While the ood that ravaged Southern Al-berta has long been over, Albertans continue to recover. In Drumheller, which was spared much of the devastation seen in oth-er communities, one of the neighbourhoods hit hardest was Lehigh. Some residents of the small neighbourhood are hoping the Town will help protect Lehigh and build berms along the river. What everyone is hoping is maybe the Town will build some dykes to help protect us. Th ere are a few low spots where some dykes and berms could help quite a bit, said long-time resi-dent John Carls. Some residents are frustrated ood mitiga-tion hasnt happened. We havent had any word from the Town whether or not theyre going to build a berm

out here, said Lehigh resident Tyson St. Jean. Its like were the forgot-ten ones. Scott and Penny Head, who moved to Lehigh in October 2012, would like to see a berm as well. A permanent berm would be wonderful. All the other commu-nities have them, so ours should too. Th eres 11 families here and it would sure be nice to know were a little safer, said Penny. Th e Head house was one of, if not the, hardest hit house in Lehigh dur-ing the ood. Th e couple are choosing to rebuild, like most residents of the neighbourhood. We lost part of our house. Th ere was a large addition on the back, but water got underneath it, eroded the dirt, the ad-dition pulled away from the house, and it had to be demolished, said Penny. Were going to start rebuilding next month. Th ey have yet to hear from the province how

much nancial aid, if any, they will receive. We had someone come who took some pictures, and we lled in some more forms, but she didnt really know anything. She gave us a phone number and told us to fax our bills there. Th ey didnt seem to have any answers for us, said Penny. Either way, weve got to rebuild. Peggy Ginger and her husband Ted, were spared direct ooding, but dealt with seepage into their basement. Th eyre also waiting to hear from the provin-cial government, but are committed to ood proo ng their home. If we were to raise our house, ll in our base-ment, drill a well, and put in an addition for our furnace and water treatment, we could be virtually ood safe, said Peggy. We really feel in lim-bo. Do we put money into our houses? What do you do? For St. Jean, two oods

is more than enough. We were here in 05. My wife and I dont want to go through this again, so were thinking of try-ing to sell next year. Its obviously not a 1-in-100 year thing, said St. Jean. My basement was full to the light bulb, water went four feet into the garage, and my well was full. I had seepage for a week and half after. Id pump it out and the next

day, there would be two feet of water back in the basement. Like the Gingers, St. Jean hasnt heard from the province regarding nancial help to rebuild. We waiting. Th eyve gotten our application, but thats about it. We did have the provin-cial adjuster here, but havent heard anything, said St. Jean.

Hi! We are Max and Ruby. We have been together since we were little babies, we are 1 1/2 years old and we have been altered and all our shots are up-to-date. I, Max, the orange tabby, love to play with my sister, we have a lot of fun and we have the best toys to play with. We have only been at the Humane Society for a short time. We like it there as we have a big kennel to play in but we would love to find a new home. Come down and visit us, maybe they will let us out and we could play!

Th ey say the rst step is always the hardest. In the case of a group of teens from Drumheller, the rst pedal was the hardest. Eight teens enrolled in the Duke of Edinburgh program, and one other who is planning to join later, set out on a bike trip from Drumheller to Ban on Th ursday, a little after 10 a.m. Th e teens were excited to get underway on the ad-venture. Im really excited to go on the trip, but Im a little nervous as well. We have some great leaders, who have really helped us out. Its going to be an awe-some trip. I have a lot of friends with me here, so itll be great, said Liam McDougald, who is work-ing through the Duke of Edinburgh program and participating in the trip. Th e trip will take the teens over 300 kilometres, through the prairies, into the foothills, concluding in the mountains. As of to-day (Friday, August 23) the group will be biking from Acme to Airdrie. Were going to be aver-

aging about 45 kilometres per day, totally unsupport-ed. Everything we need, well be carrying on our bikes. Well do our pro-visioning at a couple gro-cery stores along the way, said Colin Rioux, with Two Wheel View, who is facili-tating the trip. We take frequent breaks, we eat as much as we can, we teach how to hydrate properly, and make sure to have a good mix of on and o -bike activity. Th e trip will go towards ful lling the requirements of the Duke of Edinburgh program. Th e biggest one theyll be lling is the Adventur-ous Journey, which will count towards their silver and bronze awards. Th eres also going to be skill devel-opment and physical activ-ity, which are other crite-

ria, said Corporal Kevin Charles, an RCMP liaison with the program. Th ere are half a dozen di erent areas you have to work on to get the awards, so, depending on what they require, a lot of them are pretty close to their next awards. Planning for the trip be-gan in April. Over the sum-mer, the teens fundraised to make the trip a reality. Th e hope is the bike trip will become an annual event. Th is is the rst year for it. We hope to spread the word to other youth. Th e day after they get back, theyre in school, so, hope-fully the word spreads and other kids want to do it next year, said Charles. Two Wheel View, does similar tours for Canadian teens, but generally goes

international. Its a little di erent from what we usually do. Weve taken kids to Argentina and Norway, so we really get them out of their com-fort zone. It helps provide global citizenship, leader-ship, empowerment, and to see the world outside our borders and other cultures. Th e Drumheller to Ban trip is more local and there are such fantastic land-scapes here in Alberta, said Rioux. Th ey return home on Tuesday, August 27, just in time to go back to school. Th is goes into our Duke of Edinburgh program and its great exercise. Well be biking over 40 kilometres per day, said McDougald. Ive never done anything like this, but Im excited to try!

Erik Olsen (back; l-r), Constable Craig Nel-son, Colin Rioux, Raine McDougald, Josh Wolfe, Michael Zabrieski, Maria Patterson (front; l-r), Natalie Westman, Eric West-man, Sam Brown, Devon Ptashnik, Liam

McDougald, and Kerry Maquire set out on Wednesday morning on a 300 kilometre bike ride to Banff. They return home on Tuesday, August 27.

The Drumheller Valley is a unique, scenic valley, cre-ated by millions of years of erosion by wind and water.

About 65 million years ago, dinosaurs roamed the hot tropical swamps and forests that covered this area. Today, the fossilized remains of the dinosaurs can be seen in museums all over the world, and the lush veg-etation exists as coal seams throughout the area.

The Valley was first inhabited by Thomas Greentree, who, in 1902, built his homestead on what is now the Town of Drumheller. The Greentree House became a stop-over place for early pioneers coming into the district.

It was Sam Drumheller who first exploited rich coal

reserves in the area and conceived the idea of a town-site in the Valley. Jesse Gouge opened the first coal mine in 1911. In 1913, the Calgary-Drumheller railway line was opened and the coal industry boomed. More than 40 mines were soon operating in the Valley. Mining towns like Nacmine (short for North American Collieries Mine), Midlandvale, Rosedale, East Coulee, Wayne, and Newcastle developed notorious reputa-tions as highrolling boomtowns with bootlegging and gambling. When gas and oil were discovered in other parts of Alberta, the importance of coal diminished and the economy of the Valley turned to other things.

Today, the Town of Drumheller relies on agriculture, government services, oil and gas, and tourism for its economic prosperity.

For more than a half-dozen years, Martin Neufeld has called Dinosaur RV Park his summer home. His 1957 Mercury Turn-pike Cruiser has also enjoyed the valleys highways over the years. This unique whip was only built for two model years and came with some interesting features for the time, including a push button transmission, Seat-o-matic, automatically adjusting seats and a power rear window. It is powered by a 368 V8 and produced nearly 300 horse-power. The car served as a pace car for the 1957 Indianapolis 500. Neufeld bought the car al-ready restored, but did have the upholstery redone and added a continental kit. He told inSide Drumheller he took it to Rose-bud to golf last week and had no trouble fi tting six sets of clubs the trunk.

    AnswersSudoku Solution Last Week's Crossword

Heres how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the num-bers 1 through 9 must fi ll each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can fi gure out the order in which the num-bers will appear by using the numeric clues already pro-vided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

This year, the category was ribs and wings once again, diffi cult to choose a winner. At least everyone went home with full bellies and happy faces! As usual, there were some interesting and fun names for the dishes, such as Gone with the Wing, Blair Wing Project, and, for a rib dish, - Bone of Contention. The overall winning recipe was in the ribs category, despite some amazing wing fl avors. The winner was appropriately named considering the summer we had. And to top it off , the cook-off began with the biggest storm of the year! The ribs were called, Come Hell or High Water. The champions proved that a good cooking method can outdo a complicated recipe, often calling for an excess of

ingredients! These ribs were fi nished with a basic store-bought sauce! (Noting that a good-quality sauce is also important.)

I was told by the winning family

that they used the following method:

Boil the ribs in water with a bit of maple syrup for about an hour. Slice into 2-rib pieces. Grill on the barbecue,

brushing with a good quality sauce. To serve, slice again into individual ribs.

The sauce on the ribs had a caramelized appearance with a sticky appeal that

makes eating withthe fi ngers all the more

enjoyable. The summer is quickly slipping by, but we have plenty of barbecuing days still ahead of us to try these ribs. Bon Apetit!

Drumheller is going have its moment in the international spotlight on September 6 when the Tour of Alberta rolls through town. Th ough professional cycling is not as high pro le as other sports in Alberta, local cycling en-thusiast Gary Chambers is excited the event will be rolling through the area. I think the town is in for a surprise with the magnitude of the sport. I dont think youll get

the spectator numbers of more established races, but you will get quite a few fans following the race around Alberta, said Chambers. Th e Town of Drumhell-er is preparing for 10,000 visitors during the race. Were preparing for that many people. I think it might be over gener-ous, but those are the numbers from the Tour of Alberta. Th ey say thats what is seen in similar sized communities, said Mayor Terry Yemen. If we get 10,000 folks com-ing to Drumheller, its going to be a happening place, thats for sure. Chambers spoke with inSide Drumheller about the scope of the event, whats in store for the rid-ers, and how it could ben-e t the town. Th ough the race is new, Tour of Alberta o cials have announced a num-ber of high pro le teams competing in the race. Its an UCI (Union Cycliste Internatio-nale) sanctioned event.

Th ere will be big riders and teams, like Garmin Sharpe, who are about as big as it gets. Last year, Ryder Hesjedal won the Giro dItalia, said Cham-bers. Th ere are UCI points in the line, so they will be treating it like a se-rious race. Spectators will have two opportunities to see the riders come through Drumheller. First the rid-ers pass north through town to the Morrin Cor-ner, where they travel west, across the Mor-rin Bridge, and then loop back to Drumheller where they nish at the Badlands Community Fa-cility. Spectators who are new to the sport are in for a surprise according to Chambers. When a pelloton comes through, the group is so tight theyre literally within an inch of each other. Th eyll comfort-ably be doing 50 to 60 ki-lometres per hours, said Chambers. Were go-ing to have a good nish

here. For most of the race itll probably be a tight group with maybe one breakaway group. Th ere will probably be a sprint nish. For the riders, Cham-bers feels the hills, which at rst glance seem daunting, shouldnt pres-ent much of a challenge to the Tour riders. For those riders, theres not going to be anything more than a speed bump. It might sur-prise people, but the hills probably wont be much of a challenge for the rid-ers, said Chambers. Th e biggest boon from the race could be a persis-tent e ect on tourism. When they put cycling on TV, they tend to use a lot of ller content. Th ey talk about the landscape and history of the area. Drumheller has so much to o er, said Chambers. Drumheller will bene t a lot. We have some really great cycling here. Th e road cycling is second to none in the province.
