and others. At the completion of the course, our participants were able to: State the underlying dynamics amongst strategies, innovations, and effective outcomes. Articulate strategic career innovations of a new graduate nurse, clini-cal nurse leader, and advance practice nurse. Effectively engage clients in exploring innovative pain management alternatives. Implement innovative strategies to support leadership challenges and performance measures/metrics. The Keynote Speaker was Joe Avelino, MSHA, BSN, RN, CPHQ, Chief Executive Officer of Los Angeles Metropolitan Medical Center, who spoke on the TWELVE LESSONS OF LEADERSHIP. The other speakers

were Dr. Maria Rosario Gonzales, DPA, RN, Professor at West Coast University. She jumped start the day’s journey by speaking about REFRAMING REALITY: STRATEGIES and IN-NOVATIONS; Roland Santos, MSN, RN, Chief Nursing Officer of Marina Del Rey Hospital, spoke about PERSPECTIVE on the FUTURE of NURSING; Lita Tsai, PhDc, MN, RN, Administrative Manager of Kaiser Permanente, Los Angeles Medical Center, shared INNOVATIVE PAIN ALTERNATIVES: MIXES, CONCOC-TIONS, MODALITIES, and IMAGINOTHERAPY. What provided the reframing of reality and shifted our paradigms were the Panel Speakers: Sharon Fabellar, MSN, RN, CNEP; Sheryll Quinto MSN, RN; Marjorie Heim, MSN, RN, NP; and Reggie Valerio, BSN, RN. Each brought their expertise, experiences, ideals, and best practices that would work in clinical practice. Shun New-bern, MS, CSFP, President and Managing Director of Metropolitan Mortuary Jurupa Valley, personally reached out to our President, Mindy Ofiana, to ask for our support in providing health screenings and wellness education as an enhancement to the grand opening fes-tivities. The event was supported by Mayor Laura Roughton, Council Member Michael Goodland, business associates, family and friends. The call to duty is truly admirable for those Executive Board members (Sheryll Quinto, Community Outreach Chair, Glenda Totten, Board of Director, Mindy Ofiana, President) who braved

overcast, cool, balmy weather to tend to the First Aid tent and offer wellness education for the community of Jurupa Valley. On hand were CDC handouts on breast cancer, dia-betes, eating right, hypertension, obesity, and many more. The attendees' faces literally lit up when approaching our tent full of interesting medical paraphernalia and health edu-cation handouts. You couldn't miss our welcoming PNASC ban-ner. It was exciting to see the launch of a new business and the courage it takes for one person to follow his passion. Their mantra, “A life lived, is a life remembered. Serving the communities of the entire Inland Empire with love and com-passion”. Our organization is pleased to contribute to their mission with community outreach. PNASC's reputation for com-munity service reaches far and wide...as far as Jurupa Val-ley.

Greetings and Aloha from Hawaii! On Saturday, No-vember 17, 2012 at Ala Moana Hotel Hibiscus Ballroom (Honolulu, Hawaii), our current PNAA President-Elect, Dr. Leticia Hermosa joined the PNA Hawaii members to com-memorate the history of PNAA and PNAH and what the organization has become over all the years. Our Induc-tion of Officers will not be complete without Dr. Her-mosa’s presence to mark the start of the new leadership and all the responsibilities that comes along with it. In addition to the installation of new officers, PNAH Foun-dation awarded members who demonstrated excellence in nursing. Our Theme: “Sustaining Community Healthcare with Syn-ergistic Social Actions” resonates as we celebrate the ac-complishments of our officers and members in the pres-ence of our families, friends and the community-at-large. In addition to singing our National Anthem (Star Span-gled Banner, Lupang Hinirang and Hawaii Pono’i), we proudly sang our PNAA Theme Song, “Shine PNAA Shine”. Our past President, Marianela Jacob did an excel-lent job in her continued efforts to elevate the standards of our chapter aligned with our PNAA chapters all

across the United States. Marianela’s contributions to the community locally and internationally makes her a great

role model for the rest of the PNAH members. Our new President, Tina Salvador is prepared to move forward with the new changes in health-care and the new Insti-tute of Medicine (IOM) initiatives. Tina and my-self are participating in the discussion of a new grant, Academic Pro-gression in Nursing (APIN) in collaboration with the Hawaii Action Coalition (HAC), Robert Wood Johnson (RWJ/ARP), American Organi-zation of Nurse Execu-tives (AONE) and Ha-waii State Center For Nursing (HSCFN). Ha-waii is one of the 15 states granted with funding to increase the number of nurses with bachelor’s degree by

2020 (by enhancing nurses’ skills and education and their ability to work collaboratively with other providers to en-sure high-quality, patient-centered care for all.” Together with the PNAH officers and members we will continue to “strengthen our organization and its visibility in the commu-nity” and strive for excellence! By: Madonna Deocares) PNA-OR/WA chapter celebrated year's end by inviting members and supporters to join their Christmas party and KEPF drive. Several tables were prepped for different purposes. Ta-ble runners from generous member, Ate Vi, were given in exchange for monetary gift towards Nazareth Orphan-age. Christmas lanterns were handed in return for mone-tary donation towards PNAA's Kababayan Emergency PreparednessFunding. The chapter received great amount of support and $500.00 was donated to Mindanao flood victims through PNAA. To truly feel the spirit of Christmas, members and guests came in with their festive headgears. Christmas carols and fun games were played and the room was full of enthusi-asm. Danet Lapiz Bluhm, PhD, RN PNASA Board Member 2013-2015 On the evening of December 7, 2010, the Philippine Nurses Association of San Antonio (PNASA) held its annual holi-day celebration at the Marriott Hotel NW, 3233 NW Loop 410, San Antonio, Texas. This was also PNASA’s first ever Excellence Awards ceremony, the induc-tion of its 11th President, and the awarding of PNASA scholarships. The outgoing President, Hedda Gon-zalez, welcomed the members and guests to the event. She expressed her utmost gratitude to her Executive Board for their service especially for making the 33rd PNAA National Convention held in San Antonio a resounding suc-cess. The outgoing 2011-2013 Execu-tive Board consisted of Hedda Gon-zalez (President), Gertrude Umaming (President Elect), Aurora Parocha (Vice President), Fe Kanazeh (Secretary), Ma. Teresa Navalta (Treasurer), Myrna Lorenzana (Auditor), and Board Mem-bers: Marietta Dela Cruz, Judy Evans, Cristina Gatmaitan, Ruth Newland, Floranie Ora, Josephine Schantz, Nel-son Tuazon, and Cecilia Villania. Ms. Gonzalez calls for all members and community supporters to continue make PNASA be the brightest star of South Texas Central Region. Ms. Gonzalez also recognized the ser-vice of non-members who have ren-dered significant contribution to the or-ganization and awarded them Honor-ary Member – Service Award. PNASA supports the education of future nurses and advanced practice nurses through its disbursement of scholarship funds. For 2012, PNASA awarded Anne-marie Serrano, a BSN student at the Uni-versity of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, and Katherine Alford, MSN, RN, CCRN, PCCN. Ms. Alford works for the South Texas Veterans Health Care System and is currently enrolled as a PhD student at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. The new PNASA Executive Board was in-ducted by the 2012-2014 PNAA Re-gional Vice President of PNAA South Central Region, Ms. Pamela Windle, MSN, RN, NE_BC, CPAN, CAPA, FAAN.

The Executive Board for 2013-2015 consists of Gertrude Umaming (President), Nelson Tuazon (President Elect), Elsie Enriquez-Maerina (Vice President), Judith Evans (Treasurer), Ruth Newland (Secretary), Salvie Guillao (Auditor), and Board Members: M. Danet Lapiz-Bluhm, Annaline Dellosa, Joanne Jaceldo, Leslie Joy Maulit, Myra Montenegro, Floranie Ora, Mary Jane Paredes and Josie Schantz.At her presi-dential address, Ms. Umaming ex-pressed plans to continue the PNASA’s twice a year continuing education semi-nar series, increase community outreach programs, and expand the PNASA membership. These projects coincide with the platform of the incumbent PNAA President (Victoria Navaro, RN, MAS, MSN), “PNAA social construct: Em-powering collaborations, sustaining healthy communities with strategic and synergistic social action”. In her address, the PNAA Executive Di-rector, Merlita Velasquez, BSN, RN, lauded PNAA for their success and in-spired everyone for more engaged par-ticipation. PNASA appreciated the pres-ence of other PNAA representatives from Houston especially Luz Reyes (President of PNA Metro Houston, PNAMH), Grace Diaz (PNAA Board Member-SCR), and Nora Peralta (PNAMH Past President). On Thursday, November 8, 2012, two of our very own colleagues and PNAMH officers, Rosnela Hardesty, BSN, RN, CNOR and Charmaine Dizon-Shields, MSN, RN, CVRN II, were honored at the TNA District 9 2012 Outstanding

Nurses Celebration. They were among 20 honorees recog-nized that night. Rosnela is a Nurse Clinician IV at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital with over 27 years experi-ence as a Pe-

rioperative Nurse, serving as staff, educator, mentor and charge nurse. Rosnela serves as a clinical resource and li-aison for quality, education, patient safety and infection control. In 2005, Rosnela was conferred the Outstanding Filipino Nurse award by the PNAMH. She also serves as the organization's Vice-President and Education Committee Chair. Besides her resolute commitment to the PNAMH, Ros-

nela is also a member of the Association of Peri Op-erative Nurses (AORN). Her recent AORN awards include the 2011 Preoperative Nurse of the Year and the 2011 First-prize winner of the Essay Contest "I Care". Rosnela also presented at the University Health Care Consortium on Patient Safety in Chicago. Charmaine is a certified Cardiovascular Nurse and an RN IV at The Methodist Hospital. She is a Clinical Educa-tor, Team Leader and a Clinical Research Nurse. She has led a research study related to Plavix administration in cardiac areas that has led to improved patient outcomes. Charmaine is a Vice-Chair of the PNAMH Education Committee. Charmaine's other awards include recognition at the Houston Chronicle's 2012 Salute to Nurses and was a finalist for the Brown Foundation Award. She has pre-sented locally and nationally on her patient safety initia-tives. Congratulations to you both. We are very proud of your outstanding achievements and contributions to our nursing profession.

PNAMH Fun Walk and Members' Appreciation Picnic A yearly project of the Sunshine Commit-tee of the PNAMH, this year's Fun Walk was held on Saturday, November 10 at Memorial Park. The weather forecast for the day was partly cloudy with a high of 82 degrees and a low of 63 degrees, perfect for the PNAMH members and supporters who participated. AHA Heart Walk 2012 PNAMH-Texas Golden Triangle joined the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk on November 3, 2012 at Lamar University in Beaumont, TX. The annual Golden Tri-angle Heart Walk is a non-competitive, 5K (3 mile) event that promotes walking as a part of a healthy lifestyle and raises funds to support cardiovascular research and education programs for the Golden Triangle community. Many walkers participated in the Heart Walk as a survi-vor and/or to honor a loved one who lost their battle with heart disease. Partnered with Baptist Hospitals of Southeast Texas, PNAMH-TGT set a fundraising goal of $1,000 for the event. With everyone who came out and supported the event, the team was able to raise more than $2,500.00

for the American Heart Association. Imagine the impact this PNA team and Baptist Hospital made to reduce death and disability from cardiovascular diseases. Let us continue to promote physical activity to build healthier lives, free of cardio-vascular diseases and stroke.

and Filipino Christmas songs. The holidays are a great time of year when people are con-cerned with giving back and tend to be more generous with their donations. Christmas caroling is an impor-tant fundraising activity since the donations collected help to raise funds to support the programs and projects of this PNA organi-zation.

PNANEF celebrates Christmas the MERRY way Glitters and lights, decorated tables, Santa Claus hats, adults in fancy red &green clothes, happy smiles and warm hugs - all became favorite scenes during the Philip-

pine Nurses Association of North-east Florida (PNANEF) Christmas party last December 8, 2012 held at the Christ The King gym. Ap-proximately 120 supported this joyous event. Vel Callao, PNANEF President and Daphne Viray, President-elect gave a heart-warming welcome and apprecia-tion to all PNANEF guests. Ed Vi-ray, Chair of Ways & Means en-tertained us with all familiar Christmas tunes from his enormous

sound system. Vickie Ermitano, PNANEF Board member and Julius Matito PNANEF Webmaster took on the hilari-ous games for the kids and adults. Tony Frias, loyal PNANEF member, was “Santa Claus” handing out door prizes and special gifts. Among the highlights were nurses dancing to “Gangnam-style”; Keith, a magician who amazed the children with his wonderful tricks, andthe raf-fle drawing for the iPad that everyone hoped to win. It was indeed a wonderful evening of fun for all, especially the PNANEF children.

PNANEF visits St. Catherine Laboure It has been a tradition for PNANEF to visit a nursing home each year. December is a special month for Hannah Ping-

kian, PNANEF Choir Director, to gather up alladult singersand-wanna-be singers to sing Christ-mas carols at selected nursing homes. This year PNANEF had selected St. Catherine Laboure, a nursing home facility with more than 100 elderly. Half of them made their way to the reception and dining room, longing to hear the most originalPNANEF Christ-mas jingle last December 8, 2012. This time it was different, Hannah decided to bring the kids

along. Christmas carols and laughter filled the St. Cath-erineLabourehallway. The elderly waved their arms, clapped their hands, and nodded their heads, not mind-ingeventhose obviously off-pitched tones. Vel Callao, PNANEF President, PaulineRapadas, Careline& Caroling Committee chair, and Dr. Germina Rio, former PNANEF president led volunteer nurses in handing out at least 80 gifts to residents. Yes, ournurseswere singing their hearts out indeed, but most importantly, our children treasuring this rare moment of Christmas cheer shared joy with those who needed it most.

enormous ballroom was filled with guests from near and far. Most notable were Dr. Leticia Hermosa, President-Elect of PNAA; Dr. Clarita Miraflor, Founding Presi-dent of PNAA; Merlita Velasquez, Executive Director of PNAA; Pamela Windle, Vice President of South Central Region, and Gloria Beriones, Former SCR Vice President, who were present during the induction ceremony. Romy Devera, Board Member of PNAA and current PNANEF Advisor; Daphne Viray, PNANEF President-Elect (2012-2014); Dr. Violeta West, PNANEF Vice-President; Ed Viray , PNANEF Ways & Means Chair; and Lilibeth Tulang-Cuevas, ARNP and PNANEF Asst. PNAGF Celebrates Nursing Excellence 2012

Santos- Medenilla PNAGF President 2012- 2014/ SCR COP Forum Leader The Philippine Nurses Association of Gulf Coast Florida, Inc. celebrated nursing excellence last night, December 7, 2012 at Innisbrook, A Salamander Golf and Spa Resort in Palm Harbor, Florida. The Scholarship and C.A.R.E. Awards Committee awarded 5 deserving nursing students scholarship for $1000 each. The biggest scholarship money given to scholars in history since this PNA Chapter started 13 years ago. PNAGF also recognized 4 exem-plary nurses for Clinical, Education and Community ser-vice. The highlight of the event was when the 5 scholars and 4 C.A.R.E. awardees spoke briefly how this award will impact their nursing career. It was indeed a grand celebration with 240 guests in at-tendance. A brief moment of silence was offered to the victims of the recent calamity in the Philippines, Typhoon Pablo. A video presentation showcasing PNAGF’s activities for 2011- 2012 was shown while the guests were having a delightful dinner. A comment was made by the Banquet Captain that he has not seen a group that loves to dance

such as this Philippine Nurses group. We heard mostly posi-tive comments and praises for a successful eventful evening of PNAGF Celebrating Nursing Excellence 2012.

Northeast Florida Celebrates 4TH Filipino Pride Day By: Daphne A. Viray, PNANEF Pres. Elect 2012-2014

On October 6,2012, PNANEF joined in the celebration of the 4th Filipino Pride Day at Jacksonville Landing sponsored by the We Filipinos Inc. of Jacksonville, Fl. PNANEF is one of six local organizations receiving grant from the proceeds of this event to help fund its various community outreach programs. PNANEF provided the First Aid Booth as well as Health Screening with the help of some nursing students from local nursing universities. To boost fundraising efforts, there was also a food booth selling Filipino ice cream, mango juice and coconut juice. It was a picture perfect weather that day which allowed us to showcase once more our rich Filipino cultural heritage in costumes and native products as well as in songs and dances.

New Jersey League of Nursing held its annual Awards night celebration on November 30, 2012 at Pines Manor, Edison NJ. The event postponed in November 2 due to Hurricane Sandy was at-tended by prominent leaders of healthcare in-stitutions, schools of nurs-ing and private organi-zations. Three PNANJ members were award recipients namely: Roseminda Santee, MA, RN, NEA-BC, CNE, Asso-ciate Dean, Trinitas School of Nursing served as a Major of US Army Nurse Corps, Re-serve in a Combat Sup-port Hospital, Visionary Nurse Educator and Leader. She was among the first to receive Certi-fication in Nursing Education (CNE) and instrumental in having all faculty certified-becoming the First nursing school in the country with 100% faculty CNE creden-tials in 2007. Her dedication and pursuit of excellence played a major role inthe school’s receiving the NLN Center of Ex-cellence in Nursing Education award in

PNANJ-Middesex: It is more blessed to give than to receive By: Myrna Young, MSN, RN, CNOR, | President PNANJ, Middlesex Subchapter Saturday, December 15, 2012 was another busy but fulfill-ing and rewarding day for us, the PNANJ Middlesex Sub-chapter. We were scheduled to accomplish 2 community outreach activities in 2 different towns in New Jersey, Old Bridge and New Brunswick. Glenna Tan, our PRO, sched-uled and coordinated the delivery of our food donation to the Food Bank in Old Bridge. "Rose" Food Bank Coordina-tor, was so excited to see us and could not thank us enough for our donation. Then right after, we went straight to Re-formed Church in New Brunswick to volunteer our services to the Holiday Gift Giving event for the less fortunate kids of New Brunswick sponsored by Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and the New Brunswick Police Depart-ment. When we arrived at the venue, there were already over 500 kids not counting the parents patiently waiting to get in in this cold freezing weather. Teresa Damito, Board of Director, was responsible for coordinating our participa-tion in this event. She also invited some of our member's kids to participate in the program. Some of the kids sang, one kid danced, some helped in distributing gifts, control-ling traffic and some were part of the welcome committee. When we were distributing gifts to the children, our hearts sank when we found out that some of them did not even have a jacket. Envision a child in their thin, fragile body standing outside in the cold weather for at least an hour or two without a jacket. The event went on for almost 5 hours. The time spent doing this filled our hearts with joy. As the president of our chapter, I am so proud of our mem-bers for their generosity, commitment, and selfless atti-tude. I am happy to see that our member's participation in this endeavor is increasing. It used to be that only the offi-cers participated. Now some of our members have joined us. It is such an awesome, awesome feeling to serve and give something back to the people who are less fortunate. Try it, I guarantee you you will like it.

2012 is almost over and for PNANJ Bergen Subchap-ter Executive Board 2012-2014 is just the beginning of more things to come. Our EB is very dedicated to the organization and it shows. On December 9, 2012

our annual Christmas Party was held at Grand Chalet, Wayne New Jersey. The night was well attended by family, friends and subchapter members from, Morris, Essex and Somerset Counties. It was a fun night for everyone. Our EB perform Waka Waka dance and was enjoyed by everybody. We have Chinese Auc-tions, 50-50 and gifts for sale including work uni-forms, Filipiniana dress and jewelry. It was a very successful fundraising event. PNANJ Bergen Subchap-ter EB is a dynamite group. By: Vernie Bacolot, MS, RN-BC PNA-NY President 2012-2014 PNAA, PNA-NY and PNANJ in partnership with UPNEC, & UPAA-NJ sponsored the second night of Panunuluyan sa Konsulado last Friday, December 7, 2012 at the Philippine Center, New York. The PANUNULUYAN replaces the SIMBANG GABI which has been discontinued at the Philippine Center in com-pliance with a Roman Catholic Church sanction against celebrating Eucharist in non-churches or other desig-nated places of worship. The PANUNULUYAN is a 3-part event: a re-enactment of the Holy Family's at-tempts to land any lodging during the mandated Census-taking by order of Caesar Augustus; an Advent medi-tation facilitated by a homilist; and the traditional salu-salo. The 2nd Night of the Panunuluyan was well attended with participants from the five (5) sponsoring organiza-tions and other organizations. The celebration started with praying of the Holy Rosary led by the sponsoring organizations including Majuvy Sulse of PNANJ. The re-enactment of the Holy Family was performed beauti-fully with Deputy Consul General (DCG) Ma. Theresa

Dizon-De-Vega who played the part of Mary, Edmund Pajarillo as Joseph, Lolita Compas as the narrator, and Edmund Mercado, Ramon Mariazeta and Ricky Santos as innkeepers, and Rosemarie Gadioma as the emcee. The celebration continued with the Prayer of the Com-munity led by Vernie Bacolot followed by liturgical reading and reflection by Fr. Legaspi. The celebration ended with the traditional salu-salo at the Philippine Center lobby where everyone enjoyed some of the Filipino dishes like pancit, chicken adobo, vegetable lumpia, banana roll, and puto. The Panunuluyan certainly helps bring out the best of

To PNAA EB, Cabinet, AC and Family, It is with pride and pleasure to give you a snapshot summary in a pie-graph the accomplishments of the “PNAA Office” since its inception last September 2012, four months to date. The office had been used mostly as a repository of important PNAA docu-ments. The staff had been busy filing, organizing and tagging these docu-ments for easy accessibility. In addition, the Office had managed to coordinate the first F2F Strategic Planning among the EB and cabinet members during the successful ERC at Williamsburg, VA last November 9-10, 2012. The office procured personalized metal ID pin for each of the EB members paid for by PNAA while a laminated clip-ID was provided to the cabinet members, courtesy of the PNAA Executive Director. Also, a Duo-diary pocket calendar was given to the EB and cabinet members as a holiday love-gift from President Vicky Navarro and Executive Director Merlita Velasquez. Same gift was mailed to the AC-past PNAA Presidents. So far, there had been few calls received, some from “sales/advertisement” and others are after-office hour calls from PNAA members.

The Membership Campaign and the BODs By: Romy DeVera, Jenny Aying, Bessie Schiroky, Al Espinas, and Grace Diaz-Font Contrary to the usual role of being the Committee Chairs from the past PNAA administrations, the 2012-2014 Board of Directors (BODs) namely; Romeo DeVera, Jenny Aying, Bessie Schiroky, Al Espinas, and Grace Diaz-Font transformed into an entity of a “five-in-one” PNAA force. Vicky Navarro, the incumbent PNAA President, believes that there will be more synergy and strategy from five leaders of various leadership backgrounds if given a common task to exemplify the value of working as one. The Board of Directors has been involved in the membership cam-paign since they took their oath of office. The purpose of the mem-bership campaign is to review and describe the value of the PNAA

as a professional nursing organiza-tion through reori-entation and self-awareness among the active mem-bers. The Board of Directors de-signed a survey

with eleven questions to determine how the members perceive their membership to the PNAA and their membership to the other profes-sional nursing organizations. Comparisons of the benefits and en-gagement of the members of PNAA and the other professional nurs-ing organizations were made and we are looking into the expecta-tions of the members on what more benefits their PNAA membership should offer in the future. The survey questionnaire went through a series of revisions with the able guidance of Marlon Saria, Research and Evidence-Based Committee Chair and with the approval of the PNAA Executive Board. The results and interpretation of the on-going survey questionnaire will run through January, 2013 and are being reviewed on a weekly basis. In addition to the survey, the BODs paid tribute to the thirty three years of PNAA success and highlighted the future of the PNAA by putting together an audiovisual in a PowerPoint format entitled “The Past, The Future, and The Promise”. The audiovisual will complement the survey to focus on the PNAA value as a professional nursing or-ganization. The BODs will reach out to the PNAA members during each regional conference, will do presentation related to the survey, and show the PowerPoint audio-visual tool. The initial presentation of the survey and the PowerPoint took place at the 15th Eastern Regional Convention in Williamsburg, Virginia with Bessie Schiroky, Grace Diaz-Font, Jenny Aying, and Romy DeV-era presenting. Next year, the Board of Directors will travel to the Western Regional Conference in April, 2013 and the South Central Regional Conference in May, 2013 to continue the on-going mem-bership campaign. From: Connel School News Submitted by: Rollie Perea, Chair Ways and Means Committee, PNAA On November 9, Terry Bustos ’13 and Denice Calub ’14 at-tended the Phil-ippine Nurses Association of America (PNAA) 15th Eastern Re-gional Conven-tion in Williams-burg, VA. Bustos and Calub had the opportunity, through the KILN program, to attend the convention, network with nurse leaders, participate in group meetings and presentations, interview members about their professional experiences, and gain advice and experience that will help them throughout their careers. Rolando Perea, Connell School of Nursing Diversity Advi-sory Board member and PNAA cabinet member, said that “because of the students' participation, it has mobi-lized our organization to establish a Nursing Student Com-mittee. I will be working with the Education and Practice Committees and forward a formal proposal to make this happen. I will make sure Terry and Denice will be the first ever members of this new committee. This is a historical moment for PNAA.” Bustos said of her experience, “Attending the15th East-ern Regional conference of the Philippine Nurses Asso-ciation of America (PNAA) in Williamsburg, VA proved to be an excellent learning experience and gateway for my professional career. As a senior nursing student, the “real world” is fast approaching with questions about the NCLEX, graduate school, and choosing a specialty rever-berating in my mind. I could not have thought of a better time to be part of such a convention. Talking to nurse leaders from all over the east coast provided me with a lot of insight about which direction to take. Each nurse I spoke to offered support, advice and excitement that I would be soon joining the nursing workforce. I found the PNAA members from New Jersey to be particularly helpful and accommodating as we discussed employment opportunities around my hometown.” As the official professional organization of Filipino-American Nurses in the United States of America (USA), PNAA will uphold the positive image and welfare of its constituent members; promote professional excellence and contribute to significant outcomes to healthcare and society.

In Memoriam Lucena Torres Laeser April 15, 1955 – December 17, 2012 Lucena Torres Laeser (Lucy) was born on April 15, 1955 and left this world peacefully on December 17, 2012. Lucena was a resident of Tigard, Ore-gon and is survived by her husband Thomas L.

Laeser, and her sister Ceferina Torres Pellejera, brothers in the Philip-pines, Jhym, Nick, Erwin Torres in Virginia. Her father Remigio C. Tor-res (deceased). Fel & Nita C. Sayco, (Uncle and Aunt) in Virginia and Anching Vergara (Aunt), and family in California. “Once diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer in 2011, she spent her last year traveling to visit relatives in the Philippines and attended her cousin’s wedding in Hawaii. Her pain is now in the past, but her love and heart lives on.” In 1978 Lucy graduated from M.V. Gallego Foundation Colleges in the Philippines with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and in 2006 she received her Master of Science in Nursing from University of Phoenix. Lucy worked for more than 36 years as an RN; she worked at Mary-view Medical Center in Portsmouth, Virginia for 17 years, moved to Oregon and worked at Blue Cross Blue Shied as a Senior Underwriter. Lucy later worked in the IV Department at Providence Portland Medi-cal Center and worked there for 11 years until 2011. Lucy was a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, Past President and current Advisor to the Philippine Nurses Association of Oregon and Washington Chapter (PNA-OR/WA), Past Assistant Secretary to the Philippine Nurses Association of America (PNAA). Lucy was a member of the Resurrection Catholic Parish in Tu-alatin, Oregon.
